I have to agree in that based on your half you probably wont make the cutoff finish time. I ran Chicago 2 years ago and my half split was at 2 hours, my full finish was at 5. Heat will slow you down immensely (perhaps why they have a late start) as that is what happened in Chicago. I would recommend doing a full that does not have that aggressive of a finish time- some are 6.5 hours- to ensure you can finish in time,

And this being your first marathon, truthfully, you should have begun training in May for November. There is a HUGE difference between 13.1 and 26.2. Not to say you could not do it but the chances of you completing without injury are at risk. If this year is not feasible, get on the ball for when registration opens late Winter for next year. Marathoners train year round for these races for a reason- its very taxing on your body.

Honestly, based on your half marathon time you will probably have a hard time completing the race in that time limit. The last thing you need going into your first marathon is the stress of trying to finish in a tough cutoff time.

I'm a certified running coach and what I tell runners that are training for their first marathon is to take your half marathon time and double it and add 15-30 minutes. You will most likely have a positive split the second half (after completing 9 marathons I still do). Pacing yourself during a marathon takes practice and experience. For me it's hard for me to start slow and kick it in at the end.

Based on the number of half marathons you have run and the years you have been running you can definitely train and successfully complete a marathon. I would look for a marathon with a 6:00-6:30 cutoff. That way you can enjoy the experience and not stress about a time. The goal of your first marathon should be to finish. Running and completing your first marathon should be a positive experience and stressing about a time limit can turn your marathon into a negative experience.

I agree with Unident. Train for the full, and make your mind up closer to November as to how your training is going.

Perhaps enquire with the organizers as to whether there is a cut-off date as to switching between the half and the full.

If you want to do a full, sign up for the full. Wait till the last day you can to see how your training goes, maybe?

You have four months. Tons of time to train up to full from being half-ready.

I am thinking of trying a full marathon but I have some major concerns. First of all I'm 51 and have been running 1 1/2 years. I have completed 6 half marathons. My runs are between 4,100 to 7,500 elevation and are in the morning. They have been in Colorado and Utah. The full is in Vegas on November 17th and is an afternoon run, 4:30pm. They have a time limit of 5 hours for the full. I don't think I can finish it in 5 hours. My time in my half have been 2.25 hours. Plus I don't know if I can finish it period!! Should I just sign up for half? emoticon
