Lilliputianna: You just made the lightbulb go off in my brain! The craving sugar thing makes so much sense. I've been thinking about my post-gallbladder out diet vs. my diet when I had a gallbladder. I crave so many carbs! I feel a sense of calm when I eat pasta or fried rice or cake or ice cream. This may be a dumb question, but what kinds of sweets aren't made with refined sugar/where can I get them? Also how have you made your body ignore its sugar frenzy (because mine is screaming "COOKIE")? I've been pretty good about the water/unsweet tea/diet beverages, but it's the margaritas and lemon drops that get me haha. Thank you for responding. :)

I know how you feel. I'm also from Louisiana, and the general attitude here is "live to eat," rather than "eat to live." If you really want to take initiative but want to continue eating delicious food, I'd suggest you start making your own foods entirely and skip the Louisiana cuisine (unfortunately, because it's SO DELICIOUS). Too many of the dishes contain heavy cream and butter, and all these added fats can really mess up your gallbladder. I notice you've made a large goal, but perhaps some smaller (more manageable) ones would also help--say lose five pounds first, add 8 glasses of water per day, and exercise four days a week. I'm also a singer, and swimming REALLY helped me with my breathing and to get me more in shape. I'd highly suggest that if you have access to a pool. You're a college senior in New Orleans? I envy you! It's such a beautiful city! If I was in your place, I would spend every spare moment walking around like a wide-eyed tourist, visiting historic places and cemeteries (I love cemeteries).

I had my gallbladder out when I was 28 years old. My doctor couldn't figure out why a 120 pound vegetarian would need her gall bladder out, but I did. (I later learned what caused it, but that's another story). After that surgery, the weight started creeping on. What I learned was, it wasn't so easy for my body to break down fats any more. The gall bladder helps with the breaking down of fats. So, my body started craving sweets, lots of them. My advice is to be very careful with that. Maybe start looking at sweets that aren't made with refined sugar. Avoid sodas at all costs. Since your body can't use fats for energy as well as it used to, it's going to want to rely more on sugar, and store any calories it doesn't need in your fat cells.

My other piece of advice is, walk everywhere you can. Use public transportation if possible. Walk to you classes. Walk to the corner store. Walk around like a tourist. That will force your body to use calories instead of storing them for later.

I'm not in a career where image and social situations are everyday. But social situations like my own anniversary party makes it hard for me to eat better. Although this last weekend I ate a tiny piece of cake and tort, so I didn't follow my own philosophy. It's hard when it's your own mother who bought the cakes and she especially bought the tort so that could have a healthi-er alternative!
I know a trick that usually helps me when I know that a social situation may make it hard for me to say no. There is also nothing wrong with having something once and a while, once every few weeks or something. If a gathering or something comes up, I will usually eat beforehand my own packed meal. It feels a little strange to pull it out and eat it when others are being polite and eating the food provided around them, so if you can find a time and place to eat privately, it will be easier. I know that social situations wasn't really your concern, but in your current position, it is a social situation, and phsychologically speaking, social situations do make it more difficult to stick to your own plan. But if you're serious about losing the weight, it doesn't matter how you may feel about what others think. If you want to make sure you use your time wisely after school, what people think won't matter. After all, it's your life, your health, and nobody can make you feel or do anything! YOU have the power to control your own future!

One big thing to remember. Alcohol is calories in a drink, which is way too easy to consume! So you'll be consuming more calories, faster, and you won't get full. So just don't do it but once a week. Drink water water water, especially on performance nights. You'll feel better too!

I love these
Taco salad- black olives, bell pepper, 1 oz of shredded cheese, beef cooked with taco seasoning (make sure it is LEAN beef, and drain the fat because the taco seasoning will soak into the fat, making it hard to keep it low fat) , shredded romaine lettuce, tomato, low fat stone ground corn tortillas, and it DOESN'T need dressing, it is so good!

Lemon Garlic Spinach is wonderful too. 2 TBSP Olive oil, sliced garlic cloves (2 cloves- if you use a whole 9oz package of spinach). Cooked the sliced garlic in olive oil on high heat until brown/scorched, add 4 lemon slices and 1/4C lemon juice, add 1/4C white wine (alcohol cooks off and the wine is optional), 1-2 minutes later, add washed, slightly wet spinach leaves (wet leaves helps the dish cook well), cook for 2-3, remove before the leaves start to get dark, you want it fresh. Makes about 2 servings.

If I have eaten well throughout the day, and I know that my current calorie intake is enough for the day in the evening, I will drink a hot cup of Good Earth Spicey Sweet tea. It is an all-out cure for my hunger, I love it!

Sorry I'm not really in the same situation as you, but I am on stage once about every 6 months and I hate the feeling of being uncomfortable in my own skin while on display. Losing 12 pounds has made me already feel a lot better about showing off my healthier body physique since I am more in shape. Exercise more often, do weights, your body will look an feel like you've lost more weight just because of the leaner muscle.

I'm a 22 year old college senior in New Orleans. I worry about my future after college. And I live in a food and drink mecca. I have great friends and a great boyfriend and a mega supportive family. However, it isn't so easy for me to give up food that tastes really good but I know sucks for my body. I am a singer. I'm not obsessed with becoming textbook skinny. It just makes me sad that the things I have enjoyed eating so much throughout my life are not okay for me to eat anymore. I had my gallbladder out a couple summers ago, and I started an antidepressant around that same time. Since then, it's gotten gradually harder to keep fitting in my jeans. It's like I blink and gain 10 pounds. I went to the doctor yesterday for something totally unrelated to weight and they weighed me. It was the first time I've actually ever been scared of how much I weighed. And I decided I needed to do something now. I am supposed to be able to lose 45 pounds by July, and I really want to feel motivated and hopeful. But right now, I just feel hungry.
If there are any fellow college gals on here going through similar issues, please feel free to say hey and maybe we can encourage each other! Also if anyone has any healthy recipe tips that are filling and yummy, sharing would be greatly appreciated. :)
