You need to consult the Dietitian/nutritionist for your program.

At our last meeting, my RD said that following a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle is possible after RNY, however it takes a lot of planning and preparing on your part.

You may have to use vegetarian friendly supplements to make sure you are getting your protein, but that is best left for your RD to decide.

I wasn't able to attend the support group after my initial surgery because of the pain in my hip. Once the hip was replacement, I was back at work again and my hours didn't fit with the support group's and I never followed through to see if there were any other groups available. Thanks for reminding me. Now that I'm on disability, I can check out the groups and find one that works.

There are Registered Dietitians who have a specialty in the treatment of patients who have had weight loss surgery. Most centers have a "team" of health professionals--one being a Registered Dietitian. This dietitian not only follows the initial nutritional care; but the "years" of follow-up as well. Most reputable centers also have on-going support groups, etc. to help with answering questions such as this.
Please check back with the physician/center who provided your surgery on follow-up care.

Instead of a nutritionist, I would suggest asking for a referral to a registered dietitian, who has the training needed to help you tackle this problem. Nutritionist isn't a term that means anything, as far as education. I could hang a sign outside of my house tomorrow and call myself a nutritionist. ;) Registered dietitians have to go through a lot of schooling to be certified!

The eating plan the surgeon gives has lots of meat. Meat first then veggies if there's room. Most surgeons don't know nutrition and hire nutritionists who try to treat us as normal. Carbs are bad for us. By following their advice, I didn't lose all the weight I should have initially and was under-nourished more than I should have been. That's why I was hoping others have been in the same situation and found some solutions besides eating just veggies and cheese, beans and cheese, eggs and cheese.

Have you talked to your doctor about what you should/can eat? I would recommend starting there. Gastric bypass generally comes with specific dietary requirements and sessions that educate you how to do that and what it means for your health.

I'm having problems finding foods that fit the gastric bypass needs when I cannot eat meats any longer. Need to eat low carb, still get the protein, feel full, and not graze all day eating unhealthy snacks. Meats upset my tummy. Can only eat shredded chicken and fast food hamburgers and tacos. Anyone else have this problem?
