I lost track of posting my diet tracker for about a month, but you're welcome to check out the last couple days. After lots of virtuous beans and kale, I was shocked to see my fat percentage as high as ever. What the heck?!?

a vegan diet plus lots of exercise might help reduce your cholesterol. if it's genetic though you may need medication.

I went vegan. I know that seems a bit much to you, but my blood work is fantastic. Vegans overall have the lowest cholesterol levels.

Of course folks who eat fish have the best HDL levels...but that doesn't mean their cholesterol is LOW. So, it depends on what your doctor is looking for.

Thanks all. One reason I've been afraid to exercise is that anything involving twisting my torso or compressing it by bending forward aggravates the pain. That knocks out just about all of my favorite activities. But I got creative yesterday and bought a swimsuit! That way I can keep my torso straight and still get a full workout. Better yet, all the fancy new designs are out for the season so it was fun shopping.

I also discovered They have over a thousand recipes, and so far I've made two of them - an eggplant casserole, and a white bean-kale scramble. Both of them delicious. I don't want to go fully vegan, but I think the closer I can get the better off I'll be in terms of the cholesterol.

My next blood test is in two weeks. I doubt I'll be able to get the cholesterol back into a healthy range by then, but I think I can make a respectable dent.

There's a couple articles on cholesterol in the articles database. Just do a site search (box to the right of the SP logo at the top of the page) for cholesterol and you should be able to find them.

In the meantime,keep an eye on the type of fats you're eating. You want to avoid trans fats and keep saturated fats to a minimum. Eat more fish. They have the good omega-3 fats. Make sure you're getting enough fiber. It helps absorb cholesterol in the digestive tract.

Sorry to hear about everything, especially your dog (ours is a family member, especially since we don't have kids) and that's so sad.

I think you can reduce your cholesterol with oats (oatmeal, Cheerios, etc) in addition to cutting back the red meat and increasing your veggies and fruit. Probably wouldn't hurt to drink more water too to help flush things out of your system.

I post this not to ask for medical advice, but more a vent and request for general support...

It's been a crazy time over the past few weeks. I taught a certification course for new people entering my field. During that class, I nearly lost my beloved dog in a scary way after he got into something toxic. I don't know whether it was the stress from those things or if I got into something toxic myself, but I started having mysterious abdominal pains. At first my doctor thought it was gallstones, but an ultrasound came up clean. Then the pain spread and migrated seemingly at random. Ultimately my doctor asked me to go to the ER where they ignored me and sent me home again.

Fortunately the pain has dissipated since then, but I went for about a week and a half where I had to force myself to eat anything at all. I lost 8 pounds in two weeks (so I guess it hasn't all been bad?) I had a followup physical that found me to be otherwise in fantastic shape. Except for my cholesterol, which stands at 256.

So today I finally logged my food intake again for the first time in about a month. I ate lots of veggies and fruits, soo foo, herbal tea, and a sliver of ham and 70% chocolate. Yet I still maxed out my fat intake. Ironically, it's better than I've ever done - usually I leave my maximum fat allowance in the dust before I hit lunch. So I guess that's progress.

With all these pains I've been afraid to exercise too, but I'm creeping back into that slowly. I think that'll help as well. I just really want to avoid the medication if I can, because I'm on a lot of other meds already. You're welcome to look at my tracker if you like ...

But here's my question: other than meds, what's been helpful to other Sparkers in reducing cholesterol? This is all very new territory for me. I always thought my diet was great, so I'm kind of at a loss here.
