If you are curious about GMO foods you can do some sleuthing in the internet to try to find any answers you have. However, it's important to know that not all GMO foods are bad. A lot of them are incredibly beneficial. Corn and lettuce are two prime examples of a food that you want to be GMO. You probably eat more GMO foods than you think. In my opinion, you really only should be concerned about it being GMO if the company supporting the alterations are questionable in their motives. Other than that, when done correctly with no ulterior motives, GMOs are not harmful.

Rick3bears - the first number is what you want to look for - if it begins with an 8, it's genetically modified (although I've yet to see any fresh produce with a number 8 on it), if it begins with a 9 (and in my experience is usually a 5-digit number), it's organic and any other numbers are conventionally grown.
My MP (Member of Parliament) told me the only sure way to avoid GMO's is to eat organic.

No.....just......no. I've not been able to eat soy since, even if it's labeled Non-GMO.

Anarie, I agree with Lilliputianna, that BT corn might have been miraculous at the time, but it's quickly losing effectiveness. Short term gain, long term increasingly-resistant pests. Not unlike what we have seen happen with use (overuse) of antibiotics... the boon doesn't last indefinitely...
That's my concern with GMO. Not that eating GMO produce will necessarily be harmful to my personal health, but, I feel there will be consequences, perhaps very huge ones, from going all-in monocropping with a single strain. If (when) it stops delivering on its pest resistance... what then?

I have stopped eating anything GMO and I have also stopped eating anything processed or containing any form of sugar. I was at 250lbs before, my blood sugar was 135 and my ac1 was at 8 or 9. I was on Metformin 500mg per day, januvia and on and on. My blood sugar today is 110, my ac1 is 6.5 and my weight is 221. I am off of ALL of the pre-diabetes meds and I feel great. My question is... do we have non-GMO/processed sugar/foods in the receipies on Spark People?

I buy organic specifically to avoid GMOs, however be very cautious on that level as well. To apply the USDA organic label, the product must be at least... I think 95% organic? However, that means a small portion can be non-organic, so always check the ingredient list and see if corn, soy, or other foods that are highly likely to be grown from GMO plants are listed as organic or not. If not, then maybe pass it up if you are really working on avoiding GMOs.
I used to eat these protein bars that were organic, but one of the ingredients on the list was a non-organic soy product, which is very likely therefore GMO soy.

Basically, unless it specifically says it contains NO GMO ingredients, assume that it contains them Almost all corn and soy beans are GMO.
Oh, and a pretty high percentage of the time when it says that it is Organically grown, it is probably still contaminated with GMO ingredients.
"but there is a code" The code for GMO is an 8 on the barcode. Organic uses 9 and conventionally grown will use numbers between 1 and 7.
I don't do processed and I don't eat farm raised fish. I saw a picture of a GMO salmon and it was scary.

While GMO foods are not labeled in the US due to the immense power (read: financial contributions to politicians) of the major food companies, they are labeled in many other countries. If you want GMO foods in your community to be labeled as such, write/call your state and federal representatives and complain.
You can assume that organic foods are not GMO. All corn, if not labeled organic, is GMO; that includes corn used as an ingredient in other foods. HFCS, I'm looking at you.

Anarie, you really should read up some more on the GMO corn that's out there. It's bad news. The research (that isn't done in the USA, under the watchful eye of Monsanto) is pretty frightening. While it may have helped people you know avoid a financial crisis, it is not helping the environment, the future of the soil those farmers grow their crops in, or the animals and people who eat those crops.
I would rather eat crops sprayed with pesticides (they can be washed off) than a genetically manipulated crop that has not been properly tested.
I would far prefer to eat GMO corn than conventional. I grew up on a farm, which my dad now sharecrops with a neighbor. The neighbor does the labor, my dad pays the bills, and they split whatever profit or loss there is at the end of the year. The pesticide bill for corn rootworm was bankrupting them, so two years ago they very reluctantly decided to go with the GMO BT corn. This is corn that produces a bacterium in its roots. The bacterium is bacillus thuringiensis, which organic gardeners have used for decades to keep caterpillars from eating plants. It doesn't work on corn rootworm because you can't get it deep enough into the soil. By getting the roots to produce the SAME natural pesticide that you get in almost any organic produce, they thought they would reduce their chemical pesticide bills.
In June of last year, my dad was doing his accounting and realized that his farmer hadn't given him the pesticide bill to pay. He called him up to ask where it was, and the other guy said, "There wasn't one."
They used NO pesticides on that corn crop. Zero. Down from something like 10 pounds per acre the year before. That means no chemical residue on the corn itself and no run-off into streams and rivers.
It's definitely a trade-off. There are some GMO products, like the Round-Up ready seeds, that are politically disgusting; they made these plants sterile enough that poor Third-World farmers can't save the seed, something that anti-starvation organizations spent five decades teaching the farmers to do. But at the same time, they didn't have to make them sterile enough not to contaminate neighboring farmers' crops, and in fact they even sued farmers for selling or keeping seed with the patented genes when the pollen/genes blew over from somebody else's farm! I think that if your farm is next to a farm growing a GMO and it cross-breeds, you should be able to sue Monsanto or whatever seed company it is for criminal trespass and destruction of property. It's the policy that's the problem, though, not the product itself. GMOs are taking billions of tons of chemicals out of the environment. If you want to do something, learn about the laws and lobby for fair agricultural law and policy. Not eating GMOs isn't going to make you any healthier, but fighting for fairness in laws for farmers just might.
They are not specifically labelled, alas, but there is a code... I have to go look that up, and will try to get back here as soon as I know what it is. Most corn and soy is GMO, and now some zucchini and eggplant is as well. Wheat managed to avoid this because the farmers of wheat realized their European customers weren't going to buy this commodity, in time for them to raise a stink. Some tomatoes may be GMO.
If a product says organic, it won't be GMO. (well, unless cross-contamination was not detected.)
No they are not specifically labeled and we have to do our own research. We have all been eating them for a long time though....decades. For instance, did you know that Canola oil is a GMO?. I'm sure not in a bad way, but the rapeseed plant has been altered for this purpose.
And if you buy any processed foods at all, soups, cookies, crackers, jellies, they all could have some form of corn, such as corn syrup, high fructose corn, corn starches. And corn is a real big component of GMO's.
If you understand the farming practice of Co-ops you realize all the corn is dumping into huge silos and gets mixed.
It's a dilemma for sure, what to do! I try to eat as "clean" as I can and cook from scratch using ingredients I chose, but I am sure I am still eating my share of GMO foods.
