Hula hooping! Make sure you have an adult size hoop and if you want to do more than just spin at the waist, watch some youtube videos on how to dance with the hoop and work arms and legs too. It is a lot of fun and you feel really accomplished when you learn a new move! emoticon

Good place to start... dancing. Zumba, Sweatin' to the Oldies, Hoop Dance, belly dance, or just putting on some music and setting a goal to dance through X amount of songs. You set the level of comfort on that last one by varying the speed of the songs or choosing which parts of the music to accent. Don't just pick "dance music"... it can be fun to dance to The Monster Mash and get into character. Whatever keeps us moving right?

I found kettlebell to be fun and effective! I started 3 Weeks ago and I'm already much stronger and my endurance is definitely increaSed.,i like that it incorporates cardio and strength training.

A year and a half ago I couldn't walk up ONE flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. And if I had to carry a basket of laundry or anything with me? I'd need to stop partway up for a few seconds. I had reached the point when I realized that exercise had to become a part of my life, not an "add on" to a diet that I did with a lousy attitude and could never stick with for the long term. I love the water, so I started with aquafit and Zumba aquafit. After a few months of 2-3 times a week of that, I moved up to 3-4 times. And after about 9 months, I went to my first land Zumba class. It was in the basement of my pool and gym facility and after that class I really wondered how on earth I was going to get up those stairs. But I did, and I kept going back because it was FUN! Now, I take Zumba 3 days a week, a toning and weights class once a week and do some kind of cardio (hiking or treadmill and/or elliptical) and I love that I can do it now and not feel like I'm going to die. Start small, find things you enjoy and expect it to take time but it will reap huge benifits in addition to helping with the weight loss. Good luck!

Thank you everyone so much!!! I love these suggestions. Especially rollerblading and hiking, those are so much fun. And I think I'll try Zumba. I don't want to run because it's kind of monotonous and I get shin splints really easily. But the other stuff sounds great!

Have you tried hiking? I know it does involve a lot of walking, but it is really TOTALLY different from walking around the same neighborhood/track/park all the time, and it's truly a full-body workout if you hike the right trails. Since it's more strenuous than walking, I'd recommend looking online for easier trails in your area to get started. I started hiking years ago as a way to add variety to walking, but now hiking is one of my absolute favorite things to do. If you take it slow, you can really do most trails out there, regardless of your fitness level. Just go at your own pace. As an added bonus, hiking burns mega calories because of the uneven, unpredictable (for your body) terrain. And it's a great way to add some nature to your fitness routine.

if you like running, there are programs out there (Couch 2 5 K) that start off by jogging or running 1 minute at a time then walking and doing it in intervals til you build up your time and speed.

Water aerobics is good, the elliptical, stationary bike, if you like moving around in a class atmosphere, Zumba is good. Zumba Gold might be a good start if you like that.

And walking.

I am an exercise dvd junkie! Days after having my 1st child (@ 270 lbs) I started on the biggest loser workout & LOVED it! It lasted about 45 minutes & they gave you low impact alternatives throughout each exercise.. Now they have where you can put together your own workouts to last however long you want & they only cost about $10-15 each. Good luck & congrats on taking a new step forward!! emoticon

I found kettlebell training to be fun. Its cardio and strength training together if you do circuits and you utilize multiple muscles. Its especially great if you are short on time since you burn alot of calories, it can get intense.

If you can run for a minute at a time, you can start running (you know, if you want to go that direction). I was in much worse shape than you 7 weeks ago and now I'm running 25 minutes straight.

Hobbs - under Articles&Videos, SP has workout videos - I really liked the Bollywood one. I can't do all the hopping that they do because I've had several surgeries on my right leg, but it was really fun!

*Rollerblading/Skating is a lot of fun, your hips/butt might have a hard time since it really tones those muscles, but if you take it slow, you should be fine and still up your heart rate.

I second walking. Look up some parks in your town or just some nice neighborhoods with nice scenery. Go and have a nice long walk and enjoy the view. You can change the venue on a regular basis to keep it fresh.

If you like dancing, try Zumba. Lots of fun and our classes always have a wide range of abilities. No one cares if you don't get the steps right away. We all laugh together the whole time we are dancing. Never feels like exercise to me. You can go at your own pace and take breaks as needed.

I find walking boring too, but I love listening to podcasts, so I just download a few episodes onto my phone and walk while listening to a show and time flies.

You may try your local library for videos. I was surprised to find a couple of weeks ago my library has a bunch of fitness videos and I can even request videos from other libraries if they don't have what I want. I recently tried Hot Hula which was fun, but they also have kickboxing videos and other dance-type workout videos.

I recently started taking a beginning yoga class and I LOVE it. But I need to add some cardio to my routine, which I've been putting off because I'm terribly out of shape aerobic-wise. I can't run for more than a minute or so, I can't climb more than three flights of stairs without huffing and puffing, etc. What would be a good cardio activity to start out with (besides walking, which I find really boring)? I really like the idea of martial-arts-type stuff like tai chi, kickboxing, self defense, and other things that involve skill as well as just exercise (like dancing, sports, etc.), because then I'm a lot more interested and a lot more likely to continue. I'm thinking an aqua fit class might be good because it would be low-impact (though that would involve finding a bathing suit and exposing my pale legs to the world - something I haven't done in years!). Any other ideas?
