Knee pain is awful! I am right there with you. You have gotten a lot of good suggestions here. An as a personal testimonial, I lost those stubborn last 10 pounds without doing a single squat or lunge!
The other thing that helped me immensely was physical therapy. See if your doc can refer you.

That's a victory worth remembering. Good luck with adapting to your healing process. I hope you truly enjoy the bike once it arrives.

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. I really needed it today. As you can probably tell by now, I became a whiny, miserable brat earlier today. But after coming home from work and preparing and eating a healthy meal with my family (baked parmesan flounder with mashed potatoes and broccoli in case you were wondering) I sat down and sifted through youtube and found a WONDERFUL walking workout. It still isn't quite as intense as I wish I could do, BUT I at least feel like I really worked out my body.
As I type this the muscles all through my legs are tingling. I made a few awesome choices tonight and feel much better!

A healthy meal, a great workout... and for once in my life I didn't eat my emotions... I worked out and changed my mood!
Thank you again for putting up with my misery and helping me get through it! I love Sparkpeople, people! You all are the best!

You can go for a walk in your neighborhood and vary the time spent walking, speed, and distance. If you have a phone like an iphone, you can get the mapmyrun app and track your walk. Each time you complete a mile, it will talk to you. It will tell you which mile you just completed, your mph, and min/mile.

I know it's hard to be patient, but I'm glad to hear you're doing well with your calorie intake. The scale will start to move, so just hang in there!

The main reason is I don't have a pool available to me to use. I cannot afford a membership at the Y right now and there aren't any other options for swimming nearby. I am getting a recumbent bike sometime this week or next I'm just frustrated that I can't workout like I want to.

I liken it to someone decided that they were ready to quit smoking and then being told by their doctor that although they should quit smoking they can't because of xyz... It's just frustrating. I want the exercise now... not next week... :)

On a side note I am also being very vigilant with my caloric intake. Making healthier choices and striving and making for the most part my daily intake goals on the tracker.

I've had 2 knee surgeries, so I feel your pain. The elliptical is also a good workout machine. Don't give up. My knee gets very stiff if I do. Work on eating right. Walking is also good. Good luck.

Hi Amy

The good news is, the majority of your weight loss progress is going to come from diet and not exercise. So even if you can't exercise like you'd hope, you can still lose weight consistently if you are paying careful attention to what you're eating.

Do you mind sharing why swimming wouldn't be an option? It's a great cardio workout and very easy on your joints.

Thanks! I'll take the air hug! The problem I have with upper body workouts is that my shoulders are also bad as a result of two car accidents so I am limited with what I can do with them as well. I'm doing my best to build them up slowly but it's going to take time and I may never get back the full range of motion. I have to do my pushups on a desk because my shoulders can't even handle the modified ones.

I would walk outside (I am planning on adding that) but right now it's in single digit numbers outside and I don't really have the proper gear for it. As soon as it warms up a little bit I am going to start training for a 5k that I signed up for in May.

Now looking back at everything it even looks to me like it's just a big long string of excuses why I can't workout, but that's not the truth. I want to workout and I am continuing to do so, it just doesn't feel like enough.

Sorry for whining it's entirely possible that I'm also PMSing... lol

I wish I could give you a hug! I can only imagine how disappointed you are. I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions and I hope you'll continue to stay motivated.

Are you able to walk outside? Speed or power walking isn't as hard on the knees but you can still get a good workout, especially if you do it on an incline.

I've watched The Biggest Loser and sometimes the contestants hurt themselves and are limited in their workouts. They still do strength training and focus on their upper body and abs. If you work quickly, that will still provide cardio benefits.

I'm very frustrated with my body right now. I was working out 5-6 days a week doing 30-45 minute vigorous cardio dvds and youtube videos. Jillian Michaels, Kendal Hogan and the like. Then my knee started hurting. I thought maybe I had twisted it or injured it, so I went to my doctor. He told me I have synovitis in both knees and that I could and should still workout but that I cannot do any squatting or lunging anymore. So all those videos and dvds I've been doing... I can't do them anymore.

He recommended I start swimming or purchase a recumbent bike. I have purchased the bike but haven't received it yet, swimming is out of the questions for numerous reasons.

I don't want to stop working out while I wait for the bike to get here, and ideally I would like to keep doing my 30 minute video workout in the morning and just ride the bike at night but all the videos I can find don't work me hard enough. I was training and pushing myself really hard before my knees acted up but walking with Leslie Sansone just isn't the same. I don't get as sweaty or pumped and I don't feel like it's nearly as good a workout.

I just want to cry out of frustration. I'm finally serious about sticking to this and losing weight and now my body is betraying me and throwing obstacles up in my face. ARGH!
