Thanks for all the responses! I feel much better now. I just was getting a little worried because when I do work out and burn a ton of calories I try to eat a little more that day, and trying to figure out how much more I should be eating. In the past when I have tried dieting I wasn't always eating more to compensate for what I was doing in the gym that day. And then I would start to plateau and get frustrated. Thanks for the suggestions!

Here's a Spark article about that:

And here's what they DON'T tell you about their magnetic machine entries (exercycle and elliptical) that are hugely inflated:

Both SP and those machines are just giving you an estimate. Personally I wouldn't put too much faith in either being really accurate. Like another said if you want a more precise idea of what you're burning you need a high quality heart rate monitor.

I've always ignored the gym machines and used SP tracker just because it was easier than trying to manually enter everything. When working out, I focus more on the minutes I put into a workout and gave it my all the whole time, so I knew I was getting my time in. I've lost quite a bit of weight this way, so it worked for me, but every person is different.

I suggest a heart rate monitor. It is just another estimate, but I think it's a little more accurate than machines and SP's fitness tracker. If that isn't an option, go with the smaller of the two numbers so that you're not overestimating calories burned.

When you are working out in the gym, are you finding that the machines are telling you a different number of calories burned than when you log them into your fitness tracker? I feel like Sparkpeople is telling me that I am burning a LOT more calories than the gym machines are telling me. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if I was burning that many calories, but I'm just not sure if I really am or not. Which one should I go by?? Any help is appreciated :)
