I found the only thing that was consistently working for me was early morning exercises. When I first started at 305 pounds I actually liked walking in the dark because no one could see me. :)

Now after losing a lot of weight, I still am an early exerciser! The motivation for me comes from having a personal mantra that says "Never Go Back."

CLUELESSINKOREA has great suggestions.

Like you I don't deal well with setbacks/obstacles/changes so I get up at 4:30 every day to work out. Yes, it is early but once you get into a routine its not so bad.

Start small. Tell yourself that you are going to walk for 20 mins every morning for one week. After that week you can commit to another week, add more exercise, or make changes to accommodate whatever you have learned over the past week.

I'm also the same in that I don't do well when my schedule changes at the last minute! This is one reason I actually "schedule" gym time. If I know that I have to go the gym Mon, Weds, Fri (with Sat being an alternate day if I miss one), then I can say when those last minute things come up "going out to dinner sounds fun, but it's gym night - we can either get together after I've done that, or I'm free on Thurs." And no matter how crazy my Monday is, I'm scheduled to workout, just like I'm scheduled to go to work.

Re: where to start - it doesn't have to be all or nothing, or this ideal routine. Just start! What do you want to do? Walk? Swim? Take a group class? If you're worried about budget, check out fitness videos on youtube. You can see if equipment is required (often it isn't!) and you can see if that video is something you actually want to do. Just find something you want to do, and you can build your routine from there.

It took me awhile, but I've found something I LIKE doing for exercise. I used to always love going for walks, even as a teenager, as they give me time to think and just be by myself. Then I moved on to running and I REALLY love that. I mean, I look forward to going for a run and I'm kind of bummed on days I don't get to go..

But kind of like going to a job, not everyone finds something they love to do.

Cluelessinkorea had some great suggestions.

I just wanted to add that exercise can be a great stress reducer and mood lifter. I know it's hard to get out and work out, but once you do, you'll probably find that you're happier and have more energy.

Hiya Sarah,

I hear you about schedules, if someone messes with my schedule I am a basket case. Being in Korea has actually seriously helped me in this area, they do EVERYTHING the last minute, so I am learning to go with the flow.

Anyway. Motivation is a toughie.

You mentioned not having a lot of money to exercise, it's all good, you don't need money! If you have a house and a pair of shoes, and a computer and/or smart phone, you are good!

I was stuck for a long time thinking "I have to go outside of the house for exercise to count". It's not true, the spark strength videos that use pilates and what not are great, and no equipment other than your body is needed. For cardio, walking is natures best fitness tool. Just go outside and walk.

As for not having time, when I get home from work, the last thing I want is to get all sweaty and gross after dealing with evil children all day....okay, so they usually aren't that bad...but I understand how getting home you are exhausted and can't imagine working out.

Have you tried doing it in the morning? I put my exercise time before work, right after waking up and reading my Bible, off I go to work on pushups to my favorite music. It works really well for me, maybe it will for you.

I am trying to figure out how to get exercise into my daily routing consistently without being all this is not for me. The biggest thing is motivation, I see some reason why I am not, I just don't know what to do without getting way in over my head trying to deal with everything.

The biggest problems or issues I see with motivation or no exercise are:
-I am not always sure where to start and getting everything together into a routine and what I need isn't my greatest strength. Having a shoestring budget for anything with multiple items makes me go for the basics and not overload or buy anything that I cant substitute or wont use.
-Losing my dad and ongoing depression for years is another thing. I am happy for the most part, still sad and definitely have an off day or 2 in a week in terms of just not giving a dam about anything. I just do what's needed, if that. Side effects from meds and adjusting them can be wicked too for me.
-Just getting myself into a daily routine. My schedule isn't crazy, its just finding time after a crazy day when I really don't want to do a lot. If things come up and I cant do a full anything, it drags me down. I know life is not the same always, I still beat myself up if surprises come that aren't my fault.

This may not seem serious to seem people, to me it is. If I get off schedule or have surprises thrown into my day or week, I am not the greatest. Its just me. Trying to figure out my motivation, and find a routine, plus motivation and get together what I need seems huge and I have no idea where to begin.
