I eat Fiber One bars all the time. They gave me problems at first when I wasn't used to all the fiber. It says on the box to make sure to increase your fiber grams slowly. I do switch between Kellogs FiberPlus bars, fiber one bars, and South Beach has new fiber bars that are extremly good! I only eat fiber bars now instead of any other granola bars.

I had been buying boxes of these and eating them once in a while as a treat - they taste great and are SERIOUSLY addictive. It's really hard to eat just one. It took me a long time to figure out the link between this bar and the major gas it causes. I tried cutting out soy flour and even tried quitting milk and cheese for a while, but finally linked it back to whatever is in these bars. Believe me, I eat a ton of fiber (i heart oat bran), so it's not just the fiber. Plus, the first ingredient in the chocolate chip oat flavor is chicory root - i think the other flavors also have chicory root as a main ingredient, but chicory root is an appetite stimulant! I had no idea! No wonder they are so addictive! So, the compulsion to eat two+ at a time only compounds the whole gas problem. I just bought a box a week ago and I'm going to have to leave them in the office or give them to a homeless person or something, because there is no way I'm subjecting myself to this magical fart-bar ever again. :P

Wow, I'm surprised at how many people have a problem with these things! emoticon I've been eating them for over a year now and never had a problem. I wonder why??

7/24/09 9:00 P

I had the same problem, gas and bloating. They were my go to breakfast bar for about a month but I could no longer take it anymore!

I went through a phase where I ate a lot of fiber one and south beach bars and I was a smelly monster! I kept thinking it was just because my body was adjusting to getting more fiber, but it was not. I've given them up since then because I decided it wasn't worth smelling up the house

The one thing I've noticed, after reading a lot of nutrition statements and packages, many of these bars contain sugar alcohol which can cause digestion issues, including gas and bloating. I searched until I found one that had less sugar, more protein and no HFCS.

I love them and i haven't had any side effect so far i have been eating one a day for the past week!!

I like these granola bars! Good for breakfast with an activia yogurt and a piece of fruit. I used to get a little gassy but generally not too bad... as long as I don't have a second in a day!

My primary reason for not eating these is that they're way too sweet, but yes, there are also too many artificial ingredients, particularly HFCS.

Too much sugar, i stopped eating them a month ago...

What a blessing it is to have searched "Fiber One" within SparkPeople! It thought it was me with the gas, as well. I will try other, more nutritious bars. Thanks for the good information. emoticon

Yes they do, they make me gassy! I switched to Atkins advantage bars, delicious

Its the Chicory Root. Some people's bodies can't handle it like others. And notice how its one of the first ingredient in the list... means there's a lot of it!!

Google Chicory Root - it talks about its benefits, but also how its used as a laxative.

7/24/09 2:13 A

Wow, I just bought a couple boxes of these for snacks. Maybe I should stock up on Gas-X too! emoticon

Read the label please. Is this what you want to put in you body? The fiber is not the problem ,the carbohydrates and sugars are. Eleven grams of sugar per bar. What is your quota for sugars per day?

I love these bars!!! Had the gas to begin with, then started taking a "generic" gas-x pill afterward. I work in a call center and can't afford to live in the restroom because of gas. Don't have as many problems now as I think my system has gotten used to them.

I love these bars - my favorite is the Oats and Caramel (they taste like Oatmeal Scotchies one of my favorite cookies, minus the guilt!). I haven't experienced any gas or bloating, but I eat a pretty high fiber diet because I have IBS. If you don't eat enough fiber regularly than your body can definitely experience some changes as you try to integrate it into your system. But it definitely helps with weight-loss and regularity!

The chocolate are my favorite! But they do give me gas. I had a friend try them and she said the same thing. Good for a sweet healthy snack every now and then.

I just tried one yesterday, the chocolate and oat fiber one bars, but I didn't have any problems/side effects at all. I guess I'm another lucky one. My boss eats them without problems, but her family complains about gas, and will ONLY eat them on the weekends.
I know having flatulance can be an embarrassing episode, but it's completely natural. Don't let gas get in the way of your life. Fiber is WAY more important.

There is definitely some un-healthy stuff in the Fiber 1 bars (see below). The GNU bars are much healthier, have more fiber, and none of the side effects IMHO, but are a little harder to find (I used google and found them at the Vitamin Shoppes near here).

Ingredients of Fiber 1 bars (from their web site):
Chicory Root Extract, Chocolate Chips With Confectioners Shellac (Chocolate Chips [Sugar, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter, Dextrose, Milk Fat, Soy Lecithin], Ethanol, Shellac, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Rolled Oats, Crisp Rice (Rice Flour, Sugar, Malt, Salt), Barley Flakes, High Maltose Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sugar Canola Oil, Honey, Glycerin, Maltodextrin, Palm Kernel Oil, Tricalcium Phosphate, Soy Lecithin, Salt, Nonfat Milk, Peanut Oil, Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Natural Flavor, Baking Soda, Color Added, Almond Flour, Peanut Flour, Sunflower Meal, Wheat Flour, Mixed Tocopherols Added to Maintain Freshness.

I'm in there with most of you. I eat the Fiberone bars for a treat. They taste so sweet it's like a treat for me...almost as if I'm cheating myself. Yes, gas is a major issue when I eat them. Majorly, but that's always my issue when I eat lots of fiber. I have learned that I have to live with it if I want to have my daily fiber intake.

OMG!!! I bought some on vacation a few weekends ago, to take with me in the car. They taste great, but I farted all the way to Florida, during the entire weekend and all the way back! My husband was not pleased. I can't buy these again. I came back from the trip and told my co-workers about them. I am steering clear, although they did clear me out. But, imagine having that problem at work! No way!!!

BTW, I drink 12-13 cups of water a day, so that did not prevent the gas.

I have been having one or two Fibre One bars for breakfast for weeks now with no problems. I guess I am lucky. I just bought some Kashi almond bars to try so I'll see if they bother me.

I've never had the problem. Fiber one & the Caribian(?) bars are the only ones I eat now, but then when I eat them it is in the morning with my 1-2 cups of coffee. The new strawberry fiber one bar is awsume, it is now my favorite out of them all.

Yikes, this string is kind of interesting that so many people had the same reaction I did with the Fiber 1 bars. I finally also ate half at a time. But what is going on with the Fiber One bars when other bars with the same fiber don't cause that problem? Something is not right.

PEGHARP Posts: 252
7/22/08 8:26 P

I completely disagree. I can eat several other types of bars, with more fiber than Fiber 1 bars have, with no problems whatsoever. But those Fiber 1 bars made me so uncomfortable I tossed the last one, like I said earlier. I'll look at the ingredients next time I see them in the store--they have to have something else in them besides fiber. Too many other people have the exact same reaction I do, and it's NOT due to the fiber content alone.

When i first started caring about fiber i went crazy on it and I had the same problem. Its because your body isn't used to getting that much. Bacteria in your intestines eat the fiber and than produce gas, that what causes us to bloat. If you try to eat too much fiber, the bacteria go crazy like a starving man would on a vegas buffet. so i would watch what other fiber sources you are eating and try to keep it between 24 and 30 grams a day.

7/22/08 4:03 P

I have the same problem but for me, I think it's because of the fiber in them. I've started monitoring my fiber intake in the nutrition tracker and the days when I eat the Fiber One cereal AND have a Fiber One bar, that's when it's worse. Also, depending what else I eat that day, it sometimes takes me over my recommended allowance of fiber for the day. It's fine on the days I'm not in my fiber range though.

Wow. I eat them a few times a week and have never had any trouble. I had no idea they could have this side effect. I do drink a lot of water, though, almost always 12 or more glasses a day.

PEGHARP Posts: 252

I hate 'em. Don't know what they put in them, but there are several other bars out there that have MORE fiber and NONE of the side effects. I bought 2 boxes of Fiber One bars and finally tossed the last bar--I couldn't put myself through the discomfort again! So not worth it!!!

There are other ways to get just as much fiber without the gas, so why bother?

ANNMARION12 Posts: 445

I usually drink a bottle of water or two glasses of water while I'm eating a bar, seems to help me. When you're taking in that much fiber at once, make sure you're getting a lot of water that day or else you'll have some 'trouble'. :P

I agree with increasing your water. I don't have a problem with the Fiber One bars as long as I've had plenty of fluids. Gas-X is also my best friend. You learn these things as you get older.

emoticon i have 4 boxes of them. I get gas too but you will when there is fiber involved.

7/21/08 8:11 P

Try upping your water by an extra glass or 2 on those days you eat a Fiber One bar. I found that when I ate the Fiber One cereal, if I didn't drink between 10-12 glasses of water (some before, during, and after eating the cup of it) I was so painfully cramped over and bloated.

But if you're needing a good cleanse, you can't beat it!

I love the chocolate Fiber One bars, but I have the exact same problem! I love this site!! I couldn't believe it when I saw this topic!

A fellow teacher casually mentioned how good they were one day, and a few others agreed, so I got some. OMG!! I wondered if it was just me, and didn't feel comfortable asking my co-workers.

Are the Luna or Kashi as tasty as the Fiber One?

Just a note, but Fiber One bars have Shellac in them. I just read that at another message board.

OMG those things are awful! They taste great but my family almost had to move out! My DD kept yelling "Run for your life!!" My dogs didn't even want to sleep in the bed with me anymore! It was kind of hilarious but also embarrassing. I recommend Luna Bars instead.

If you're constipated you might try magnesium. I was constipated my entire life, trying anything and everything. Then someone suggested a magnesium supplement and it really helped a lot - without the embarrassing side effects! LOL!

Oh yeah, I had this problem BIG TIME. Do a Google search on "Fiber One bar" and "gas" and see all the hits that come up!

I ate them for several weeks (I loved the chocolate, too!) but the problem only got worse and worse. Once I figured out it was the Fiber One bars causing it, I switched over to Kashi and Luna bars instead. Much cleaner, and without the maltodextrin that causes all the intestinal distress!

You're not the only one. I try to split the bar up in two and spread it out throughout the day. I find eating it on an empty stomach will cause the gas and bloating, even at half a bar.

I can't say whether it'll go away or not as I don't eat them on a regular basis...just when I know I need to get some more fiber in me.

I recently tried the Fiber One Bars and the chocolate one is awesome!! But man did I experience some serious bloating and gas!!!
Has anyone else had this experience and will it eventually go away after a while??
