the stairs at work have a few short flights (less than the normal 12 steps) when I am on them I always change direction and go up or down one more time on the short sections. Does not add much more time on the stairs but it does add steps for the pedometer.

Quick power walks with the pups, going toward a hill so I get a bit of incline on the way back. Sometimes up and down it.

I like to walk around the house while I'm talking on the phone. It keeps me moving, but also helps me pay attention to the conversation rather than being distracted by other multitasking activities. It's a bit like taking a walk with that friend. emoticon emoticon

I stand on my feet all day. For a time I am in a room all by myself standing at a table. So, while I am standing there working, I simulate walking on the spot. The door is usually closed because of the loud machine noise in the room next door, so I get in a few extra 'steps'. Every little bit helps.

Like so many others listed below, I find myself TAKING those extra trips up or down the stairs to put something away in the linen closet (up) or storage shelves (down). I find myself smiling at myself for simply making that 'extra effort' without complaining.

Park at the far end of any parking lot, and take the stairs instead of the lift in any bldg. It adds up.

"pull my navel to my spine" whenever I think about it; a great Pilates technique to engage core muscles. I noticed how helpful engaging my core is during physical therapy so if I do it long enough, I just might get that flat stomach. emoticon

Mostly I work from home, and the bathroom is upstairs so....every time I need to use the bathroom, up and down I go, steep stairs. Puts a smile on my face everytime.

I like to fidget.

Mostly I just can't keep still when I'm sitting for a long period of time, but you'd be surprised at how much more you burn if you constantly are changing position.

When I'm cooking I put on the radio and dance as i'm cooking. It boosts my energy and is a fun way to burn some extra calories!!! emoticon

When sitting at the computer (like now!) I sit up straight with ears over the shoulders over the hips. This forces the back into a normal position and uses back muscles. I didn't used to be able to do it for one minute, but my back is stronger and I can do it much longer.

While waiting in line at grocery store, drugstore, post office, etc., I do calf raises. At the end of the errands, my calves can be burning!

When driving, I do cheek (butt/glutes) squeezes. Do that for an hour and you can get sore!

Anytime when sitting, standing, waiting (even at church or in a theatre), I pull my shoulder blades together. This forces the shoulders to go back and helps keep your back strong and you in good posture.

There are hundreds of ways to do little exercises all day long. Keep looking for more ideas! Be creative with it!

Walking to see colleagues, or to the school library, rather than emailing a request. I am also a fan of the wall pushup. I have a big empty wall in my bedroom and I do 20 or so whenever I pass it. Not as strenuous as a regular pushup, but since I've started it, I can see more definition in my arms.

Every once in a while I will stop what I'm doing and do some exercises ( legs, arms, abs.) And sometimes just do some stretching. emoticon

I can't sit while on the phone, so mostly I have it either on speaker or wear a headset and pace (the assistants joke that there's a visible groove around my desk). Being in Europe, walking to and from things is also a lot more common, especially where I currently live, so for lunch, I normally walk close to two miles (altogether).

My favorite "extra" is the little tai chi training session one of my colleagues has recently started in some of our pre-dinner break. It's not so tiring that I would sweat (and thereby ruin my professional look), but it's a centering (and demanding, if done right) exercise that gives me that little extra boost of staying power to last through dinner (and later) meetings.

I walk my dog with several short bursts of jogging thrown in..He loves it, and will often start jogging when I'm walking! I also turn music up very loud while I vacuum...and try to move very quickly through the house.... emoticon

When I have several things to take up stairs to put away in bedrooms or the bathroom, I take them one at a time.

That way, I'm up and down stairs 4 or 5 times instead of just once.

I always have to pace when I'm on the phone. It's just awkward staying still or sitting down. I never think of it as exercise or anything; it's what I naturally want to do on the phone... Weird.

I take the stairs instead of the elevator on my way back from a class that's on the fourth floor. Come to think of it, it would probably be even better if I took the stairs up, too ^_^;; In general, though, I get quite a bit of exercise walking around campus, taking my dog out for walks, and walking when I go shopping (extra movement is easy when you don't have a car!)

every time my very grumpy 3 year old starts to drive me bananas, we have a dance party - just turn on some music and shake our booties for a few songs... it gets the heart beating and makes it impossible for either of us to stay grumpy!

I stand up to walk around or stretch after every 30 minutes of sitting down. I do not sit for more than 30 minutes at a time except when am in bed.

I'm a live-in nanny, and the kids live about a mile away from their school. On nice days, we'll walk back and forth instead of driving. I love getting the extra activity in, and the kids have grown to love it too!

I work in a touristy town in the summertime and parking is a pain in the butt, so instead of circling the block looking for a spot close to the building, I park about a quarter to a third of a mile away and walk. My coworkers think I'm weird, haha.
