Your doctor shouldn't tell you just to stretch more without taking a look at you to see what might be happening. If it does come down to the need to stretch more, then it would be best to keep up with it, so you don't continue to experience the pain and tightness.

You won't know until you ask. So ... ask to make sure there is nothing serious going on. And if you are advised to do some stretching or other exercises, then do them diligently. Don't just say "I suck at stretching" and then expect to see any improvement.

I totally agree with everyone else here. (1) See doctor and maybe PT (2) Don't go from sedentary to running. Running is VERY hard on the body and not something a beginner should be doing -- especially if you are having some problems. Find some other forms of exercise you CAN do ... become more physically fit and lose a little weight .... and then ease into running if that is something you think you would enjoy.

So... doctor and take it slow. Both good pieces of advice.

I'm not sure how I would talk to my doctor about it. I've had back soreness pain for years (I'm almost 33... I have had tightness in my back since I was 25ish). When it started I did see a doctor because it was so tight I couldn't stand. They basically told me it was tightness, and the PT guy agreed.

So when I feel back pain now I assume it is because I suck at stretching. But even stretching before, during, and after I still get tightness. I will say that jogging on a track the other day seemed to make it slightly less of a problem.. but still something I had to stop multiple times for.

Won't a doctor just tell me I need to stretch more?

I second (or third) the suggestion that you consult a doctor.

And I third (or fourth) the suggestion that you start with walking. If it seems like it's not enough, get a backpack and a soft 10 lb weight. You can burn a lot of calories that way.

Totally agree with the suggestion of building up a solid walking base for a couple of months, before transitioning to running via a Couch to 5K plan.

Are you just starting to get into exercising? I would suggest walking for a while. Get an inexpensive bicycle and do that for a while. Work up to more vigorous things slowly. I can bicycle very hard for hours in Florida July heat, but running? Never been able to do it for some reason, no matter how good of shape I'm in.

jumping from total inactivity to running, especially if you are overweight or obese, is a really bad idea. Build up a base of walking for several months and do strength training before starting to run.

That's not something you should just power through. There could be any number of things going on and it would be best to check in with your doctor about it to make sure you aren't causing further damage. Running is a high impact exercise and is hard on the body in general. Even though it's your back that is hurting, there could be an underlying issue somewhere else that is causing your back to compensate the way it is and giving you pain there. So talking with your doctor and possibly being referred to a physical therapist is likely to be your best bet with what you are describing.

Additionally, are you wearing properly fitted shoes for running? That can make a big difference for your body.

Today was Week 1, Day 1... but I've noticed this problem before. Every time I run or jog my back (particularly lower back, tending a little bit towards the right side) feels like it is being put in a vice grip.

Is this something people should power through? It feels no amount of stretching before or during is really alleviating it.

Today was particularly bad because, while I play basketball, I haven't done anything active at all in 4 months. I would love to hear that if I just keep at it eventually the pain will stop coming as quick and badly as it does now.

Anyone else have this problem?

Bonus: It feels like road jogging is probably the worst activity that has ever been invented.
