With cardio you strengthen your heart, which consequently in addition to burning fat also supplies oxygen to the muscles making them strong. A few cardio exercises that work the best in this regard are:
• Running for 20 minutes is good for starters and you can prolong once used to it
• Riding a bike is an easier alternate to running
• Shadow boxing is another excellent exercise to help you achieve your objective
• Dancing is the fun way of burning calories

WALKING is a fantastic way to get started. All you need is a decent pair of shoes and somewhere to walk. If it's too cold outside, find somewhere indoors. Check with your local mall, community center or senior center.....many have special hours/areas just for walkers. The great thing about walking is that you can control the distance, speed and intensity yourself just by changing your pace, going longer, or adding in intervals of some sort.

If you really find walking boring, grab a friend to go along, or find some books or music to listen to while you're walking--the time will fly by. As time goes on and you begin to see results, you may find yourself getting more interested in the process and actually enjoying it. If you want to try a video, Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds series might be just what you're looking for.

You mentioned that you've recently gone vegan. I've never done so, but from everything I've read it sounds like vegans must be intentional in order to get in the necessary protein and other nutrients each day. Are you tracking here on spark (or elsewhere); if so, are you meeting your ranges on most days? Undereating can cause exhaustion and low energy.

I know it seems counterintuitive, but if you exercise you'll probably start to have more energy. Start off with 15 or 20 minutes three times a week and go from there. You can do it!!

Thanks for your terrific success story, onlineaslou. You give me good encouragement. I am retiring in a year and a half and I keep thinking I will exercise then! Must try to do it now!

Hi, JMARJEAN. That's the way I considered exercise when I started a few years ago at the age of 52. I had been diagnosed with Type II diabetes along with my high blood pressure. I really needed to lose weight for my health and knew I had to exercise even though I hated it.

If I didn't want to die prematurely, I needed to eat lighter, reduce my carbohydrate intake, and start exercising regularly. I considered in the same category as taking my meds and testing my blood sugars every day.

That was 6 years ago. Since then, I have lost 50 pounds and become more healthy and physically fit than I have been in decades. I take fewer medications and my Type II diabetes diagnosis has been downgraded to "insulin resistence." I still don't LIKE exercise, but I don't mind it as much as I used to because I have seen and felt the benefits for myself. I do it even though I don't always want to do. I don't have to like it: I just have to do it.

I am not a morning person and I can't imagine ever getting up earlier to exercise. So I do DVD's after work. Yes, I am tired after work and I don't always want to do them -- but I do them anyway immediately after coming home. They help me transition from work to home and wind down after a stressful day. I force myself to start -- and always feel better when I finish.

You are not alone. Not everyone who exercises like it. Good luck to you.

Thank you so much for the options, Archimedes. I don't usually sound so negative, but this has been my lifelong struggle-to find some kind of exercise I can get interested in. I think I just need to stop whining, bite the bullet and do something, knowing that it is as important as taking my meds for cancer!

There are lots of simple things you can do to make your day more active without exercising. You could take the stairs instead of the escalator. If you drive to work, park at the far end of the lot and walk the extra way. If you take a bus or subway, get off one or two stops before and walk the extra way. If you take an elevator, get off one or two floors before and walk up the stairs. This may not seem like a lot, but they are ways to get in some activity during the day.

If you don't like walking in the cold, then how about walking at your mall ? Lots of people get up early and walk laps inside their local malls.

Do you like to dance ? dancing is wonderful cardiovascular exercise you can do at home with DVDs. When the weather is nice, there is also golf, tennis, gardening, etc... As zorbie said, exercise should be something fun. because when you enjoy doing something, you look forward to doing that something each and every day.

If you like to dance, why not check out Zumba Gold ? That's a form of Zumba (Latin Dance workout) that was designed for older people and those who wanted a less intense dance workout.

I am a 68 yr. old, breast cancer survivor who has a BMI of 30 and must start exercising. I recently have been eating vegan, with a weekly egg or two. I am not athletic and dislike exercising of any kind. I do work full time still. What can I ease into or jump into, whichever is needed? I hate going to a gym or walking in cold Ohio weather. I am too exhausted to exercise after work and must get up at 5:30 every morning. I am wondering about morning video workout DVD. Yes. Or not the best idea?
