if you have a gym membership, or if you can get a trial membership, set a goal & use the home eqpt purchase as a reward.

for example, I wanted a TV/DVD combo for our exercise room at home. I had to use the exercise room for at least 30 minutes, 5 times a week, for one month. Then I allowed myself to purchase the TV.

that does two things - it gets you in the habit of exercising, and you'll get to try out the gym equipment on a consistent basis before you buy.

plus, by the time Feb rolls around, you can probably find some 'like new, barely used' home exercise equipment for sale.

we have an elliptical (DH wanted it), a Bow Flex, some free weights, and several exercise DVDs. I do Pilates at home, use the elliptical and Bow Flex some, and go to the gym. Our Bow Flex is the style that has a rower option. I think that's my favorite home cardio activity.

I had a recumbent bike that I liked a lot, but I traded it for an elliptical. Big mistake, the elliptical I bought wasn't a smooth ride and every time I used it it would walk itself across my floors, even when I put a pad underneath it.

I would suggest trying cardio/dancing videos and buying small hand weights and a yoga mat for in the home. The dancing videos are really fun.

Most of the at-home machines are not that sturdy and don't last. If you go to fast, they almost fall over. I would just do the videos on sparkpeople.

I use my body weight...push ups, sit ups, etc. Also jump rope and Hula hoop..Pretty simple and inexpensive!

Check on freecycle first in your area, then craigslist. I was able to find a treadmill for 25.00. When I went to pick it up, it was huge. It folds up though. When we folded up the ramp to get ready to move it I noticed the price sticker on it from Dick's Sporting Goods...1399.99. O.M.G. I love it (as much as one can love a treadmill) and I have used it a few dozen times since getting it a few months ago.

I also have a medicine ball, resistance bands, 2lb dumbells, and I have some accessories for my Wii, with several fitness games, and my Zumba DVDs. I like to have a variety of items to pick from so I won't get bored, and hopefully I can make it through something before one kid or another comes to interrupt me!

I have a jump rope, exercise ball, PowerBlocks (weight 5-50lbs), a few kettlebells, a homemade TRX suspension system, a few power bands and just arrived yesterday... a Body Press pull up bar.

I hardly ever do any intense cardio in the winter. I use HIIT to get fit. Some fast paced weight training mixed with some jumping lunges, jump rope, burpees and box jumps is an amazing work out.

Do you have any weights at home? They'll transform you.

Yes! It is cold right now and I don't have any cold weather workout clothes! Next year I'm planning for that!

If you have limited space, I'd forgo the cardio equipment and walk or run outside. Get some free weights for inside. If you do decided to get cardio equipment, I have an elliptical. I don't use it often (running is my go to), but when the weather is bad and I don't want to go to the gym, when my joints are hurting and I need some cross training, and when I was later in my pregnancy it's great having around.

I own a treadmill that has the ability to fold and be placed in the closet.

Thank you! I've actually favored the elliptical more than treadmills at the gym.
Maybe I can find one on Craigslist!?

I'm not sure where I'll put it, but I think having it in the apartment will be very convenient.

Consider storage before you purchase exercise equipment. Where is it going to go when you are not using it? Will it be convenient to get out of that space?

Consider your motivation. Statistics show that most people don't use the exercise equipment and it goes to the yard sales. They are among the most common items to find used! Be sure you'll use it before buying it. Then look for one second-hand to save money.

Ellipticals are great, but there is a lot to be said for treadmills also. Do your homework and research. Best to try out eqiupment at hotels and fitness club before springing the buck to pay for one yourself. Find out what suits you best.

Talk to people who travel a lot such as airline pilots and flight attendants, or business travelers if you know any. These folks use the equipment at hotels and have a lot of knowledge about them.

Good luck!

A rowing machine doesn't take up much room and can be stood up afterwards to take less

The one that I have is larger so I can't help on that. Just be sure you you get the right stride

I was looking into buying an elliptical for my apartment. Something small if possible, as I don't have a lot of room in my apartment.

Need your suggestions! emoticon
