After quitting I had it the worst 4 months after and it got better from there...
When I quit I replaced it with running and eating better.
Running helps you breathe better!

I quit too about 10 years ago! I would visit the Dr. just to be safe!

Congrats for quitting!

I quit 10 years ago but when I first quit I noticed the stayed for around 3 Ifmonths -- it is your lungs expelling the crap ie. muscus etc. I would suggest going to the doctor for a chest xray just to err on the safe side

Hi Katie

You've gotten some great advice already. I just wanted to second the idea that going to your doctor just to be safe is probably your best bet.

Congrats and good for you - I quit so many years ago I don't even remember when that was. I am 58 now, smoked between 2 and 3 packs per day & quit cold turkey when I did quit. I started smoking very young (like 13) so by the time I reached my 20's my lungs had had it! You will cough a lot and for quite some time. You filled your lungs for so long that now it needs to clear out & that is why you are coughing. It will get better - try throat lozenges too that really helps with the tickle. But like others suggested, see the dr. if you feel it's going on too long because constant coughing is not good for you.

Keep up the great work & keep us posted how it's going - you go girl!!! emoticon

Congratulations and good for you !!!

I quit on Valentine's day in 1986 after 3+ packs a day for years. I remember for a while after quitting I had an awful "smoker's cough" but like Firecom said, it was my lungs recovering. Not unusual at all. However, if you're coughing to the point where you think you might throw up and it doesn't seem to be getting any better at all, it probably would be a good idea to call your doctor, just to be on the extra safe side. Best wishes to you !! emoticon

I cough a lot too, all of what you are experiencing I to experience the same. I do, end up throwing up this happens at night mostly. I figure with time it will go away.

My mother smoked for years and she quit in 2000 and she still is coughing at times.

I guess it just takes time for our bodies and our lungs to get that stuff out. We don't really realize what we have done until we decide to correct it... I am very proud of you for quitting emoticon

I smoked 5 packs a day until I quit on Jan 1 '63. I coughed for a long time afterwards as well. Consider how long it took to get those lungs in such terrible shape, and believe me, the lungs if you could see them would be virtually black instead of rosy pink.

It will take time as your body is working to clear all the crap from those lungs. Just hang in there and consider every cough as a victory yell.

I quit smoking on 12/27/12 :)
My question though is WHY am i coughing like a smoker still? It's been almost 60 days since my last cigarette and I feel like my cough is more frequent now than it was before. I smoked for 10 years. A lot of the times i smoked menthols. Now i get this irritating tickle in my throat and i have to cough it out (which seems impossible) or drink tons of water. Sometimes it gets so bad i almost throw up.
I know i should probably just go to the Dr, but i was wondering if any ex-smokers have had this problem?
