Somatotyping has been largely dismissed.

"Sheldon's theories enjoyed a vogue as the "pop-psych flavor of the month" through the 1950s.[2] Modern scientists, however, generally (with occasional exceptions,[3][4] some relying on outdated – 1978 or prior – studies) dismiss his claims as outdated, if not outright quackery.[5]"

In one of my psych courses, we looked at how body type (may) relate to personality, and it was actually pretty interesting how well they coincided with everybody in the class. We then looked at the ayurvedic body types (pretty much the same thing but determined by another culture) and those had indications for what to eat/avoid to achieve "balance."

I think it's interesting and offers a new perspective and you can always incorporate it. But it's not something I find to be sound enough science to devote my whole attention to it, especially because even in both of the body type suggestions they talk about how you can be a mix of the body types! Which to me basically means 'we found this slight correlation between people that look similar, but it's not enough to really be significant.'

Heed caution. Utilize it if you want to, but as DRAGONCHILDE said, for everybody, weight loss occurs with a reduced calorie diet of healthful foods and exercise. Just how much you need is determined by a LOT more than just your body type... it's determined by all of your genetics AND life experiences. So tweak things to find what works for you.

I'm with Deb on this one. Body types can tell you what kind of clothes look best on you, where your fat will come off, but it's not going to change HOW you need to lose the weight. We all do the best on this, basically:

A reduced calorie diet of whole foods, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein, with a healthy amount of healthy fats and complex carbs to support our activities, while exercising regularly for heart health and calorie burn.

There are a million ways to get there, but the one thing that doesn't matter is your body type. There is little solid, reliable evidence outside of weightlifting sites that supports these theories that it's really making things unnecessarily complicated.

If you eat at a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. Where you lose is determined by genetics... not what you eat nor how you work out.

There is no most effective method of fat loss dependent on your body type.

However, when you create your calorie deficit, your body type may have a role in where your fat is lost from on your body.

You cannot, however, lose more fat than another ectomorph by following an ectomorph-specific plan.

Calorie deficit is calorie deficit - no matter to whom.

Does anyone put any stock in the business of choosing your "body type" to determine the most effective method of fat loss? Endomorphs having a naturally curvy hourglass figure, mesomorphs being naturally athletic/muscular and ectomorphs who are naturally tall and slender (no curves, small chested).

I seem to have characteristics of all three of these types.
