Hi. I think I've got the answer for you. When I broke my foot a few years ago, I found a paraplegic work-out site. Very cool! The trainer was air boxing from her chair. Basically, just throwing punches fo 1/2 hour at a good rate using her whole upper-body strength. I tried this during the time I was waiting for my foot to heal, and it worked great! Came home after 2 weeks of Maui holidays 2 pounds lighter! Maybe not as much as I'd have liked, but I lost instead of gaining!

There are a lot of exercises out there you can do without using your legs. I've been trying to get my mother-in-law to do some. She even bought some very lightweight hand weights. But she has yet to find her own inner motivation to really get started. She has very bad knees so can only exercise while sitting down.

I know that Jillian Michaels advocates squatting (static, so you don't move once you are there) and then doing punches. I have done it in a few of her workouts, and it does help your heart rate blast up there.

Other than that, I agree with everyone else. Chair exercises. Google is a good friend with that stuff!

You could do chair aerobics. If you go to YOUTUBE and search on chair aerobic workouts, you'll find a number of different upper body cardiovascular routines you can do while sitting in a chair. Some of the workouts can be quite vigorous.

You can also do upper body strength exercises while sitting in a chair. Do you have hand weights or resistance bands ? If so, work your upper body muscles while your foot heals.

In general, as long as you are mindful of what you eat, you will not gain weight because you can't exercise as vigorously as you'd like. When it comes to weight loss or even weight gain, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. exercise is what keeps our bodies fit.

So, as long as you're eating right and watching your portions, you'll be fine while your foot heals.

I'm sure this is a repeat question somewhere on the board, but I couldn't fine it. I sprained my foot last Thursday but don't want to lose out on keeping healthy while it heals. Are there any aerobic/cardio workouts I can use to keep in shape while I'm on the mend? Are there any videos on Sparkpeople for such things? Thanks!
