I try to pick something healthy and at least in my maintenance calories on this day,

I very rarely eat out. When I get the urge for something fast food like taco bell or Mickey D's, I go online and check their nutritional information. That usually changes my mind about fast food. But every now and then the hubby and I like to go out to a nice restaurant. I always check to see if our chosen restaurant has a website and a menu. I check out the menu and decide what I would like to eat. Some restaurants post the NI information and some don't but I usually go for a fish or chicken dish, with any sauces on the side and no added salt. Normally the meal that is served to me is enough for two people so I divide it in half on my plate, eat one half and take the other half home for leftovers.
Yes, portion control is difficult when you go out to eat but your choice is to either plan ahead and eat less during the days before you go out or just learn to practice portion control.

I usually eat out about 1-3 times a week.
I've discovered that ordering from the starters/appetizers menu is probably the closest thing to a real single portion than any of the mains! The other day I went to a restaurant with friends, and realized that everything in the mains section was loaded with cream, cheese, deep-fried or had very little nutritional value! Then I looked over at the starters and found the perfect thing: tandoori chicken skewers! Grilled chicken marinated in tandoori sauce. How perfect! It came with a light yogurt-based sauce as well. So delicious.
So my tip would be to check out the starters. Sometimes ordering 1 or 2 healthy starters is way more satisfying than a so called entree!
-order the lightest thing on the menu - a salad without dressing or heaving toppings, grilled fish, steamed veg, etc. -order what I feel like eating but only eat a small portion of it

We eat out at least once a week, usually 2. I stay on program - my stock order is grilled chicken caesar salad, no cheese, no croutons with the dressing on the side. Sometimes I have shrimp or salmon on my salad and occasionally I will order grilled fish or steak with steamed vegetables (it's usually broccoli). It rally is simple, especially if you know ahead of time what you plan to order and order first. Then you aren't influenced by others' orders. I always look up a restaurant on line to see what they have and make my choices before we go when at all possible. Otherwise I revert to my stock order.

Maybe once a week, maybe less? That includes ordering in. If it's a chain restaurant, I get nutritional info off their website and choose a meal that fits in my ranges. If it isn't a chain, I at least try to look up the menu online ahead of time and make an educated guess at nutritional info (based on similar-seeming meals from other restaurants or the components of the dish). I can almost always find something that's under 600-700 calories and that isn't too hard to fit into my day as long as I'm careful with my other meals that day. Depending on the meal and the restaurant, I might also eat only half and take the other half home--and given the sizes of portions and most restaurants, I still have plenty to eat!

We eat out less often than we used to, but still at least once a week. I always assume that eating in a restaurant is at least 1K calories. I tend to eat my salad or order it as my entree, but skip the dressing. I use those calories for a glass of wine and, really, I don't much like restaurant dressings anyway. I also eat only half my meal and either share it with my husband or take half home.
I eat out waaaaay too often! Maybe 5, 6 times a week. There was a time that I ate out 20 times a week (that's not a typo). full time job and full time student meant i didn't have much time, but my life is a lot more relaxed now and I'm enjoying cooking!

We eat out about once a week. I stay away from cream sauces, dressing is ordered on the side, don't order fried food, usually only eat half my meal (portions are always huge) and I also tend to simply like things that really aren't that unhealthy. For instance I love seafood so I will order the grilled salmon or halibut with a side of vegetables (and will have a few bites of mashed potatoes). And sushi (some sushi can be horrible, fried or with cream cheese and creamy sauce, but I like the simple salmon and rice type of thing with lots of wasabi). Every once in a while like maybe once every two months I will get something super greasy and terrible like a bacon n blue cheese burger with a side of my favorite french fries or a full bbq meal at the local bbq place. An occasional treat like that isn't going to derail me though.
We were eating out 4 or 5 times a week not too long ago, which we've drastically cut down to 1 due to finances and the fact that it just wasn't that healthy! At home I can control exactly what goes in to the food, eating out can have so many hidden calories.
For the (now few) times we go out, I'll decide what I'm ordering earlier in the day by looking up the menu online (if that's possible). I'll then enter that in to my tracker before anything else, along with what I plan to drink. For the rest of the day I'll plan my food accordingly, and once I get to the restaurant I'm less likely to be tempted to order the 2500 calorie cheeseburger or to partake in the fried potato skins that someone else ordered for the table.
