Forgive me but I doubt that statement. India rubber resistance bands were first used in the mid 19th Century when they were developed for use for rehabilitation. This was actually the first commercial use of India rubber. In the late 19th Century springs were substituted for the bands and all the strongmen of that era used them, There developed competition using the springs which at the time was called strand pulling.

The development of the current generation of rubber resistance bands began back in the 1980s, guys got tired of catching chest hair in the springs. I have strand pulling books showing workouts which date back the the 1920's and 1930's.

Not trying to be harsh or corrective just noting that the use of bands is recycling of traditional forms of training such as the current interest in using Indian clubs and kettlebells.

I used to use a band when they first came out and loved it for it's portability. I noticed the 3 band type in a sportinggoods store the other day and will probably get it. The nice thing about it is one can get two handles and 3, 20 lb bands which allows them to have 20,40,60 in one setup. If one can only have one thing, I think bands are great. But dumbbells have their advantages also. The ones with quickchange discs seem to be getting cheaper from what I have seen.

I'm pretty sure I'll get bands. And since they have a replacement for life policy, I'll buy the bodylastics one, I'll keep you post on how I like it.

As a first purchase, I do like resistance bands - cheap, portable and extremely versatile.

The big advantage of weights is that you can compare the amount of resistance between sessions - this is harder to do with resistance bands. In my mind, it's not worth purchasing light weights - common household objects (eg. a milk jug full of water) are good and free substitutes. Only when you get into the 10 lb ish range does the size and gripability of a purpose built weight really become worthwhile. Personally, I prefer adjustable weight sets that can grow with you - these are more expensive than a single fixed weight, but cheaper than buying a set of different fixed weights.

I think it depends on how long term you are going to use them. I have wore out 3 sets of resistance bands. I used them so much that they broke. Now I have 25 lbs set. We shall see how long they last. I would go with dumb bells. I got a box of dumb bells at walmart for around 25 bucks. I like them because you can change the weights to go up when you need to. Good luck in this.

Walmart Canada lists two sets on their website but not the ones I am familiar with so you will have to check locally.

For a starter set of resistance bands I recommend the Golds Gym three band with set from Walmart. It costs about $15 and comes with a DVD. For a more demanding resistance band set up check those from . The Lifeline ones are also avaialable at Sports Authority.

Thanks, I am now pretty confident about buying resistance bands. I'll probably get a Bodylastics kits, since they seems to be of great quality. But since it is my reward for 20 pounds, I'll have to wait a little :)

If you have to choose one, definitely go with the resistance bands. They are much more versatile, and when you need more of a challenge you can choose a band with higher resistance. They are convenient for travel, take up little room for storage, and are also cheaper than a set of dumbbells.

I like dumbells, but even on a smaller budget you cant get both, and you can use both to get more variety!

Why not buy yourself both ? Resistance bands are an inexpensive way to strength train at home or on the road. You can find them at any Walmart, Target, Sears or even TJ Maxx for under $10. You could probably get a set of three for around $15. Hand weights are fairly inexpensive. they start getting really pricey for the higher weights above 20 pounds.

My rule of thumb for picking hand weights, get your bag. The one you carry with all your stuff, not your purse. Weigh that bag. How heavy is that bag ? I did a survey and found that many women carry bags that routinely weigh 8-10 pounds. So, if you lug around a big heavy bag, you can handle 8-10 pound hand weights.

Using those little girlie weights will not give you dainty muscles. If you want to see some definition, don't be afraid to lift a heavy weight. You will NOT get bulky if you lift something heavy. that is a misconception. Women don't bulk up picking up heavy weights.

If you're new to using resistance bands, I highly recommend you join SERGEANTMAJORs resistance band team. he's got a ton of basic and advanced workouts using bands posted.

depends on what your goals are. if you are toning and at home the resiatnce bands are great and there are different levels of the bands. for the dumbells u would have to buy different weights and they dont store that well. I have had many friends use the bands and get great results

I want to buy myself something to help me with my strenght training. It will be my «20 pounds off reward» (Still 8 pounds to get there but I see it coming soon!!)

I was wondering what should I choose between dumbbells and resistance bands? What I you using, and why do you prefer one method over the other? What are the pros and cons of each?
