I don't like following the 8 servings rule for water. It sends me to the bathroom entirely too many times. I know it sounds lazy but I work in customer service and can't leave my station a lot. I also cut water off at 7pm. Nothing like waking up at 4am on the dot to use the bathroom. I find this number to be good on a day I work out hard.

I've been drinking 70-90 oz of water daily (pretty evenly spaced out) and I only have to go four or so times a day, and have never had an issue with having to get up at night, even when drinking well into the evening. I've also been doing this for years though so Id guess your body adjusts eventually.

I agree with Unident.
I was drinking too much, and was cold all the time, and was continually running to the bathroom - even all night.
I've cut back, and realized that other beverages and liquids do include water

I think your body adjusts. However I was in class this weekend and miserable. I was on some medicine that dehydrated me so I was guzzling water, and the teacher wasn't big on breaks. Our classes go from 9 am on Saturday until 4 pm with a 30 minute lunch break. I was praying for a break. :)

My body never seemed to adjust even though other fitness friends said it would. I'm still in the bathroom constantly with about 72oz of water daily.
The good news about that is that the bathroom is far away here at my work, so I get my extra steps in.

Drinks containing caffeine (coffee, tea etc) have a diuretic effect IF consumed in large quantities. People only pay attention to the first part of that statement and totally overlook the second part. A cup or two of green tea is not going to suddenly start flushing out a lot of water.
All the fluids we drink count toward our "8 cups a day". Water, coffee, tea, juice, milk, even soda-- although it is recommended that we limit some of them. Juice has a lot of calories and not as much fiber as a piece of fruit. Too much caffeine is not good-- it can cause headaches and jitteryness, trouble sleeping etc. Soda-- I reckon that one is obvious. Empty calories or a bunch of chemicals, if it's diet.
But to drink 8 cups of water on top of whatever beverages we have, just to meet a quota, is silly. There are plenty of people on here who will insist that they only count actual water, but that's NOT necessary.
I agree with Unident-- use the color of your urine as a guide. If it's pale yellow, you're good. If it's clear, you're overdoing it for the sake of reaching an arbitrary goal.

I had the same problem and I drink about a gallon a day. If was very anoying at night. I never got a good nights sleep. Now I make sure I drink my water before 5 o'clock ( I only take sips after that) and I no longer have the night time bathroom trips. I still take many daytime trips but that doesn't bother so much. I am addicted to my water now though and must have it.
What 'some people say' is not supported by science.
You need as much water as your body demands.
If you're drinking only when thirsty, and your pee is a pale yellow colour, you're fine.
If you find yourself constantly running to the bathroom, your pee is clear, and/or you're drinking only to meet some predetermined target, you're probably drinking too much.
It is not true that we do not recognise thirst till too late or that most of us dehydrated and don't know it. Thirst is scientifically proven as an acceptable indication of needing to drink.
Drink if thirsty.
If not - don't.

No guarantees because we're all different, but my body adjusted. It took a few months, if I recall correctly. It's worth it ... keep at it ...

I wanna say your body adjusts...I've been drinking 64 ounces daily for more than a year, before that it was between 35-50 ounces so I can't remember if I was constantly running to the bathroom when I upped my water intake. But I try to drink most of my water while I'm not at work because that's a pain. I try to drink a 16 ounce bottle before work, one bottle throughout the day while I'm at work and 2 bottles after work so that I'm only going to the bathroom once or twice at work. But drinking water has so many benefits that I don't mind all the bathroom trips if it means I'm doing my body good :)
I have to be honest, I rarely meet my goal of 64 ounces of water per day. When I do, I find that I am in the bathroom constantly. Some people say to drink half of your weight in water which would put me around 93 ounces and is very intimidating. My question is: Do the excessive bathroom trips ever subside? If I consistently drank 64 ounces every day, would my body adjust and stop trying to get rid of it all, or do I just have to get used to always having a lot of bathroom time? I also would also like to start drinking green tea in the morning. I know tea is a diuretic and will only increase my problem. Any ways of coping with that?
