I don't care for many other sources of protein, so for me, no I have not been successful losing weight when cutting out meat. I get too hungry and binge.

no, you lose weight when you watch portions, plan well balanced meals and snacks, monitor intake, drink your water, get enought rest, and exercise.

I vary from day to day eating meat or not. The only meat I try to eat less of us beef since it is so high in fat. Otherwise, I haven't noticed that I lose more weight with or without it.

I think it would depend upon what you eat instead of the meat. Personally, I can't imagine living without eating meat. The only thing tastier than a good pork loin is a homemade chocolate chip cookie, fresh from the oven. Also, I would be very unhealthy because I don't like the taste of most other sources of protein.

I must admit the biggest single food that has made a difference to my weight loss so far is white bread. It has been a difficult one but by leaving it out completely seems to have aided more weight loss than any other single food.

I eat an almost vegan diet but I can't absorb certain vitamins so 2-3 times a week I have salmon, chicken or turkey. Otherwise I don't eat meat or seafood. I get in most of my nutrients by eating a plant based diet, getting in the fruits, vegetables, grains and beans etc...

I lose about 5 pounds pretty fast just by eliminating sugar and white flours and food product from my diet~

Although I do not touch red meat I have many friends that do and the ones who cannot loose weight on a meat diet all seem to be eating processed meat. Meat brought from the local butchers shops in this area come from animals slaughtered and farmed all within the county, less than 50 miles radius where many of the animals feed on grass outside. Friends of mine who eat this stuff in moderation seem to be able to loose weight albeit very gradually. The issue here seems to be more based on processed meats as opposed to organic or fresh meat.
I personally get my proteins from nuts, pulses and fish.

I fail miserably when I don't eat meat, so I always have some at least twice a day. Don't have enough energy when I don't have it.

When I became a vegetarian back in 2003 I steadily lost the 50 pounds to my goal in 11 months. I do believe that the hormones, steroids, anti-biotics and other objectionable things used to fatten meat, fattened me. I did do lots of research on vegetarian nutrition and took in many seminars by doctors who championed vegetarianism. Bonuses to a plant based diet still feel most rewarding. emoticon

I haven't really had quicker weight loss since reducing meat consumption.

I don't think meat vs. no meat is enough of an answer to the question. I think it will depend on how someone was eating before they changed their diet and what they are eating after. Meat might be prepared in a healthy way as part of a balanced meal and the meatless meal could be all highly processed foods.

I am not a big meat eater, so giving up meat does not make a major difference in my weight loss. If I give up sugar, that's when the weight loss occurs.

I believe that our bodies are made to need meat. It has great benefits. I don't like to eat a whole lot of it though. Everything in moderation.

My husband and I started eating vegan for my health (to lower cholestoral and blood sugar) and within 3 months, my blood sugar was normal, my cholestoral was below 200, and I had lost 10 pounds with doing absolutely no exercise and eating as much as I wanted of only vegan items. I didn't stick with it because I don't like a lot of veggies and I missed cheese and yogurt but I try to at least eat vegetarian and find that when I do, I lose better than when I have meat (which I can take or leave anyway).

I noticed if I eat more meat, I tend to not snack as much. Seems meat fills me up so I do lose more.

when I was on chemo my B-12 plummented and the doctor literally instructed me to go buy a steak and eat the whole thing - it worked and I sure enjoyed myself - I LOVE MEAT

I really think that if you make changes to your diet that your body reacts. I am not a big meat-eater, almost vegan, but I have had to make big changes to my diet because I found out that my iron has been extremely low. Best choice is liver, which thankfully I have always liked. I cook it with onions in real butter and have lost more weight.

I tend to get in food ruts, find things I like and have them regularly, but I do notice that when I try new things or do things in a different way, that my body will shake out of a plateau. So that could be it.

I haven't tried cutting out meat completely, so I really couldn't answer this question. I would be curious to try for a week and see what happens. I love meat though, so it will be a challenge. I just try to limit my portion sized. Many meats are actually quite low in calories if eaten in moderation.

I was a vegetarian for ethical reasons related to love of animals for many decades in the earlier part of my life and hands down I had a harder time controlling my weight, plus my lifelong problem of anemia was much more difficult to control. When I became an omnivore again about a decade or so ago, I included meat, fish and poultry in my diet and really have had a better overall result as far as getting to a desirable weight and keeping it off, plus I feel better. Still love animals, but for me, vegetarian is not the way to live.

I've been vegetarian for 5 months, and I have noticed that it is easier for me to make healthier choices without eating meat. When I go to parties, or even just looking around the house, many of my go-to easy, quick choice are meat based. I have to be intentional about making food. And when I'm thinking about making it, I always end up choosing to make healthier things. It also limits me stopping at fast food places or going out. I'm also not inclined to choose carb-y, snacky, salty things either. I'm not a big fan of bread (never have been... not enough flavor for me!) and too much cheese upsets my stomach. So, I'm not replacing meat with high calorie or high carb items.

I lose more weight when I don't eat starches.

I eat only lean meat (chicken, turkey, & occasionally pork) and rarely red meat.
I've learned to limit my meat to no more than 5 oz a serving and eat lots of non-starchy veggies with it.

when I originally went vegetarian, I lost a lot of weight, but I think that's probably because the only meat I was eating was crappy fast food burgers and chicken. I think it all just depends on how much you're eating with anything. even if cutting out some of the meat from your diet doesn't continue to help you lose weight, it may still provide some other health benefits like lowering risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and others.

either way, do what works for you!

I personally don't believe in eliminating foods to lose weight and that would include meat. Moderation through portion control by measuring and counting every morsel that enters your mouth is what works. Thus said, I don't eat tons of meat.

Thank you everyone for the great input, I haven't eaten any form of animal flesh for about a week now I already haven't eaten beef for more than a decade. I already limit my carbs because of high blood sugar. I guess the change really isn't the reduction in meat per say more the reduction in extra calories from meat versus eating bean calories would make a difference in the pound drops. Keep up the great work everyone I appreciate the response, and the amazing motivating people here.

Yes. It's easier for me to consume less calories if I don't eat meat. I have no idea if it's the fact that it's meat or not (although I lost the most weight by eating little meat and cutting out milk and cheese). I limited myself to yogourt from the dairy aisle and ate mostly fish, shrimp or lamb when I ate meat.

I'm just the opposite. I would prefer to eat a vegetarian diet, but my body can't handle all of the carbs. I have to eat animal protein if I want to lose weight. I still do not eat red meat, but I am consuming chicken, turkey and seafood.

I would love to eat brown rice and beans every day, but I gain weight that way.

I haven't eaten meat in about one week and I notice without exercise or anything the scale has moved down by at least four pounds, it's not that I'm a vegan or anything I got sick from eating some meat and every since I'm been turned off from eating it.

So I thought this was a good question has anyone noticed quicker weight loss when eliminating meat or reducing the consumption of me?

Thanks for all replies, note I'm still getting plenty protein through beans, peanut butter you name it. It's been a challenge though since this isn't how I normally eat :o) emoticon emoticon
