Menopause is messing with my sleep a bit. I go right to sleep but only get about 4 hours before I wake up and am WIDE awake. I have found that the more movement and exercise I have during the day really helps me to sleep longer.

Sometimes. Coffee can keep me awake. Eating the wrong food will do it too. Mostly it is the cat waking me up to go out or come in!

As planned, talked it over with my doc and we agree to have a sleep study done. I actually had a Fitbit reading the other day saying I had awakened 22 times in 7.5 hours of sleep. Really? Very suspicious of these numbers, but I will let you all know what the sleep study involved.
I do...and, it's probably because I don't do anything all day. I usually do whatever's needed around the house and then play on the computer and watch TV. How do I get myself to exert a bit? I know I should exercise...I'm just lazy and know it. Just am NOT MOTIVATED!!!! I think that's the reason that I wake up after 2 or 2.5 hours sleep and sometimes that's it, or after an hour or so, sometimes I go back to sleep....it's nothing for me to wake up at 3am and be up till 7am...then, I could sleep till 11am!! That's not good and no matter what I do, it doesn't change. I do NOT want to take any sleeping pills...my doctor has suggested them, and since I live alone I prefer not to take them. If I sound depressed, I'm not...I'm actually a very happy person except when I discuss this subject.
Just can't sleep tonight. Usually do okay. Not tonight. Arg.

I too have become a restless sleeper in the last couple of years. I am going to see a sleep specialist in april to see if I have sleep apnea. I saw the fitbit in best buy today and I think I may invest in it. I have alot of weight to lose but I think starting off by tracking my steps will be good!

Like others I typically wake up a couple times a night, use the bathroom and fall right back to sleep. Imagine my surprise when I started using my Fitbit and got readings of waking up 7 to 9 times a night! Wow. I think I am a restless sleeper, changing positions a lot to ease achy joints, but this is worth a chat with my doctor at the next appointment. Thanks for the tips about melatonin and chamomile tea.

About 4 nights a week, I wake up in the wee hours. This is a problem. I sleep for 4 hours then wake for 2 hours and go back to sleep for 3 hours.

I have had more difficulty in the past 5 yrs or so than ever before. (other than solid block of insomnia when pregnant w/ 3rd child - go figure) Hormones do funny things... So I've had to look for things that help. * Stress really does affect what the brain does--awake or asleep. * Caffeine after 1pm does affect me. * Exercises makes a difference (positively) * If I have a prolonged period of nighttime difficulties, then I have found that time-release Melatonin has worked for me. (My understanding is that it is best to NOT be long-term solution.) (For whatever reason, I can't stand anything chamomile anything.)

I have the same problem. Lately I have been waking up with a racing heart just to add to my problems. I have to actively prepare for bed about an hour or two before bed....turn off electronics, turn down lights, read, listen to music, no exercising, eating or drinking alcohol. Usually if I do all then I will sleep better. I Always wake up but I have a better tendency to go back to sleep. Last night I woke with a racing mind again because I have some stressors going on but went back to sleep within a half hour or so, thank goodness. It is so so important to get the best sleep possible. I hope you find your solution.

I wake up a couple of times a night to use the bathroom, but recently I have been waking up with horrid pains in my hips when I lay on my sides. I have no idea why - I went to the chiropractor for pain in my lower back and he said it was because of the tendons in my hips. Gave me stretching exercises. Hoping Pilates and Yoga help me also.

I really agree with the getting up for a little while and then trying to go back to sleep; particularly if I am awake because I should have done something to prepare for the next day and I have not completed it. Sometimes just taking that few minutes and completing it gives me the release I need to get back to peaceful sleep. I must admit thought that sometimes I could recreate the wheel and I'd still be awake the rest of the night. I don't think there is an easy answer to this one.
I think everybody's different and different things can work for different people. I don't take any medication to help me sleep-- makes me feel more like I'm passing out and coming to, rather than actually sleeping. And screws me up for the whole day afterwards-- my brain's just foggy all day.
But medication can really help some people. Just as exercise can help some people. Doesn't seem to make any difference for me. Also doesn't seem to make any difference whether I've got something "big" weighing on my mind or not. I can have not a care in the world, and still not be able to sleep.
I read something the other day that talked about falling asleep to the tv or the radio-- something mindless, not talk radio or an action movie on tv. Just something that you can focus on, rather than whatever's on your mind. Doesn't help much with waking up during the night though.
I'm fortunate that it isn't every single night for me, it's off and on.

I feel your pain, believe me. Have you been prescribed any sleep medications? My doctor doesn't like for me to consistently not get enough sleep and he has written me prescriptions that for the most part, don't get used. However, if I go with very little sleep for a few days I will take something. I hate pills and try to limit what I take but your brain needs some rest. I can't sleep in the day either and if I do I get a headache. Well, it's almost 1:00am here and I must go prepare to "go to sleep". Nite nite, don't let the bed bugs bite.
What is sleep, I never sleep, I have so many medical conditions you can't sleep, I wish I could sleep it would be nice, I miss sleep and I can never sleep in the day so I just go without

I agree with you. If I stay in bed I tend to fret, toss and turn, literally torture. So, I get up and do something quiet to occupy my mind, quiet my soul. The thoughts then stop racing and I get sleepy again and can sleep but this can take awhile.... As you say, I never have problems sleeping but staying asleep is another matter. I disagree and agree with a previous poster though. I notice that I do badly if the tv is on in the room or I have any light distraction at all...and I mean things like a bright clock, night light, etc. however, listening to soft relaxing music soothes me and if I do so, I sleep better. I have Pandora for the iPhone and IPad which I use to play a station called relaxation radio that is nice, but I play it super soft so it does not bother me if I sleep.
Seeing as how it's 2:30 am and I am awake, I sure do have trouble sleeping sometimes. I don't have problems falling asleep, the issue is staying asleep.
I've had all kinds of tests done including a sleep study where you go to a place and get all hooked up to monitors and there's a closed-circuit camera so they can watch you. Nothing wrong. I just have insomnia. It comes and goes.
I would say though that I disagree with some of the things the PP said, particularly the "never get up out of bed" one. I think it's better to get up for a little while, find something relaxing to do (like reading), and then go back to bed. Rather than lie there in the dark and stress over not being able to sleep.
But, if you do have a sleep issue, never nap during the day, even if you are awake all night. When in bed, turn off the lights and don't listen to music or the TV. Never get up out of bed if you can't sleep, but stay there in the dark all night, in case you do fall asleep you will be in bed. Wear a face mask and have the room dark and cool.
Normally no.When I find I have a hard time going to sleep I get back up and right down everything that is on my mind. Normally after clearing my head I am ready for bed and sleep sound.

I will start tomorrow am for the first day for the rest of my life. I look forward to all the encouragement and duet and exercise programs to not only get I shape but feel better about myself. What a problem this has become! It is also detrimental for health and weight loss. Lately I have been playing relaxation music on my iPhone when I go to bed. I downloaded free apps from Pandora and they have Relaxation Radio and other good channels that help put my brain in a good relaxed state. I also have apps for sleep hypnosis, etc. I sleep better when I use one or the other, plus not going to bed with my IPad or the television on. I also have found that reading a book before bed versus an electronic version is better....no light in your face. I am willing to try anything to have a decent nights sleep.
