I drink ZipFizz (from Sams Club - powder mixed with water that fizzes) about twice a week. Sometimes I really need a little extra energy to get through my day.

aww - i'm sorry to hear should try to ween yourself off of's only going to make you need more and more to function. I had to do that with coffee recently and try to keep it down to 1 cup per week but the weening portion of it was hell...I had headaches for days! :( You can do it though!

No, they taste terrible and they make me have the pains in my stomach I get when I'm nervous when I'm not really nervous about anything. If I really do need caffeine, I'd rather take a caffeine pill.

I have used them when my kids are here and I need to stay up past my normal bedtime. Maybe one over the weekend. Never use them just for normal living....Seem to work....

They are not healthy. The school has banned all energy drinks. Even Monster drinks are not good for you.

I'd recommend looking at the label to see whether it says "Nutrition Facts" or "Supplement Facts." If it says "Nutrition Facts," then the product is being sold as a food and it has to list all of its ingredients and meet purity standards. If it says "Supplement Facts," then it's being sold as an unregulated supplement and there really aren't any rules controlling what they put in it or what they say on the label. They can't put in any prescription or illegal drugs and they can't use the word "treat" or "cure," but beyond that, they can say it has ingredients that aren't actually in it, and they can put things in it that they don't list.

The other problem with this particular type of supplement is that it's not standardized. One particular bottle might have 100mg of caffeine, about the same as a cup of coffee, and the next bottle might have 500mg or more. The same can happen with the vitamins that are in some of them-- one batch might not actually have any vitamins, and another might have a megadose. That's how it can be harmful; you can overdose on an amount that was fine for you another time.

If you need a caffeine energy boost, it's best to try coffee or tea. You'll know how much caffeine you're getting, it's cheaper, and you also get a few antioxidants in the process. Coffee might even protect you a little against certain liver problems and brain diseases. That link is too weak to be a reason on its own for drinking coffee, but if you're trying to choose between coffee and 5-hour energy and there's Alzheimer's or Parkinson's in your family, it's one more plus in favor of the coffee.

I don't drink caffeine at all. I am way too sensitive to it and it will keep me up until 3am. No can do.

I used to live off these things when I was in college. It was a horribly unhealthy, expensive habit, but I did what I could. I was up at 5am in order to make it to school on time, normally there until 3/4pm, off to work in the evenings until 9:30 and didn't get home until 11pm. I also worked that job on the weekends and a second job Friday and Saturday nights, not to mention the homework I had to do. Sleep was not very common for me, so I had power naps and 5 Hour Energy shots. I don't recommend this to -anyone-. I have not drank a single one of these since I finished college a couple years ago though, and don't plan to in the future.

considering I don't even do caffeine, I would imagine an energy drink would have me bouncing off the walls! The only 'energy drink' I use is Cran Energy (it's pretty mild). When I haven't slept well for several nights and have trouble staying awake at work, I'll drink a Cran Energy.

Sis has always used energy drinks and drinks Mt. Dew a lot. DH drinks 5 Hour Energy and other energy drinks. Sis & DH both have sleep apnea so I'm sure that contributes to feeling tired all the time.

I've seen several news stories about people who have ended up at the ER because they've gone WAY over the recommended quantity of energy drinks.

I drink them sometimes. Usually right before a big test that I spent the entire night before studying for. Another time I will take them is if I know I should work out but am being lazy and talking myself out of it. Drinking one will ensure that I work out so I don't "waste" the energy. I don't find the increase in energy lasts for five hours though, usually closer to 30 minutes or so.

I've tried them. I didn't care for them.

The occasional energy drink isn't going to hurt you, but yes, it can be unhealthy to overdo it. I would consider several a week to be overdoing it, let alone 1+ every day.

I don't drink the 5 hour energy drinks, but I do drink full throttle energy drinks. It's a terrible habit, very expensive. It's become an addiction now after several years. I'd love to see some research on these things.

I've weaned myself off the diet sodas only to get hooked on a new form of caffeine: the 5 hour energy drinks. I was delighted to find that they now have an "extra strength" 5 hour energy drink.

I do like the bottle says and not consume over 2 a day (normally I only have 1). But I'm wondering if these drinks could be unhealthy...what do you think?
