I personally like to discuss issues not related to or about religion, or politics. I really try not to intimidate, or offend anyone, but with this many folks I guess someone is always upset emoticon emoticon emoticon

I come for both. I like to join in on the discussions. I get lots of different ideas from the message boards.

I find it a great place to see how other people feel about issues that are lifestyle related. Exchanging views is the best way to get enlightened...even if some seem off the deep end. An open mind leads to better understanding

Both. I feel this message board is set up for points, since the original post gets buried. I enjoy the shorter informative threads where people do ask for help, over the long, one word answer posts.

There are so many message boards. This one isn't really user friendly, as much as the site itself is.

Both, sometimes I find information I didn't know I was interested in and it will spark an idea for motivation, a recipe, or just about anything. It makes me feel like I have support even if I don't know anyone here. :) emoticon

@HEALTHY4UNI Many times the questions on SparkCafe are to elicit only "one" word responses. I see you are new to SparkPeople and may be still finding your way through the Website to find what you can gleen as helpful information. For me one-word answers are a reminder that helps to point me into a positive direction. The reminder is to "put" something on my to-do list or to put my frame of mind towards my goals.
I have found that most in-depth conversations will be within SparkTeams I belong, SparkPages, SparkBlogs, SparkFriends....etc. SparkTeams and friends SparkPages Blogs... are where I find the most helpful information. Coupled with the SparkCafe, I find SparkPoints page as being the best guide, or plan, to follow. SparkPoints helps towards directing my focus towards my goals. By following the SparkPoints page it reminds me to complete my Nutrition, Fitness, Spark articles, Huddles....etc. The articles, here in Spark, have been invaluable to me in working towards my goals.

Good luck with your goals and finding the information you are seeking that will help towards those goals.

****DISCLAIMER**** I only read the original post so my opinion wouldn't be tainted.

I am a OCD when it comes to control; personally I'd LOVE to have the ability to delete frivilous threads or posts but I can't so I live with it. I regulate myself by trying not be annoyed with threads/posts that bother me. One Word Posts use to bother me here in the cafe' for the longest time. I would seriously AGGRIVATED with them. Then I decided that it wasn't a problem SP members had, it was ME who had the problem, so I stopped caring about one word posts.

I have set myself free!

I just don't care anymore and SOMEtimes a one word response is all that's needed but if that one word reply makes that poster look stupid I now laugh rather than get ticked off and with this paradigm shift of mine I find myself laughing more and more because there are a LOT of stupid and non-relevent one word replies here in the cafe'.

As for in-depth discussions (about whatever) here in the cafe' we do have them and they may not be plentiful but they are here, you just have to stick around long enough to see them.

RE: Points

Again, this use to be a pet peeve of mine but no longer since I can't do anything about people posting for points only, oh well, I had to put on my big boy pants and suck it up. I suggest others do the same.

Now, as for posting a reply without first reading the original post, c'mon, there's just no excuse for that. I often times title my posts in a misleading manner just to see if people actually read my original post and the intelligent and refined message boards posters do, the others don't, it's just too damn funny to see the replies when they have NOT read the original post.

@Healthy4uni: I can totally tell that one-word replies bother you but I should warn you about sending private messages to members who have started one word type threads and ranting at them about it, those members can and most likely WILL report you and then you can get kicked off of SP for harrassing other members that way. Please read the SP guidelines. Thanks.

FIRECOM - I agree on both points. I always read all the comments which is why I never reply to threads with a lot of comments already.

One more point, if I may. I sense that some, if not most, of us don't bother to read the comments prior to replying. I think that it is important, at least for me, to read the previous comments.

End of rant.

Some of both. Primarily discussion but the points are a great byproduct.

3/17/13 12:46 P

Both. I actually do want to know what ppl had for breakfast or what movie they watched last and if it was good, etc. but also I need the points. They motivate me and I can use them to buy goodies for ppl--I love collecting points. And I love discussions too.

I definitely come for discussion. Points, to me, are inconsequential. I'm here for the tools and for the support. The points are merely a perk.

I come for both. I prefer discussions, but if I can't find anything I want to respond to, I'll just do the one post messages.

There used to be many more "real" threads on the non-game boards, but looks like they've all been taken over by the one-post wonders.

I come here for discussion. In fact, there are specific posters that I look for that always get lively discussions going on this forum. KJFITNESSDUDE is definitely one of them. I will scroll through the pages until I find something that interests me to discuss.

I come for the discussion. It is really the main thing that keeps me logging in on the site. I like to discuss weight loss, maintenance, and nutrition topics as well as topics that I relate to that may have nothing to do with weight loss or nutrition. Points don't inspire me. Like others, I have to search through threads to see if there is anything I feel is discussion worthy.

Both but if I don't find a thread I can add something useful to, I go to the game room.

Discussion only. I have plenty of points, which accumulated over many years through no effort on my part, and they are more than enough for giving out SparkGoodies which is their only purpose as far as I'm aware.

I scroll through the first page (rarely first two pages) of the different forums looking for threads with fewer than 20 responses. When I see such a thread, I read the preview to see if I want to participate. On the cafe,.... I'm lucky to find even one such thread per day. There are so many threads with thousands of responses. I don't see the point in posting to them as I don't believe I can read all the responses and then contribute in any meaningful way.

I love discussing fitness and nutrition and weight loss as it's a major hobby of mine and I only have two or three people in my "real life" who are interested in the topic, so SP is a great outlet for that. So I continue to keep an eye out for good threads every day!

Personally I don't think the cafe is the best place for serious questions or advice. Those kinds of threads can get lost here. It's a 'cafe' after all, I think its meant to be light hearted.

I honestly don't pay attention to points. I come to the message boards to read, discuss and support.

I don't mind reading and responding to some frivolous questions like asking about pets people have or holiday plans but I'm not going to read or post to a lengthy thread about if people drink water each day. I don't find those type of threads particularly motivating or interesting.

I barely pay attention to the Sparkpoints (didn't actually realize I "earn points" for posting in the forums for quite some time).

I use the forums (Cafe and other sections) for information support and discussion.

Since the Café is specifically designated for discussion and not for simple response question threads, I am wondering how many people believe that the Spark Points are really the greater reward here on Spark People. I personally come to the Café to find interesting topics of discussion and find no real reward in posting a response to a question that no one really cares about or will ever read! I am trying to learn what is most healthy for making lifestyle changes to improve the quality of my families life! Yes, Spark Points help to encourage me to use all of the resources available on the Spark People web-site but if I zoom in, grab the points and zoom out my way, I feel that I'd be cheating myself by not gaining the full level of help that is offered here!

So please share your perspective and let us know if you are here for the Spark Points and why you feel that such frivolous pursuits are worth the effort? You might help others gain a value for and activity that we just don't connect with or understand.

Or explain how you have benefited by using the Spark Points to guide you to the greater rewards and what those rewards have meant to you!

What you share here might have a profoundly & beneficial affect on someone's future.

Or you might just get a Spark Point and help yourself attain your own personal goal of being a wealthy Spark Point recipient!

The choice is truly yours and no one can condemn you for it. For me, I really appreciate the extra effort that others put forth to show that they care!
