Definitely watch the carbohydrates. A lot of people don't like the idea of low carb, but if you're a type 2 diabetic, it's the best way to control your blood sugar. If you're type 1, you can control it by insulin, but the essence of type 2 is that insulin doesn't work well for you.

You might consider seeing a diabetes educator -- I did and it helped me tremendously. I aim for 3 meals a day and three snacks. Each meal should contain about 45 grams of carbohydrate and no more than 15 grams of fat; each snack should contain about 15 grams of carbohydrate and 5 grams of fat. For meals, I use the new plate diagram and fill it with 1/2 non-starchy vegetables, 3 oz. lean protein, and 1/2 c. of a starch (sweet potato, whole grain, piece of fruit, etc.) For snacks, I have a carbohydrate and a lean protein.

I am not a diabetes educator or a doctor. The information above is what I learned, and it is working well for me.

Sounds like you are newly diagnosed. Carbs and sugar are the most important and portion control, so yes calories do count too! Vegtables should be your best freind, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cabbage. Avoid all oils except canola or extra virgin Olive Oil which is good for diabetics. Avoid starchy vegetables such as potatoes, parsnips, squash, and go easy with carrots, beans, peas and beets. If you eat a potatoes eat the red as it's less starchy. Canned Sweet Corn has a high sugar content and makes your blood sugar spike. Limit your sodium and avoid, pretzels, cheese puffs, dried fruit, bacon, pizza and pasta. Eat only Dreamfield's pasta which has 5 carbs and only 2 ounces at a time.Avoid Fried Chicken, absolutely no Kentucky Fried or high fat meats, Avoid all White Bread, Many margarines contain high levels of trans fats, a danger for diabetics. All Sugar: White sugar, honey, cake, jelly, jam, ice cream, pastries, canned juice, chocolates, pie, syrup, doughnuts, artificial sweeteners, cream and cookies foods should be avoided with diabetes. Eat 4 Walnuts a day to protect your heart. Almonds are a good snack ..about 10. Eat something every two hours to stablize your blood 4 tbs of cottage cheese, 1/2 cup of brown rice. Always have a protein and a carb together as it helps stablize numbers. I try to give a tip every day about diabebetes. Read Success hints everyday and you'll learn quickly.

Hi Nea,

Not sure if you are Type 1 or Type 2, but either way, diabetes is a balancing act between carbohydrates, insulin (or possibly other meds if you are Type 2) and activity. Sounds like maybe you are new to diabetes? If you are Type 2 -- here is a great (and free) resource that includes a chapter on what to eat.

So to answer your question, carbohydrates (not just sugar) are key. I'm not a fan of super low carb diets, and believe moderation and balance are the ticket. If you are eating a healthy diet with moderate carbohydrates, it may be your medication or activity level that needs tweaking (in consultation with your healthcare team).

I'm not a medical professional...but have lived will with Type 1 diabetes for 19 years. Now if only I could slow down this middle age weight creep!

I am not in a position to offer advice on diabetes. You may want to post this question on the Diet/Nutrition boards to see if one of the experts can guide you or you may want to contact your own health-care provider to see what he/she recommends.

I hope this helps!

Do I watch the calories or the sugar for my diabetes? Seems that if I stay within my calories my sugar is high. Thanks!
