I bought what I thought was a sweet potato but now I'm not sure! LOL It was orange on the inside.... but it was sold as a sweet potato? There is over 100 cal. difference!

I don't know that there's a difference. What I do know is that they are all yummy emoticon

They are different varieties of sweet potato. I have also wondered if there are nutritional difference like maybe the darker orange ones having more Vitamin A. are unlikely to find those in grocery stores in the US. Even the canned "yams" are actually sweet potatoes, not yams.

I personally didn't like the texture of the yellow ones, even after cooking, but I really like the orange ones. So, I'd say the best one is the one you're more likely to eat. It's like kale... it has a TON of nutritional value and everyone says how great it is for you, but I don't like it at all, so what good is it to me if I'm not going to eat it?

Yams have a brown or black skin. Sweet potatoes have an orange or reddish skin. What you commonly see in the US in the grocery stores, are indeed sweet potatoes and not yams. There are differences in the color of the skin and flesh, depending on the particular variety of sweet potato. I don't know if those color variations-- pale orange vs. a darker, richer orange-- make for differences in the vitamin content but I think you could google it and see.

Curious what everyones opinion is on the difference between a yellow and orange sweet potato or if an orange one is a yam? Had a discussion with a friend and I feel they are the same (but orange one having vitamin A)....and always thought yams were bigger and less common and she thinks the orange ones are yams with no nutritional value and the yellow are far superior..thoughts?
