I am a former soda addict-regular or diet no matter which brand or flavor. I knew it wasn't healthy for me but no matter what I did to stop or reduce amount, never worked, Know what? I found out it really Wasn't the Soda, it was the Carbonation I was addicted to! I like the sensation of the tingle, slight burn (some sodas add a small amount of some type of acid such as phosphuric-not sure about spelling- for that sensation) , etc in my mouth. I began drinking flavored sparkleing water, or added Crystal lite or Kool Aid to plain sparkeling water as I weaned myself from soda. I began to drink less soda and been soda free for 4 years. I have also cut back on the sparkeling water a lot.

Huh. This is something that has plagued me for years. I love my coke zero. Love it. I have quit drinking it twice. The first time for about a year, but wanted more flavor with meals so started up again. The second time was about 2.5 years ago, where I quit for 2 years...and gained 20 POUNDS! I kept hearing people say how bad it was for me...the artificial sweeteners...the chemicals....so I quit. I never felt any different when I cut out sodas, except for gaining back 20 of the 30 pounds I had lost. Now....do I sweat that I MIGHT get cancer from drinking diet sodas, or should I worry more about the diabetes I have a higher chance of getting (runs in family) with all this added weight?
I have found a compromise and found what works for me...I drink only water throughout the day, and drink a glass of coke zero with dinner.
I figure I don't smoke, I eat my fruits and veggies, I only drink alcohol once a month...so I allow myself a coke zero treat here and there. You have to do what you feel is right.

I'm addicted to Dt. Mt. Dew as well. In the process of cutting it out. I'm down to one a day. I'm not a coffee drinker, so my morning drink is a Dt. Mt. Dew.

I have a bad addiction to Diet Mt Dew. I have been slowly drinking less since the beginning of the year, and I can tell a difference in not just my weight but in myself period. I still struggle with it but have decided that starting today that I am going to stay away from soda for at least a month. I have heard that doing something for 30 days makes it a habit. Well, I want to make it a habit to not depend on drinking diet drinks out of habit. I am not claiming that I will never drink another soda again. However, It will no longer be a habit but something I consume on occasions if I had one. For now though, I will focus on kicking the habit.

You can't by what an effect of a 'food' has on us because of an effect it has on another species. We aren't the same. Dogs and cats eat many things that would make us horribly sick, but they thrive on them.
KARENRAU123 - If you want a drink and you don't like water, there is no harm in using diet soda. It may be that you can get away with mixing it with water. I do this all the time in the summer and it is nice. I use about 3/4 water.
Have you thought about trying fruity teas rather than the plain 'bog-standard' ones. I quite enjoy lemon/ginger ones and a peachy one. Using water and putting a squeeze of lemon juice in is quite good, too!
Chocolate kills dogs so imagine what it is doing to us....!!

I was always told aspartame is a highly addictive sugar.....I was off pop for quite some time and recently started back up but I am quitting again....no pop...
Also, aspartame kills ants so imagine what it is doing to our systems...when you have ants you can put down aspartame and it draws the ants to it and when they eat it...it causes them to basically explode....ok, no more pop for me.

I was told that reducing or eliminating diet soda from my diet will help me lose weight. I'm not sure why diet soda is so bad but I'm willing to give it a try, but is replacing diet soda with crystal light really any different? They both have aspartame. I don't want to drink plain water all the time and I am not a tea or seltzer person.

I like idea of the Sodastream. I think I will try it because I love carbonated drinks.
I gave up diet soda and now drink green tea instead... It has a lot of benefits... I drink coffee to mostly in the morning.

Thanks to all of the comments. Some great ideas to try! I'm in such a habit of reaching for diet coke that I forget its bad for you. Also, I'm trying to lose 25 pounds and cutting out something with 0 calories is hard, but the overall goal is health no necessarily losing.

You might try getting a Sodastream machine and making your own seltzer. You can add flavoring, either the syrup they sell or just fruit juice. I started out using a splash of juice, now I just like the plain bubbly water. When I taste commercial canned soda now, it doesn't even register as a beverage, it's more like horribly artificial chemical swill. I'm amazed I used to crave it.

Just sharing my experience....
about 15 years ago, I had a long and boring drive for 65 minutes to and from work.
so I got a liter bottle and filled it with water and two of the stadium red cups.
I kept my water drinking experience separate from my other liquid intake.
M-Fri, I would pour the water into the red cups--filling them twice, on the way to work
and I would drink the water as much as I would tolerate.
For me, it worked. Later, I had a fall back plan when I started to cut my pepsi intake down.
I have often been willing to drink reg water without the pepsi.
How about this for motivation... diet sodas with artificial sweetners act as a super salt, meaning you retain lots of water, also I think I heard of some study that states artificial sweetners make you crave more carbs - you end up eating about 300 more calories a day anyway! There's also the thing out there about aspartame and messing up your brain. Plus the additives in diet soda leech calcium from your bones. :0 I don't know what's definately true and what's not but those are good motivators for me anyhow! I cut out diet coke this week and so far I've drank about 7 small cans of lemon perrier instead! I think i'll try the polar sparkling water, the perrier even with the lime wasn't flavored enough for me but I did find that I definately liked the carbonation.

I don't know what it is in diet drinks that I'm addicted to either but its frustrating. I know its not the caffeine either b/c I drink caffeine free diet drinks a lot of time. I feel like I can't eat any meal without a diet drink and for breakfast I drink 3(!)....maybe its the carbonation that I like, I don't know. I drink around 6 cans of diet sundrop per day which I know is not good for me.

At one point in my life, I drank 4-5 cans of REGULAR coke a day..quit cold turkey. I didn't think it was an addiction, just a bad habit, so I just decided to stop one day and didn't notice any adverse withdrawal effects because I was so out of tune with my body.

I am a diet coke addict also. I stop at the circle k every morning before I go to work and get a 44oxzcoke zero. I know this is not healthy but can't seem to break the habit. I keep water or tea by me but I love the diet coke. HELP!

I used to drink 4-5 cans of Diet DP a day. I decided to cut it out except for occasional treats (one can a week if I really want one.) My trick was to keep my water bottle on hand at all times and constantly drink from it. If I start my day off right, I also tend to finish better. After a week or two off, I found the craving had disappeared.

Sparkling water works great from me. If you want your caffiene fix, drink unsweetened ice tea. It took me a while to get used to the taste of unsweetened ice tea, but now I do not even like the taste of sweet tea any more.
The best, best, best brand of seltzer water is Polar (if you live on the east coast). They have the usual fruity flavors, but they also have some vanilla and chocolate flavors, which can really help with the sweet cravings, but with no sugar or artificial sweeteners. At a distant second, Trader Joes makes decent seltzer which has good flavors.

Another Diet Coke addict here!!! Interestingly, I don't like ANY kind of sparkling water. I sure wish I did. It's also NOT a caffeine addiction because I often drink caffeine free.
Any ideas on what the heck I'm actually addicted to in my Diet Coke?
I like Becky's plan though ... !!!! And I'd never heard the "no more than 32 ounces a day" deal. Thankfully, that means I'm not as bad as I thought.
I am also hooked on diet soda - diet coke mostly. If you're like me and love carbonated things, I'm planning to replace with lemon perrier starting tomorrow. :)

Altho' I never used to drink a lot of it, a long time ago I decided to reduce it further, when I did drink it. What I did was gradually reduce the amount in a glass and replace it with water. Now when I have some (in the summer mainly) it will be about 20% with the remaining 80% water. I also sometimes add it to a cold, flavoured tea, or a fruit smoothie (without milk/yoghurt added). It is refreshing and a change to what I normally drink. When I DO drink it, 1 litre will last an entire week.

It really is like every other health change. It starts with setting a goal and making a plan. For example: Week 1: I will have no more than 5 (12 ounce) diet pops a day. Week 2: I will have no more than 4 Week 3: I will have no more than 3
You make the plan that works best. A general recommendation for diet drinks is no more than 32 ounces daily. Cut back slowly week by week until you get to your goal amount.

Hi! I've been drinking an absurd amount of diet Pepsi for the past two years. Last year, I was consuming 8-10 cans a day. This year, I haven't been tracking my drink intake but I'm guessing its closer to 1 liter a day. I've stopped drinking a lot of diet Pepsi, but it has taken a while. Does anyone have advice on how to stop drinking diet soda all together? I drink water, coffee, and tea, but I love the taste of diet soda. Help please!
