Ok, that is something I would like you to elaborate on... are you saying that prescription diuretics, the pills prescribed to those with hypertension and congestive heart failure, are really harmful to the body? Be very careful what you say, and never say things you cannot back up.

I drink about 150 oz of water a day including a 8oz cup of dandelion root tea with my dinner. No adverse effects here.

I have personally experienced reduced bloating since I started taking a cup of dandelion tea a day about 3 months ago.

I would rather take dandelion than take a prescription diuretic. I was prescribed one for my fibrocystic breasts and once I researched the drug I never took it. Diuretic's are over prescribed and really harmful to the body.

Perhaps it is the "other unhealthy behaviors" that are dangerous and not the dandelion.

Just trying to save the reputation of a wonderful little plant. emoticon

It is a matter of degrees. Dandelion root can be dangerous for people who take certain prescription diuretics, as that can increase the risk of potassium problems. It can also be dangerous for people who are practicing other unhealthy behaviors in combination, such as extreme calorie and fluid restriction. The mindset of using diuretics and laxatives for quick weight loss is also dangerous, emotionally and physically.
I agree with you, though, that a little cup of dandelion tea, in the setting of an otherwise healthy person, is fine.
Messing with fluid balance for the purpose of losing a quick pound is not healthy or safe.

Dandelions are NOT dangerous!

There are plenty of foods that have laxative and diuretic effects. Rhubarb for example is a potent laxative but it isn't harmful. Coffee is a diuretic and it's not harmful.

Dandelion tea transfers magnificent amounts of minerals and vitamins: A, C, D, E, & B complex, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, choline, and boron, etc. when infused in hot water.

I think dandelion root is more of a diuretic than a laxative. It can cause problems with dehydration, and high potassium levels. It works in the kidneys to cause them to produce more urine, rather than in the intestines. If you were dehydrated, that could actually cause constipation.
Either way, laxative and diuretic use are both dangerous, and cause most of their (temporary) weight loss through fluid loss.

It's funny that it's supposed to be a laxative bc I was nothing but constipated trying that mix. I tried it for 3 days but it was getting really bad so I just switched back to regular water. I do like the taste actually though..

I tried dandelion and broke out in spots. Turns out with my hayfever I have a definite allergy to dandelion and other plants in that family. I am very careful with herbal infusions, which dandelion tea is.

I drink a cup of dandelion/nettle tea almost every evening. It's tasty and good for you too.

Tiffany, your body is not a toilet. You can't flush it. Your body is already set up to clear itself of "toxins" pretty well using your liver and bladder.

Don't take nutrition advice from Jillian Michaels, either; she's a salesman and a personal trainer, NOT a dietician.

Fasting to lose weight is not effective. You will likely lose some water weight, but will then regain that weight lost when you rehydrate and start eating again.

Don't abuse your body. Skip the wild detox fasts and quick fixes.

Detoxing is a solution in search of a problem. To sell you detox materials, many sites will claim your body builds up "toxins" from the chemical-rich diet we tend to have these days, and that you need to use their product to remove these toxins.

Toxins have never been shown to exist.

Your body does not need detoxing. If you eat fresh fruit and vegetables, get lots of water and fibre, and have a balanced diet from all food groups, limiting junk food - then you will have a healthy body.

You were dehydrated because you were taking a laxative for seven days.

The constant fluid loss cause by laxative use leads to dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration include tremors, weakness, blurred vision, fainting and dizziness, kidney damage and even death.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, laxative weight control is a myth. Weight loss from laxatives usually consists of loss of water, minerals, electrolytes and indigestible fibers. The bowel movements contain small amounts of food, fat and water. Lost water weight returns when your body rehydrates.

taking laxatives for weight loss or 'detox' purposes is not a good idea. Please do some research on the dangers of laxatives: heart problems, dehydration etc...

I tried the Jillian Michaels water you are talking about. It did work to help flush out everything and I was not bloated at all at the end of the 7 days. However, I did not really lose pounds as it claims and I was EXTREMELY dehydrated everyday, which is strange since you are drinking so much.

Does anybody know if drinking dandelion root tea is a good as a detoxer? I've done some research on the web and found a recipie by Jillian Michaels. It's a 7 day " fast" in which you mix 60 oz of water, 1 dandelion root tea bag, 1tbspn of no sugar cranberry juice and 2tbspn of lemon juice. It's pretty good. You definetly taste the lemon. It's supposed to flush you out, if you drink it everyday for 7 days straight. You can still eat on this fast. But I was just wondering if anybody knows about this or has had results with it.
