It's already been proven that even if a restaurant does post the calories most of the time it's inaccurate.
And that is why I keep eating out to a minimum. And when I do I call it a splurge day and I don't worry about the calories.

I wish it was a requirement for restaurants to list their nutritional information. At least then we would have some idea of what we were actually eating! I find I am cooking more and more at home from scratch so I can be absolutely how much and what I am consuming! Many times it tastes better too!! emoticon

There's good cooks and bad cooks - there's good servers and bad servers. Going to a restaurant is a crap shoot. You never know what you'll be getting.

Why can't restaurants be consistent and if you tell someone you can't have sugar so hold the syrup why would they bring you food with added sugar in it??

Well, because the server likely didn't know, anyway.
You don't know if it's pre-mixed batter, which may or may not be full of chemicals, anyway.
It could have been powdered, where they just add water.

Regarding the nuts - they may just have grabbed whatever was on hand.

Telling them you can't eat sugar, or are diabetic, or whatever doesn't always result in complete satisfaction.

Yep, exactly why I can't eat out anymore.

I always check out the restaurant before we go there to make sure their meals ARE healthy.

As our dietitian tells us, call it a "splurge day" and move on. I carry a baggie filled with raw cauliflower in my purse, bring something like that with you, and order and ice tea with lemon and sit and grin at everyone else.

Before I go to anywhere I look up the nutrition info on the website. I guess they could make it a little different than it is on their website, but I haven't noticed any differences.

Next time you go out to eat, see if they have the nutritional information online, that way you can make your meal decision based on that. You would be surprised! My husband thought going with a salad at the local pizza chain would be a better choice. NOPE, get that slice of pizza with a side insalata baby! :)

I think this is the reason for inconsistency. On any given day you have different people working in the kitchen.

Personally I've never found a restaurant where I could eat "healthy" food....even so-called healthy choices may end up high in fat, calories, sugar, etc, because you have no idea what the kitchen staff is doing to your dinner!

When I'm dieting or trying to eat super-healthy I don't eat out...ever. I cook everything at home. Which sucks sometimes--but if I want a "break" and just want to hit a restaurant I have to be prepared to live with the consequences.

The silver lining--I've saved 25% of our income in the last 5 years because we no longer eat out....gotta love a ginormous savings a ginormous bottom!

most servers have no idea what's in the food you order; often the prep folks don't either. It would be really nice if they would admit to not knowing rather than guessing, or just giving the answer they think you want to hear. Many of the menu items are partially pre-made (sauces, dressings, etc), so nobody really knows all the ingredients on your plate.

I worked in many chain restaurants over the years. The ONE place I worked where we could without fail tell you the ingredients in the food will probably surprise most folks - Del Taco. I don't know if they still work this way, but when I worked there we made EVERYTHING fresh in the store (even chips and 'refried' beans). The refried beans were made daily by cooking dried pintos, then mashing them with a high speed mixer. No lard. No preservatives. Too bad they don't have any locations near me any more. I guarantee you, when I'm out and about and I see a Del Taco and it's meal time...I'm indulging! I always loved their food. Even more once I worked for them.

About six months ago I ordered wholewheat pancakes with pecans it was good and seemed like a healthy choice, there was not a lot of almonds and they were natural with NO sugar/salt on them.

On Sat Hubby wanted to eat at Denny's for breakfast.
I Ordered 2 wholewheat pancakes with almonds again,
I told her I can't have sugar so please hold the syrup I was fine with butter.

When they arrived they looked so good and I was happy with the first bite. BUT after a couple bites I noticed they had used a ton of pecans that were roasted in butter & brown sugar.
I had never seen so many sweetened nuts in pancakes before.
I was NOT happy because if I reordered them hubby would either be done with his meal or it would get cold on him. So I did eat half of it, BUT that made me feel guilty about the calories and I was worried the sugar would make me feel ill/bad in the next hour or 2.

Why can't restaurants be consistent and if you tell someone you can't have sugar so hold the syrup why would they bring you food with added sugar in it??

You could see it was NOT premixed batter because the saucy pecans looked dumped into the center of the pancakes, and the order from a earlier visit was a small amount of natural nuts mixed evenly through out the batter. It was prepared in 2 completely diferent ways.
