I really like the shopping metaphor. I'll have to keep that in mind.
When I'm about to binge, I try on clothes that are too small for me, things I used to be able to fit in and want to be able to again.
Also, I think about how during a binge I'm not even tasting the food really, so if I'm gonna go off my diet, I'd rather do it for one portion that I'm gonna enjoy.

I think about morning and stepping on the scale and how bad I'll feel if I allow that food to go into my mouth, and how stuffed and bloated I would feel if I did.

yay! awesome callmecarrie! It makes my day to help someone, however little I did lol... how true is it though, when you blow your diet at night on something salty and wake up to 5 lbs on that scale, and get sooo angry that all you had to do was not eat the salty, crappy, whatever you did the night before?? Guilt sucks! and at least for me, guilt is what has me throwing in the towel every time! If we recognize stuff like this, it can't help but bring us one step closer to stopping the binges and mindless eating once and for all
I just came home from work tired and hungry, and 35BYMAY, I read your first post here and put down the bag of cheddar popcorn. One serving was OK, but I don't want to eat half the bag, because I remember how good I feel when I step on the scale and I have nothing to feel 'guilty' about.

oh also, I tell myself that I am taking time away from my little boy to work out and do all these things to get healthy, so if I binge, all of that is a complete waste of time that I could have spent with my family. So that definitely pushes me to stick to the plan.

I imagine what the scale will say tomorrow if I DON'T binge. I get so excited jumping on the scale in the morning when I stick to the plan, and it is sure defeat if I binge the night before. That helps, because I know a binge puts the scale up immediately at least 2-3 lbs from salt alone, and not binging keeps that scale moving in the right direction!

if I am at home, I go back to my bedroom and pull out the jeans I was wearing at my highest weight (and they were skin tight) and ask myself... "do I REALLY want these to fit me again"?
If I am at work, I have a picture of me at my highest weight saved on my hard drive and I open it and stare at it. I ask myself "do I REALLY want to look like that again"?
Then I go to the website for Mud on the Mountain and remind myself what I am working so hard for!

add it to the nutrition tracker before eating. Looking at the total will usually smack me into reality!
think about if I might be thirsty... what the scales said last... if I might want to exercise instead..... think about alternative choices.

I ask myself if it's worth it, much like I do with shopping. It helps to think of calories sort of like dollars. Like, "are those cookies worth 300 dollars?, when I only have 1200 to spend?". or "Are those cookies worth 300 when I could use that 300 to eat 2 pieces of fruit and some cheese instead?". The analogy for that would be "Is that pretty pair of heels worth 300 dollars when I could buy 3 sweaters and a pair of jeans instead?" Also, the question might be "are those cookies worth cutting your dinner portion in half?" The answer there is usually no as well, since I try to make really delicious dinners, I want to be able to eat all of it!
OK so my suggestions don't really finish your sentence but they work for me anyway.
.....ask myself "Do you really want to put that in your mouth? Really?" If the answer is yes, eat it and enjoy it and be conscious of it. If the answer is no, the answer is no; put it down and do something else.
