In addition to all the other great tips I also add more zinc rich foods like chickpeas (hummus), dark chocolate, sesame seeds and garlic.

If you are into *natural* remedies....essential oils diffused in the air are great. An oil blend like on guard or theives supposedly kills germs in the air...know a teacher that uses an oil diffuser in their class room and wear the oils....I diffuse orange in the air to help with sickies in my home. Not sure if its bogus but I feel like its working! I haven't had a cold last more than a day or two and my 7mo old has yet to catch a cold. PS you can even eat some of these oils too just make sure they are high quality ;)

I always for for chicken soup of some kind (noodle, matzo ball, whatever) and lots of Vitamin C items - OJ, oranges, clementines, mandarins, etc.

You're definitely doing the right thing with the extra water. And don't push yourself to work out if your body is showing you how tired you are. A few extra days off won't hurt you if you are ill ... I find when I force myself to work out, I often get sicker.

Feel better soon!!!

i drink a green smoothie at least once a day, but when I start feeling under the weather I drink them about 2-3 times a day.

Last week I was waking up in the middle of the night with a sore throat so I started drinking this in the morning:

- 0.5 cup of water
- half a lemon, squeezed
- 1 apple, peeled and diced
- 1/2 a cucumber
- 1 tsp fresh minced ginger
- 2 cups kale
- ice, to chill

Blend til smooth and drink!

Then in the afternoon I was drinking:
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 banana
- half a tin of peaches (in juice, not syrup), rinsed
- 2 cups of spinach

In the evening:
- 0.5 cup water
- 1/2 banana
- large apple or 1 cup of berries (frozen)
- 2 cups of spinach or kale
- ice cubes to chill

3 days of drinking green smoothies 3x a day and I fought off the cold before ever getting sick.

Regular consumption of green beans has been associated with strengthening of the immune system and they are a good source of energy as well. Steam some up,add a little parm or romano as a topper...yes drink lots of water...forgo your workout for a day or two and let your system focus on resources and reserving energy to kill off the cold that's trying to attack you

Other remedies to stave off a cold are Homemade chicken soup, Vitamin C...try some Chamomile soothes... drink chicken or beef broth and get as much sleep as you can.

As a teacher... wash your hands as often as you can or use a hand sanitizer liberally and get some clorox wipes for your desk or a similiar disinfectant.

If I feel I'm getting sick I buy a bunch of the XXX flavor of Vitamin Water Zero. I don't know if it's just the extra hydration, or the actual vitamins in it, but it seems to help stave off a cold. But, basically I've found anything with Vitamin C, like citrus fruits, broccoli, dark leafy greens, and peppers (both bell and hot) seem to help. Hot peppers also help clear the sinuses heh

Get plenty of rest.
Exercise only if you feel up to the action.
Eat foods that you feel you can tolerate--soups, crackers, fruit, liquids, etc
Wash or sanitize hands, phone, keyboards, exercise equipment, doorknobs, etc often

hope you are feeling better soon.

I am a teacher and we have a nasty respiratory viral infection with high (101-103) fever going around school. I woke up this morning feeling marginal but still worked out. On the inclines I could really tell my body was not at 100 percent. Knowing my exposure to sick kiddos and the way I am feeling now I was wondering if anyone had tips to lessen the intensity of a cold.

I am drinking more water than normal but was hoping for advice on what to eat. This is the first time I have not felt well since starting my journey in October and would gladly welcome suggestions.
