I have my one cup a day. I'm not to sure if it has any significant effect on my weight loss though.

The stomach-stretching thing is...odd...and doesn't make any sense.

Coffee will not hurt you--in fact, it may even help slightly. I've read some things that indicate that it can help with athletic performance. As long as you are not consuming an extreme amount, don't worry about it.

I also measure my milk (usually soy) so that I know how much I am getting over the course of a day. I count it with breakfast, but really it is dribs and drabs all day. I have some salad dressing containers with ounce markings on them and flip-top lids--they are perfect for this. When the milk is gone, no more coffee for me.

I drink it all the time and it has not hurt my progress. I'm not sure if it is helping but it does not seem to hurt.

Nope, I hadn't heard or read anything like that. Some people with dyspepsia may find that coffee causes discomfort and gas/bloating.... but if you're talking about stretching your stomach, as in causing it to be bigger so that it could hold more food, make you feel hungry... no. Caffeine is a stimulant, it can stimulate your appetite. And a lot of coffee on an empty stomach may make you jittery and feel like you need to eat. Otherwise... it's a beverage. I don't see how a cup of coffee is going to "stretch" your stomach moreso than a cup of water would.

Someone from one of my teams posted that drinking coffee is not good because it causes the stomach to stretch.

Has anyone every heard that? Any proven research?

I have coffee almost every morning- It is in my routine.
BUT I put just Splenda in it-- I use Keurig K-Cups in fun flavors like Butter Toffee and Hazelnut, then add Splenda packets to taste.

That way I have a flavorful, filling coffee drink for little to no calories with my breakfast.

I always drink my coffee after breakfast so I don't fill up on coffee. I allow myself one cup per day and rotate between adding just some cinnamon or about 1 tbsp of creamer. I don't think a couple cups a day will hurt, but watch the additives. Also, watch those coffee shop specialties, they can pack a huge calorie punch.

It seems like reasonable caffeine consumption is not an issue. This is from the National Osteoporosis Foundation:

Caffeine. Coffee, tea and soft drinks (sodas) contain caffeine, which may decrease calcium absorption and contribute to bone loss. Choose these drinks in moderation.

Coffee/tea. Drinking more than three cups of coffee every day may interfere with calcium absorption and cause bone loss.

Yeah - it's up to the person. If someone is a regular breakfast eater, avoiding it in order to save calories is a disaster. They got so hungry they binge later on.

However, I don't eat breakfast - and can't remember the last time I did. If I wake up at 8 at...I do not get hungry, literally, until after 12. If I get up at 7 I don't get hungry until after 11:30. I simply am not hungry. And I do not believe in forcing myself to eat when I am not hungry.

My uncle is the same way - simply not hungry until around noon.

I adore coffee.I could drink it all day long. I've tried to cut back to 1 cup a day and measure my creamer to track calories, sugar, and fat. I also use coffee in my morning protein shake. I don't know if this is an option for you, but here's the recipe.

8 ounces of unsweetened almond milk (I use Almond Breeze - Original Unsweetened)
1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder (I use Body Fortress)
1-2 teaspoons of instant coffee
3-4 ice cubes and blend away!

(This comes to 200 calories.)

I will sometimes use coconut and almond milk with the instant coffee and protein powder..... THAT is good stuff for about 15 more calories. (Almond Breeze Almondmilk Coconutmilk Blend - Unsweetened Original)

I find that coffee is a good way for me to make sure that I am getting my calcium. Double strength coffee mixed with 1/2 a cup of hot skim or 2% milk for a faux latte kind of drink is a great breakfast with a Kind bar andf fruit, or a hard boiled egg and fruit.

I don't use sweetener very often, but I have a bottle of almond syrup and sometimes on the weekend I make a faux latte with that--Such a yummy treat!

Don't worry about two or three cups of coffee a day unless, like everyone else has said, you're adding a lot of cream or sugar. Coffee contains many healthy substances that are good for you, like potassium. IMO, life is too short for bad coffee or - shudders - no coffee.

I don't trust the powdered creamers personally. I have no idea what kind of voodoo is in them.

I also do not like almond milk in my coffee (although I use it otherwise); the flavor is odd to me and it tends to coagulate weirdly sometimes, which I find unpleasant. Soy was always OK when I used to use that. But mileage is going to vary. Right now I use whole milk since my in-laws purchase it for themselves; once they leave and I have no reason to buy dairy milk anymore I have no idea what I'll go back to. Maybe the deli, if it re-opens. :) (My son is allergic to milk, so we just plain don't buy it for ourselves.)

As for nutritionally? I guess it depends on your needs. The half and half will have a lot more calories than the almond milk (or anything else you might use), and more fat, including saturated fat. If you want to reduce any of those things for any reason, you might consider switching to something else. If not, go ahead and keep the half and half, if you enjoy it.

I agree with all above about the additions. But also that being said, if you want to have coffee and don't want it black, making it at home with whatever "additions" you want in moderation still works out better than ordering from a coffee shop, depending on what you would order! I'm quite happy with myself today that I've managed to get my coffee down to 35 calories for something that has some sweetness (I've got a big sweet tooth, can't go completely black) versus the minimum 150 for something that would taste comparable from a coffee shop. AND I save money by making it at home! But I'm also not a huge coffee drinker, only 1-2 cups/day so I can afford to spare those calories for the only caloric beverage I tend to have in a day (water the rest of the day).

I do measure out my cream and sugar. And I use real cream and sugar.

One tablespoon of half and half in the morning and one teaspoon of sugar, in my coffee. And then my second cup of coffee I use 1% milk and one teaspoon of sugar.

If I drink any more warm beverages it is tea with milk and sugar.

If you are drinking those fancy coffee drinks or using a quarter cup of half and half and a tablespoon of sugar. That will inhibit your weight loss.

warm beverages do help you figure out if you are really hungry or if it's just deydration.

If you like cream and sugar, get the fat free or sugar free creamers and use Splenda or something like that. That's what I do. I drink 1-2 cups a day and the rate of my weight loss hasn't been affected.

When I initially started this weight loss project, I did switch from coffee to tea - for two reasons. One, tea I could enjoy with just a little milk, or even black. Coffee required cream and sugar. When i realized it was like 30-50 calories per cup, and i was drinking 4 or 5 cups... well! I wanted that 200 calories for FOOD. So I switched. Second reason, I have over the years developed a lot of "associations" with coffee that aren't very helpful... coffee and donut, coffee and cookie, coffee and danish, coffee and muffin, coffee and a rich dessert... drinking coffee sort of instantly set me to glancing around of the "and" item! So switching from coffee reduced the amount of "triggers by association" that I had to deal with on any given day.

I did reintroduce coffee after awhile, and it's fine now. I can enjoy it with a little milk, no sugar.. and without the cravings for a sweet item to accompany it. But I'm glad I shook up my routine for awhile at the beginning - it really did help me strike out into developing some new habits that have been very helpful in getting me on track and keeping me there.

-- That's subjective. I do much better skipping breakfast and consume less calories during the day that way. It's never put a damper on my weight loss. Other people find skipping breakfast causes them to binge later in the day.

I have read in several articles pertaining to weight loss that coffee in the morning can make you feel full, which can inhibit people from eating a proper breakfast or no breakfast at all. After experiencing this myself, I try to limit my coffee intake before I eat. Not eating breakfast, of course, is not a good thing, especially when trying to loose weight.
Coffee does act as a a very mild diuretic and can stimulate the bowel, but I am not sure that it has a direct effect on metabolism. There are no definitive studies to prove that it has an effect on weight loss. And yes, adding sugar/creamer/milk can definitely add some calories to your might be surprised by how many calories and fat grams are in a tablespoon of creamer...yikes!

the effect depends on what you're adding to your coffee but as long as you count the calories and they fit within your range, it should have no effect.

Similar to Albertjon, I've found that warm beverages (in my case, tea) fight cravings and help you stave off those feelings of thirst we often mistake for hunger. Now, I keep a cup of tea on pretty much all the time, and when I'm feeling snacky, I grab tea instead. Gives me the sweet I want (I'm a southern girl, but I use Stevia) and the warmth makes my belly feel full.

What it DOES NOT do is mask true hunger pangs; so when I'm hungry, a cup of tea will not do. :)

FIRSTLADYJ1: For me, personally, when I first started losing weight and found myself tempted to munch or snack on something even though I had reach my calorie allotment, I found that drinking coffee helped curb the desire to eat more. Some people have found this to be true for them, but others have not. I am not advocating that a person drink coffee to try to curb appetite. In my case, drinking coffee aided me in my initial weight loss.

coffee has little to no effect on weightloss. the only way it would make an impact would be if you were adding creamer, sugar or milk to you coffee but not actually counting the calories in those items.

If anything... caffeine speeds up your metabolic rate (causes you to burn more calories). However, your body adapts quickly to the caffeine and it does not have this same effect after awhile. So for regular coffee drinkers the effects on weight loss are neutral.

The only way it *may* slow weight loss is if you use a lot of creamer and/or sugar because it will add more calories to your day.
