I was awakened at 2:30am this morning with one going down the side of my leg. It was so painful, it pulled my leg sideways. I got up and found the Apple Cider Vinegar mixed a Tbsp of it with H20, held my nose and gulped it down. Cramp immediately stopped. Still unable to go back to sleep I lay there thinking about when my cramps seem to have returned and gotten worse. I realized it was when I started losing weight and when I gave up drinking excessive amounts of coffee. Could it be a potassium shortage? I am on a BP med and I know I don't get enough potassium based on my SP nutrition reports. I am going to really work hard to increase my intake of potassium rich foods until my next dr appointment which is coming up soon. In the meantime I will also look for the Cramp 911 suggested by 1Jollypolly.

There is a product called CRAMP 911 - it's a little roll on, kinda like the lipgloss in the 80's. Roll it on and within 20 seconds the cramp is GONE. I had my achilles reconstructed two years ago and suffered until I saw it on sale and decided to try as there is nothing worse than being woke from a sound sleep with a cramp from your toes to behind your knee! AMAZING. Kinda expensive, $12 for a small roll on. Locally, I can only find it at Walmart by the BenGay.

I keep a few small bottles of diet tonic water in the house, and only consume it when I have severe cramps. Every once in a great while, one of my hamstrings will seize up and tonic water is the only thing that works quick and completely. Thanks for the link on the health concerns; I suspected there might be issues.

Haven't heard to try tonic water. You know it has quinine in it, I keep it in the house for DH, he drinks it when he a cold or sinus issue. I may try it as the vinegar is pretty bad tasting. I have to hold my nose to swallow it but it trully does work.

Painful, indeed!!! My calf often feels bruised the next day after one occurs. Quickest relief, stand as quickly as possible on a cool floor(ex: tile of bathroom). Someone once told my husband to keep a bar of soap by the bed; then, if one should occur upon waking rub the area w/the bar...By golly, he did and he said it relieved the pain right away(go figure).

As for the cause, most are caused from dehydration or potassium def. Any reason, they are painful...
PS: I've always called them Charlie Horses

A painful subject for sure. I've had feet and leg cramps most of my life. My father suffered from them also. The doctor back then (1960's) gave him calcium supplements. I had them so bad when I was pregnant with my 1st son that I used to pray God would teach me to sleep walk. I had given up wearing anything with a heel over 1/2" several years ago and seemed to have less but since I've lost over 30 lbs; they're back. A friend told me she keeps vinegar in the refrig and takes a dose of it when hers start. I was not a beleiver until recently when they got so bad again that I was desperate enough to try it. OMG! the cramp stopped almost immediately. Did some research and found apple cider vinegar cut with H20 1:1 is the appropriate dose. It works! BTW, I eat a banana almost every day for breakfast, I take calcium supps (family hx of osteoporsis) I exercise and walk regularly, enjoy yoga, none of this seems to help. The vinegar does.

oh, those things hurt!!!

Best of luck getting rid of them! I wake up in the middle of the night with them sometimes and the only thing that helps is for me to rub them out.

My grandmother told me to drink tonic water every day, but I don't know how much truth there is in that

I have had the same problems with my calves as well. I now take a multi vitamin, drink plenty of water, stay away from alcohol and do alot of stretching. It seems the only difference is the stretching and also making sure you massage the calf thoroughly after it occurs.

Used to get them all the time when I was a competitive swimmer. I found proper warmups and stretching to be the best way to avoid/alleviate them.

My Grandma raves on taking calcium supplements and eating a banana every morning (for potassium, which aides muscle cramps) and says it took her muscle cramps away. I hear that many doctors advice this.

Also, as soon as you feel the onset of a cramp, stop, and slowly slowly stretch the muscle. I do this each time I feel a side cramp coming on, and it goes completely away for the rest of my workout EVERY TIME.

Oh man, those are the worst. I usually get them while sleeping, and I'll wake up with this awful pain in my calf. The last one a few weeks ago was so bad that my calf was really sore for the next day. They just seem so bizarre.

Oh those are the worst! I got one when I was at swim practice once! Thought I was gonna drown lol, hope you can figure out what's causing them, they can be caused by hormonal imbalances, stretching too much, or some diseases... so you may want to see a doc.

I drink about a gallon of water a day... (my usuall amount) The coffee is only two small coffee cups and I really don't even finish the second cup..

But I will try leaving that out to see if that helps.. thanks for the suggestion!

Is it possible that you've replaced some of the water you were drinking with coffee? If you just started drinking coffee, I'd try stopping for a few weeks to see if they go away.

Jen, No, the work outs I stick to zumba and I do a lot of hiking and a lot more walking is all, the diet has changed to cleaner foods and less processed foods is all, added way more fruits and less bread..
I did start to drink coffee the last few weeks but I did not think that would be the cause of it..

Summer: I have always called them charlie horses, they are just huge pains in the calf or thighs and they get soo tight it takes a lot of stretching just to get rid of it.. and its very sharp... I usually get these pains at night or before I wake up and stretch..

I have never heard of a Charlie Horse! Do you mean you are getting cramp in your muscles? If so, can you please tell me why you call it Charlie Horse?

Hi Julie

Has anything recently changed about your routine that might be causing the problem? Did you increase the intensity of your workouts, change anything about your diet, etc.?

Lately I have been getting tons of Charlie Horses... I am not sure if its over exertion of working out, but I do drink enough water (1 gallon a day), I do have enough vitamins, and potassium in my diet..

I am just not sure, but boy these suckers hurt... the only way I can relieve it is if I stick my legs straight out and flex my feet back towards my knees and spread my toes, or actually get up out of bed and stretch on my tip-pie toes and do calf raises..

But, during the day its so sore, but it feels great after working out. My calf and legs are tight, firm and in shape.

What ways do you get rid of them or you know what causes yours?
