It has taken me a long time to develop a better relationship with food (been on sp for a year and did my own stuff before that). The mental change I had to make was: it's not about controlling what you eat or letting your diet control you. It's about respecting your body and keeping it healthy. Every time we binge (I say "we" because we all still have slip-ups), we are treating ourselves badly just for a quick fix. It feels good in the short term. Maybe we view it as a reward, or as something we "deserve" because we've had a bad day. I literally ask myself, out-loud, the question, "why am I doing this?" and I literally answer myself out-loud. Most of the time, the answer is just a crappy excuse to rationalize my unhealthy behavior, and when I hear my excuse out-loud, I'm better able to see what I'm doing and do something better.

Thank you both for your support! I really needed to hear your words. They definitely helped to lift my chin and keep on this journey. The advice to set even smaller daily and weekly goals makes a lot of sense to me. I know I expected to much from myself and I need to appreciate that I won't change overnight.

Welcome to Spark People ! I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. that's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time. thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body. NO ONE ever became a healthy eater overnight. it's impossible.
That's why Spark People encourages its members to start with simple changes first. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Set simple goals. Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings ofr fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. If you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved these goals. then you set new ones.
And that's how good health starts. One small change CAN change your life ! But you must be patient with yourself and your body. You didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight. You will see many UPS and downs on that scale as you lose. Those kinds of fluctuations are perfectly normal. So, don't assume that something must be wrong because the scale isn't moving as fast as you'd like.
Weight loss is a slow steady process that takes time.
I too have times when I start eating and, even though I CAN stop, I choose not to. I know when I am doing it that it is the wrong choice. I think I have been on the weight loss rollercoaster for so long that I consider it natural to go through these times. The thing is that the longer I am on SP, the more right choices I make....even when I know I have eaten something I shouldn't have, I now put it behind me and begin making right choices. I think it is critical to remain positive and to keep at it even when you have had a particularly discouraging binge experience. If you can pinpoint the time when you began to binge and the uncover the reasons, you are ahead of the game. You might have emotional issues that you need to deal with to overcome the urge to binge. Hang in there....this is a journey to a healthier lifestyle that you can sustain over the course of your life and not a momentary diet.

I've been so eating so well since I signed up on sparkpeople a week and a half ago. I had already lost 3 pounds and was feeling much better about myself and my lifestyle/weight loss journey. I should mention I usually eat healthy but have been a binge eater for about a year and a half and have packed on 20 pounds doing this. I know most of it is emotionally motivated but, I have figured out other outlets but, there are moments I just can't control my actions and I ended up bingeing. I eat solid meals and some snacks through out the day and my binges typically happen in the evenings.
I stepped on the scale this morning I am exactly back to where I started last week. How do I get over this? Undo the "damage"? And how do I really stop from bingeing again? Please help!
