Hi Nicole! I purchased my shine this weekend at best buy and so far I really like it. It's similar to the fuelband in that it gives you points. What's different is that it also gives you data on step and calories in addition. So, while I'm not a big fan of an arbitrary points value, it does both. I decided to put dollar into this device despite it being new to the market because I liked that it didn't need to be recharged, and that I didn't have to plug it into my phone. The fitbit flex and the jawbone up both have a cap that I would probably lose. So far so good except for a little bit of a learning curve. I also love that it's elegant and not as obvious as fitbit or jawbone on my wrist. I'd love to see you guys partner with this company and they would probably be very receptive to doing so considering they are a start up and partnering with you would give them a TON of exposure.

Wow. That is seriously cool. And just an easily replaceable battery. Since it's going to be open source, there should be plenty of apps coming out for it. I'm biting the bullet and pre-ordering a black one... I'll be the guinea-pig for my family - my mom would love one of these and has an iPad, so I'm sure it'll work with that too (same touch screen tech, so the synching should work), but I'll wait for it to be tested before buying for everyone.

I think I might have my Christmas gifts planned for next year!

It's cool looking, but I don't have a smart phone to read the data, and I like to check mine a lot through the day. Still I think it shouldn't be too hard to enter the data from your tracker. It's neat that it's intended for swimming. I would encourage anyone who is excited about a fitness and calorie tracker to get one because they are amazingly motivational. Even with fitbit syncing to sparkpeople it took me a couple of weeks to figure out what to do with the data. But I feel great now, I'm eating enough so that I have a lot of energy, and I'm sure to make my goal for the year.

Thanks Dave! I am really hoping that Fitbit does find a fix to the Windows 8 issue. The Fitbit is an excellent device and with the free website it works very well for motivation and mindfulness.

Have a great day everyone!

The shine looks really interesting. I like how it goes on your wrist. I don't care much for putting things on my waistband. Hopefully it lives up to the promises. Competition is always good.

Regarding windows 8 and the fitbit, my fitbit one works fine. Maybe you can try installing the software in windows 7 compatibility mode. Or maybe you can convince them to upgrade your ultra to a one.

The Shine really looks great! I love my Fitbit Ultra except it isn't compatible with Windows 8 so far. I have lost stats for 2 weeks now trying to work through a solution as Fitbit doesn't have live chat or phone help, only email. They are very nice, but don't get back to you right away and don't have all the info they need to make a fix happen. Disappointing!

The Shine looks like a great alternative, but I really need more info which I have researched and it hasn't been released yet.

That is...
What is the software like?
Will they charge a subscription fee like BodyMedia Fit or will it be free like Fitbit?

Having a tracker is so motivating for me and keeps me challenging myself! Hopefully Fitbit will work out this issue. Otherwise, Shine, here I come!

Best to all, Cathy

So there is no exclusivity deal? Good. That makes the Shine a bit more attractive to me, since it opens the option of future SparkPeople tracking if the device turns out to be worth the hype.

Thanks for your response, Nicole.

I really appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of it before! Fitbit is not an exclusive partner, and we are always looking for great new companies to partner with. It appears that this device isn't on the market quite yet, but I will be keeping my eyes and ears open.

I am going to attend a super cool "Fitness Tech" conference about all sorts of gadgets like these in early January. I will look for it there!

Yeah, this is the first Fitbit competitor to catch my eye too. Part of me wants to see how this one shakes out, and part of me wants to be an early adaptor and order one now.

It says that it will be having an open platform, allowing anyone to create an app for it. If Spark People would be willing to create an app to sync with their fitness tracker, that would be enough to push me over to pre-ordering.

Wow, this does look interesting. I am happy with my fitbit Ultra, but will have to keep an eye out for reviews when it becomes available. This is actually the first fitbit competitor that caught my interest after reading about it. The Jawbone Up and Nike Fuel didn't because I don't see that a movement based tracker worn on the wrist would be as accurate as one worn on the torso for many daily activities. From reviews I read there seems to be some truth in what I suspect, i.e. people pushing shopping carts or strollers not getting credit for any steps or very few. So with this one, you might want to consider that and play around with that in the placement--it might work well to have it on the wrist for swimming and on the torso for walking, for example. I like the look of it, that it is so small and waterproof. I'll be really interested in learning more about it after people have tried the prototypes. Thanks!

Hey Fitness Coaches (especially those who post on the Daily Spark Blog):

I was wondering if you have seen all the buzz on geek media the past few days on the upcoming Shine fitness tracker:

I would love to see your take on this new gadget. I have been torn between pre-ordering this or going for a Fitbit Ultra for my Christmas wishlist. I love that the Fitbit syncs with SparkPeople and that it is available NOW. On the other hand, I love that the Shine tracks cycling (my number one fitness activity as my bike is my year-round transportation) and swimming.

I don't know which one I want! emoticon

I am also curious whether your deal with Fitbit for syncing with SparkPeople is exclusive. Are you guys open to syncing with other trackers?

Thanks for your time on this.
