Try to get a feel of what your neighbor's schedule is like or simply reach out to them. Chances are they will be understanding. Honestly, I wouldn't make much of fuss about it until it actually becomes a problem (i.e. they complain) which then you can probably work something out. I think it becomes a nuisance when you're doing it for several hours a day, dropping heavy weights that sound like it may fall through the floor or on off hours when people are normally sleeping. I think if you stick with a schedule during the daytime or early evening hours, you should be fine.
I currently live above someone and I do high impact exercises at home and so far no complaints. You also have to realize that people who live below someone know they are going to deal with some kind of noise regardless. Even cleaning your apt for an hour is going to make a lot of noise with moving furniture and what not! So should you not clean your place because you don't want to make noise that may bother your neighbor?? I would think not! You shouldn't have to tip toe around just to please a neighbor. There's a difference between normal and excessive. Just hope you have a pleasant neighbor!
Also, one exercise you can do is go up and down the stairs for 20-30mins.

I hope I wasn't too critical! I did not mean to (but can sometimes seem too blunt - English is not my native tongue and even if I am quite good in it, nuances are often difficult to get right).

Besides all the other suggestions, how about the old-but-still good step routines. You will need a step and some videos (at first; once you know some of the steps you can design your own routine), but it's not as high impact as running, jumping, etc. and probably won't disturb your neighbor as much.

Step can be higher impact, of course, but doesn't have to be. I also think it would be great to talk to your neighbor(s) and see if there is a time of day that wouldn't disturb them.

Has anyone mentioned pilates or yoga? Some can have a cardio component.

Go downstairs. Introduce yourself to your new neighbors. Explain what you want to do, and ask then when would be the best time to do it to minimize the impact on their lives. Living in an apartment means living with the sounds of neighbors. If you introduce yourself, talk to them, they're unlikely to say that there's no way you can move at all, ever, 24/7.

Also, get a stroller. Go for walks. Get a pack and play, and take the baby out with you. :) You aren't in a prison!

Low impact walking videos, yoga, pilates, and the body weight resistance training could all be good. Plus, when the weather is nice, take your son out in his stroller and go for walks, even if it is just around your complex for 20 or 30 minutes. I bet he will like it. My daughter asks to go for walks all the time now, even though she just rides along!

That's thoughtful of you to be considerate of your neighbor below you. I'm sure in time you'll get a picture of their schedule and hopefully you can do noisier exercises when they're not at home.

The other suggestions are great: lunges, squats, planks, and other bodyweight exercises. Through in resistance bands, medicine balls, handheld weights and you can do pretty much everything. Then if you're still wanting higher impact, you can take your son to a park or a friend's house several days a week to get some more cardio in.

Oh one more that does not make much noise but uses big leg/butt muscle groups: step ups! You can use a sturdy chair or bench or ottoman and maybe add some weights too. You can step up so the the chair is infront of you or at your side, both work different muscles.

EDITED TO ADD: Kettlebell swings! No noise and full body workout! If you don't have kettlebell, you can use regular dumbbell or packbag with books or your baby even ;)

You know, that would be a neighbour from hell who would complain about say 10-15 minutes of jumping if you do that in decent time (not during the late evening or night, nor very early mornings). I would continue exercising like I had before, paying attention to the time and maybe not do jump exercises every single day. Ofcourse I don't know what your routine is currently. IF your neighbours do complain just tell her/him that you are exercising and you are allowed to live in your apartment and living always makes some noise.

I also can't quite see why you couldn't do jumping exercises outside with your little one: in a park for example. But ofcourse you know the house, area and what is acceptable and possible in where you live better than I do.

I love squats and walking lunges - and all lunge variations really! Both are silent exercises and use the big muscle groups. Pushups, mountain climbers (latter might make some noise)... I also love biking (outside), you could have your child in a seat with you (I don't know what those seats are called in English that are attached to the bike for a child to sit on).

There are tons of great workouts for free all over the internet, maybe browse some of them and mix and match the kind of exercises that suit your situation the best.

Strength train using your own body weight... Do the modified (and thus easier) version of the push-ups, planks, squats etc. If you do them quickly enough without any rest between the sets (e.g. one set of push-ups and then one set of squats and then one set planks, and so on), you can get some cardio benefits too. This kind of workout will rev up the metabolism and so it is great for losing fat.

I move into a new apartment this weekend. I will ve on the 3rd floor which means no high impact exercises like jumping jacks or jump rope. I can't always go outside either bc I will have 1 year old with me and there is no safe place for him downstairs. Any thoughts on moves I can do to get similar benefits?
