Take a deep breathe. you did NOT gain five pounds of fat in a week. In order to truly gain five pounds of fat, you'd have to have eaten an extra 17,500 calories ON TOP of your normal intake this week. one pound of fat = 3,500 calories. So, if you know you didn't eat that much extra food, then you know you didn't gain fat.

Why did you gain weight ? You're retaining water. Water has weight and I can prove it. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning after going to the bathroom. Then, drink 3-4 glasses of water. get back on the scale. did you gain weight ? YES ! Did you gain fat ? NO !

Water has weight and when you retain water, that causes the scale to go up. Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to gain weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope, it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days. This too shall pass.

Shoot, I can easily gain or loss 3-4 pounds in a day. During my period, I can gain 5-7 pounds ! Fat gain ? Nope, water weight.

Don't worry, you're normal.

Hi Ohio,

Our weight is not a static number, but more like a vital sign. Just like your blood pressure, heart rate and body temp will vary throughout the day, same is true with your weight. Because our bodies are largely made up of water (the fitter we are the more water we retain), any deviation in our diet, hydration, workouts, even hormones can lead to a shift on the scale.

It isn't uncommon to see a slight upward shift in weight when we start exercising, or add a new training regimen and eating better. For one the muscles are making more mitochondria which allow for extra glycogen-stored glucose in the cells- therefore, your body hangs on to more water to help with the cooling off process for exercise and for helping process energy. Your muscles will also have an increase in blood volume in order to have better availability to oxygen and removing waste, especially lactic acid. These things coupled with eating higher fiber foods, such as fruits and veggies can show a gain, when in all reality it is just a shift in fluids.

Ohio girl: you have to keep it in mind that you did NOT gain 5 pounds this week. You simply weighed 5 pounds more than last time. To GAIN five pounds you will have had to have eaten 17,500 calories MORE than you burned. Really, 17,500 calories over your BMR. Did you do that? Probably not.

Why did you weigh 5 pounds more? Any of the following: you ate recently; you were at a heavy point in your monthly cycle and were retaining water; you hadn't gone to the bathroom in a while; your clothes were heavier; it was a different time of the day; etc.

Which is more likely: You ate 17,500 calories more than you burned OR you just had more food and water inside you from time of day or time of month?

I've had success following the Nutrition & Fitness trackers on this site. If I get stuck it's easy to see why, it's due mostly to inactivity for me. Just remember this is a way to live healthy, not a fad or a diet. Good luck! Pat

Gave one of those "mini meal" plans I saw in a magazine a try hopeing to lose . It sounded ok, eat several small meals during the day to keep hunger in control......I GAINED 5 lbs following the plan exactly! OK, NO more Fads or magazine diets for me!
