Try listening to music and/or planning different routes. Taking the same route all the time can get boring. Try doing a scenic route.. If you enjoy taking pictures, maybe even stop to take a picture of something pretty along the way.

I found that in planning my route, I didn't mind walking alone so much. I don't always listen to music but we have so many nice bike/walk pathways through greenspace around my work & home that I have lots of scenery to look at.

There's some nice historical neighbourhoods too and I'd like to take the bus there and just wander around admiring the architecture. Then bus home after.

I'm with all the people who mentioned audio books. Sometimes I can't wait to get home, leash my dogs and go for a very long walk.

You could also look into volunteering at a local animal shelter and walk the dogs. Good for you, good for them emoticon

I am an outside walker and sometimes it is boring!

I am not a computer, iphone savy person so my friend made me a walking mix of my favorite music and stand up of my favorite is brilliant!! Listening to George Lopez and Chris Rock I could walk for so long, yes looking like a laughing, smiling idiot but enjoying every minute.

I used to run or walk with music, but more and more, enjoy the quiet time to think through things like problems at work, what we're having for dinner, or what color I want to paint the bathroom. I solve a lot of problems and get a lot of good ideas while I'm eating up miles of pavement!

I offer to walk my friend's dogs for them... they love having a day off and I love the companion!

Walking at the county parks is also great. Big trees, nature, animals... this is very meditative time for me.

When I just go for a quick walk in the neighborhood, my iPod is my best friend. I try to keep a playlist of short, high-energy songs. It's amazing how quickly the time passes!

I actually prefer to walk by myself. I can go wherever I choose, at whatever pace I choose.

I find walking less boring if I'm actually going somewhere. If time allows, walk somewhere that you'd ordinarily go by car.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon Me too!!! I second that....BUT, I put off walking alone after my walking buddy-Rex, passed away in 2009 emoticon emoticon I miss him so much and he stopped walking 3 yrs. before that with bad back hips. I just decided this month with our really mild winter, to get out there anyway and get moving again emoticon emoticon emoticon I've now lost 28 lbs. and want to get off another 30 lbs. for the summer. Ten lbs. a month or so. Keep moving anyway and try some of these great ideas. I'm getting used to smelling the air and taking in the beauty of the day and the wind behind my back gently(sometimes blustery) pushing me forward and keeping me cooled. ENJOY the process! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I second the books on "tape". And if you only let yourself listen while walking, you'll want to walk longer and more often because you'll want to know what happens next in the book!

Some libraries have books you can download onto your ipod or mp3 player.

I preferred working alone, and I am relearnig to work and purchased a smartphone, so that I can have the music to accompany me.

Two words: Radio Lab

This free podcast from NPR is really, really interesting, and I get wrapped up in them easily. It's not unusual for me to listen with a grin, laugh out loud, and forget I'm walking!

Some great ideas in this thread already.

Also, choosing pleasant surroundings can help. Try walking in a park, or along a river bank, etc.

I've really gotten into books on cd or mp3 or music, of course. Just be careful not to zone out too much.. gotta stay in tune with what's around you :)

A ipod or mp3 player- put on a funny show or some good music.. I have a pedometer I record my steps daily with and challenge myself to do some many steps daily and monthly..

I used to want company but when I found out how fit I got- I realized no one can keep up with me.. I am doing this journey for my body.. If I want results I gotta change my attitude to make sure I get the desired outcome..

With long haul dedication- I am..

I do most of my exercise alone, I find it nice to get some time by myself to just think and relax. If you're more social, maybe find a friend or coworker or someone to go for walks with.

I do 90% of my runs solo. I do listen to music, but I am amazed how much thinking I do during that time. It really has become my time to chill.

I wish you well!
