I'm a big steak and potato person on a 1200 calorie plan. My family raises the beef so that's what I eat. Most important is to get lean and cut off all fat you can.

I've been surprise that I can still eat it when I want to and lose weight. You just have to be sure to weigh it out and plan for it. I still eat potatos for some carbs, but they are much smaller portions, weighed and entered into tracker before I fix (they are very misleading on weight). I dress them up more now with green onions .

My version of steak au poive:

I have switched from ny strips to petite sirloins. I like my steak med rare so I look for thicker cuts. The petite sirloin is very low in fat. Here's how my husband likes it:
Take the steak out of the fridge at least 1/2 an hour before you plan to cook it, salt both sides and generously pepper it with cracked peppercorns. To cook.... Heat a frying pan on high heat (I use a cast iron pan) heat 2 tsp of butter in the pan when the butter is just about to smoke and it has turned brown put your steaks in. Do not overcrowd the pan and do not move the meat around. This will sear the steak and give it a wonderful crust. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side, take out the steak and set aside. Turn off the heat and let the pan cool down a little but not totally. Add a 1/4 cup of cognac, turn the stove back on low to med heat. Add a tsp of whole peppercorns, 1 tbs of store bought Demi glaze( in a pinch I will add 2tbs of beef stock and another tsp of butter but the Demi glaze is really key) add a pinch of salt. Let this all reduce and thicken then finish the sauce with 4 tbs of half and half. Reduce and continously stir with a whisk for a few minutes until sauce has slightly thickened. Pour in any juice that has been released from the resting meat and stir. Spoon sauce over steaks and serve. Recipe makes 2 servings
This is such a satisfying and decadent recipe that is not too bad calories and fat wise.
Estimated calories= 340 for a four ounce steak estimated fat= 16 grams
I usually serve this with a "salad" of roasted herbed potatoes tossed with arugula and drizzled with a balsamic glaze.(150calories) 3/4 potatoes and 1 1/2 cups of arugula tossed together with a tsp of oilive oil (or sprayed with the misto) plate and drizzle the balsamic glaze on top. It's a beautiful presentation and the whole meal is under 500 calories!

I like thin sliced, lean steak pieces in stir fry, especially with mushrooms, onions and snow peas.

Even low fat gratin potatoes (
-low-fat-206594) would easily fit in your plan, don't know why I didn't think of that! Or rosemary yam/garlic mashed potatoes (

Thank you!

I had completely forgot about the existence of mushrooms, I should definitively add them to my diet :)
I'm not big about broccoli tbh, but I'll try to cook em like you said, you never know.

"Mmmm, steak" is often heard in our house. We've done a few things to make steak-eating more possible while adhering to my diet goals (when the cook gets healthy, we ALL get healthy). I've replaced at least some of our normal beef with alternative red meats -- try Buffalo and Elk, for example. Lower fat and overall healthier...or try other game meats.

As for carbs with the meat, a cup of broccoli only has approximately 6 grams of carbs. I like to do ours roasted with a drizzle of olive oil, some smashed garlic, and a light topping of parmesan cheese (which crusts to a lovely nutty, flavorful addition). 84 g of white button mushrooms (about 5 medium) has only 3 grams of carbs, pan sauteed with a little oil, these can be made into a healthy side of the traditional sauteed mushrooms. Spinach runs about 1 gram of carbs per cup full. Drizzle with chicken stock, wilt in a hot pan, and serve with some fresh herbs or a small amount of butter. Even boiled potatoes are only 6 grams of carb for an ounce...any of these options would work (or all of them).

Hello Guys and Gals,

I'm a steak lover on a diet. Can any of you guys direct me to or recommend me a few recipes with which I can continue eating steak on a regular basis?

Atm, my schedule only allows me to cook for myself on dinners. This means that my diet before dinner looks like this:
Breakfast: 300-350 calories
Snacks: 200-300 calories
Lunch: 400-450 calories

My diet goal is 1500-1800.

This, in essence, means that my steak dinner needs to be around 400-700 carbs total.

The meat alone gives me around 400 carbs, so I've got 300 extra for the rest.
Oh and my diet is generally too low on carbs as it is, so adding carbs on the dinner would help a lot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
