This is a tough one. I don't know where you live, but in california they have a long drawn out way to help parents diagnose and place their child. It is up to the parent to talk with and innitiate any actions that the schools can help them with.

The other problem is that at that age there can be many issues, including just an over active child. So one needs to take these steps carefully in order not to mistakenly label a healthy child with a disability.

As a substitute teacher I have seen many children and some I "think" may need some kind of extra attention. But I also see many that just need a firm swat on the bum and a firm talking to by their parent. So keep an eye on your son and ask his teacher for some info that may help you find the right path to take. My prayers are with you guys.

The doctor says our son needs meds and therapy. My husband just thinks he needs to grow up.

What does his doctor say? Is your husband ignoring the advice of a doctor?

I will start with a little background info first. My husband is a Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard and we move about every 3 years. We have two boys 15 & 6. My oldest son has ADD & PDD and my youngest son has been diagnosed with ADHD & ODD. My oldest has been on meds for years and is doing wonderful, but my youngest isn't on meds due to his fathers refusal to see he has problems. Our 6 year old is my husbands biological son and to him he is perfect. Even though our youngest has been getting in trouble at schools since pre-school. Now he is in first grade and has been having a real difficult time at school. I have had to pick him up numerous times because of his behavior. I just wish my husband would see that this is hurting our child and that he need meds to help him control his impulses. I just want my son to be happy and make friends. Any advice would be wonderful.
