I lost 2.6 lbs. the first day, so I think it is normal. You probably kicked in your metabolism. That loss should taper off to 1-2 lbs. per week. I haven't made any of the recipes yet, as my lifestyle is too busy to cook. But, when I retire in 7 or 8 years I will be doing baking, cooking, and yes eating lots more of the delicious looking vegan recipes.

One of the fringe benefits to eating healthier is that for a lot of people, it also leads to a lower sodium intake. And less salt = less retained water.

And because of this, a lot of people see a large drop in the scale in the initial weeks.

It's extremely unlikely that you lost that much fat in just one week. But it is a positive sign that you are living healthier, and worth celebrating on those grounds alone.

emoticon I lost 9 lbs in my first week also. Then, it slowed down to about 1 - 2 lbs per week. Subtle changes to your routine (food and exercise) will make the weight vary from week to week. You have a great jump start, great motivation, and keep on going!

That's great, but don't expect that to continue.

Obviously your body is responding very well to what you are doing. Just keep in mind that the loss may slow down over time and don't loose heart. Just keep on keeping on and you will be amazed at what you have achieved over a period of time. It has nothing to do with luck or motivation. It is purely just showing up and Doing the steps as required to achieve your goal.

It is not normal, but not something to worry about unless you are doing something unhealthy to get that result, or you keep that pace. I lost 10 pounds this last week, but I will not be keeping that up, nor was I doing anything unhealthy, I became my moms unofficial on call nurse after a knee replacement, this means my usual hour(ish) of working out turned into 6-10 hours of lifting, etc to help her get around.

Keep an eye on what you are doing and what you are losing, if you keep losing at your current rate I would check with a doctor (on biggest loser they lose lots every week, but have health professionals keeping an eye on them).

And now for some shiny emoticons

I think its great that your initial week 1 weight loss is keeping you motivated & spurring you on to continue, that's great! People will lose weight at different rates, depending on how tall they are (how much weight they have to lose), their muscle mass, gender, age, etc. So I can't say for sure 9 lbs/week is normal. In general, 1% of your weight lost per week is normal. So if you're 189, 1.89 pounds/week would be "normal". Another "rule" is 1-2 lbs/week of weight loss is normal. The most I've ever lost in a week was 3 lbs, so I know 9 lbs isn't normal for me, but it could be normal for you the first week, because some of that could be water weight & some of it could be fat. Either way, just keep working on your healthy habits & you will get closer and closer to your goal weight. Maybe not at a continued rate of 9lbs/week, but eventually you will get to you goal! emoticon

Hi all. I joined Sparkpeople a little over a week ago. I found recipes on here to make myself and I've been doing cardio and strength training like I'm supposed to. I've been eating in my ranges sometimes over on some things and sometimes under. It's hard for me to eat within all the ranges but I try. Anyway when I started I weighed roughly 189. I weighed myself this morning and I now weigh 180. It's a great pick me up, made me get right off this chair and start on my strength and cardio this morning. I'm usually pretty lazy and eat whatever is in sight but I am determined to lose this weight this time. It caught me off guard that I would lose so much my first week. Is this normal to happen?
