I decided over 18 months ago that I wanted to lose 50 pounds. And you know what, I'm nearly there! I basically used the Spark method by making small, gradual changes over time. The very first thing I did was cut back on sweets. I decided to only have a dessert item once per day. It was so easy to stick to that small change that it felt effortless. Gradually I added more healthy habits and was able to lose 15 pounds on my own.
Eventually I joined Sparkpeople and start tracking my calories and fitness and was able to lose nearly 35 more pounds. My loss has been slow but it has felt natural. It's been a gradual transition from a food-focused, couch-potato lifestyle to a healthy one where I'm getting regular exercise and not obsessing so much about food.
So my advice is to start small. Don't try to change everything overnight. Pick one thing about your eating habits that you want to change and set that as your goal. Tell someone (in real life or here on Spark) about your goal so that you are held accountable. Set up a reward for meeting that goal. Then git-r-done and get REWARDED!
You can do this but you have to take the first step.

Complacency is the worst thing that can happen to a person. Why make a change when things seem so comfortable ? Well, something must be wrong if you're feeling out of sorts. What to do ? If you want to get out of your rut, you're going to have to decide what it is you want to do first. You have to set some priorities. make a list. then you have to decide what you need to go to achieve your first goal. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated.
If your goal is to lose weight, then you have to decide what you need to do to lose the weight and keep it off. If your goal is to get better grades in school, then you're going to have to budget your time to allow for more study or work with a tutor if you need help.
You can't be wishy washy. You've got to make some hard decisions if you want to make a change in your life. However, once you make that decision, you have to be ready to stick to it. I know it's not easy to lose weight and keep it off. So, if you need support, that's why the SP community is here.
So, what do YOU want to do with your life ? What areas do you want to see improvement first ? Because once you start making improvements in one area, that's going to filter over into other parts of your life.

I know what you mean, I've been, and in reality kind of am, in the same place as you are. The key thing is to make small changes. Stock your fridge and freezer with healthier choices. Use peanut oil instead of canola oil, buy skinny cow ice cream sandwitches instead of regular, only buy whole wheat or whole grain anything, substitute darker chocolate for milk for quicker satisfaction, etc. All of these differences mean that even if you do binge on ice cream, you'll only be getting half the calories you would have otherwise, or if you have that pasta, it won't trigger a huge surgar craving in 10 mins. Sprint for your goal, but make sure that if you fall, you have a safety net ;)

Sometimes it's hard to get really going but you have to start with small steps. First thing I did was start eating right, then incorporate excerise. I made spark my home page so its the first thing I see when I turn on my computer. Its frustrating, its tough but it can be done. The process is slow but you have to take on day at a time one pound at a time. I hope this helps a little.

So I've been in a rut for awhile with everything from my weight to school. I really wanna lose this weight this year but I've saying that the past 4 years. How do I make the change and do what it takes to lose it. I know what I have to do I just never do it. Why is that? I feel so discouraged I've gained back the weight I lost. I have my motivation for losing and many reasons. How would you recommend getting back on track and finishing up this year strong?
