I know how you feel.. I went a whole month and did not even lose one pound..as my doctors nurse said.."well at least you did not gain". which is not exactly what you want to hear..when you feel so down.. I know my age, my metabolism, and health issues play apart on how much i will lose.. That's when having a positive attitude and spending time encouraging others is important.. if we keep doing what we know to do.. we will get there...that's the challenge for us I think

I agree with the discouraged. I've lost two pounds and gained it back. However, I keep trying! I'm trying to eat closer to the end of my calorie range though it's hard this week......I'm in Vegas at a conference but I'm skipping desserts, etc. I'm also exercising at least 10 min each day.......the videos are great for that on this sight. So, onward and upward though sticking to things isn't working as well as I had hoped.
I'm there with you on being discouraged. I worked hard for a month and saw no results. I've never committed and not seen results. I was walking every day and somewhat watching what I eat. Now I've pretty much tossed in the towel. I wish I could find an exercise routine that I enjoy. Oh well things change and whining about it won't help. Another day today and I commit to exercise today of some kind.
Thank you all so much for your encouragement. When I have found myself in tough times over the past 2 weeks, I have thought about your posts, and used them as motivation to battle on! Because of this, I have BROKEN this latest plateau, and lost 2 pounds this last week after 2.5 weeks of no loss. But as you suggested, I have definitely been less reliant on the scale to tell me how to feel about my health. Thanks again for getting me through that!

Wow. I think you are doing splendidly, are very proactive and inspiring.
My only idea to add: ramp up the veggie & fruit consumption & ditch the scale for a while and go by the fit of your clothes. Like Nancy said, healthy living never expires.
Think of it this way: you are practicing for maintenence. You're doing great! You've come waaaaay too far to go back now. Stay brave and tough.

As the old song goes,"accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative". Give yourself credit for the POSITIVE things you do for yourself and don't beat yourself up because the scale isn't moving as fast as you'd like.
While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there may be weeks you don't lose. there may even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Put a positive spin on your plateau and think this instead," You haven't gained back any of the weight you've lost so far". That does say you are doing something right.
There is a misconception (and I blame the late night infomercials and the Biggest Loser) for making people believe the weight comes off week after week. It doesn't. Weight loss is not consistent. Some weeks you may lose and some weeks you won't.
The fact is, it's easy to pack on the weight. It's hard to take it off. So, don't beat yourself or think you don't have enough will power. That's not true.
What to do ? Keep plugging along. Remember, this isn't a diet. it's a life style change. the changes you make to your health today, you keep for the rest of your life, not the amount of time it takes to lose the weight. The Biggest Loser glamorizes weight loss. The fact is, weight loss is pretty mundane and boring. Which is why people give up, they get bored.
The key is to keep things interesting by varying your routine. Change your exercise routine occasionally so that you aren't doing the same things over and over. Change your meals too. Eating the same foods can get really boring too.
You don't have to do anything radical to make a change. Try a different veggie now and then. Try a different class at the gym or new DVD workout. The human body thrives on change and challenge. Don't be afraid to try something new once in a while. That's what keeps things interesting.

WOW! super impressed! i would not say you ar in a rut! you have made definite progress. I like to think of plateaus as a time that my body is readjusting to my new life! perhaps it has gone into shock because of all of my new healthy choices and can't believe that i am doing so well!!

I have to say, I am right there with you on this one, I seem to be in exactly the same place as you; I have made massive changes to my lifestyle and done a lot of things differently this time on my way to getting rid of all that excess weight (I don't say "losing" weight, because this time I have no intention of ever finding it again!). My successes have been great as well, over 40lbs lost and had a marked increase in my active lifestyle. However last week I actually gained weight and this week the scale hasn't moved. It's discouraging to say the least, but I HAVE to keep reminding myself that I have gone from a size 18+ to a 14 in 4 months, I'm healthier and more active than ever and for the first time in 10 years, I don't feel like the biggest person when I enter a room anymore. All these successes is what's keeping me plugging along every day, continuing to eat right and make exercise a priority.
I think the main thing to remember is that you are worth the time and effort that you are putting into this, your body might be resisting right now, but eventually it will give in and you will be back on track. What I did this week is to go back and re-examine my eating, pay a little more attention to my portion size and track EVERYTHING...
This lifestyle change isn't easy, and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise, is selling something! I know for me, seeing that someone else is experienceing what I'm experiencing helps me keep going. This isn't a sprint, it's a marathon! You can do it, and so can I!

Wow, what an insightful post and I love that you are not going to give up. Healthy living does not have an expiration date. Even if you were to be 3, 4, 10 pounds less, you are always going to have to be mindful of your eating and you are always going to have to be active. That is what everyone who embraces a healthy lifestyle must do.
One thing I caution you on is your weight loss goals. What looks good mathematically on paper does not always transcribe into the real word. Our weight is so funny--because our bodies are comprised up mostly of water (50-65% depending on your fitness level) any little fluctuation in our diet, hydration, workouts and hormones can look like a gain, when in all reality it is just a shift in fluids.
Just remember those who lose weight slowly, we're talking 5% over a 3 month period have been shown to keep the weight off longer than those who lose at a much faster rate. Hang in there, you are doing FANTASTIC!
Hi all. I'm in a bit of a rut. I have finally hit my first plateau this time. Historically, this is always when I give up... well, in reality, about a week from this first realization that I have gotten past the easier stuff, and am now in slow territory. So I'm worried, since time is a ticking.
This time, I don't want to quit. This time, I'm telling myself I WILL NOT QUIT. My mindset is already very different from the times I've tried to lose the weight in the past, and I'm impressed and incredibly proud at what I've accomplished so far. Nevertheless, I'm discouraged and wondering how long I can keep my healthy habits up if it takes me a while to get past this plateau.
Here are some things I've done differently this time (from the other times I've tried to lose weight):
1. My goal is to lose approximately one pound a week (through January), and half a pound a week after that until reaching my goal weight by the end of May! I have always tried to lose at LEAST 2 pounds a week in the past, set myself up for failure, and consequently failed.
2. I've set non-weight related goals, such as bicycling 35 miles a week, walking a half mile every week for each pound I have lost, etc. And I've set mini-weight goals and little treats and prizes for myself when I reach them. In the past, all I've told myself is "you'll celebrate when you finish" and it's all been about the weight.
3. I have truly taken a bit of time each day to reflect on how far I have come. I've lost 12 pounds since September! That's amazing! And I've lost 16 since the beginning of summer! I've reduced my resting heart rate by about 5 beats per minute! I've gone from an "overweight" BMI to a "healthy" one! I've exercised at least 5 minutes a day since september and I've remembered to take my multi-vitamin every day, too! These are real feats, and I'm really proud of myself, whereas in the past I've just been constantly wanting more... just wanting to cross that finish line and never look back.
Like I've said, I'm really proud to have come this far. But I don't know how I will keep up my current enthusiasm in a few weeks when it's even harder and I subconsciously can't help but feel like I'm "behind" in a race against myself.
One last thing I've changed this time around: I ask for help! I have asked my boyfriend and best friend for support on this journey. I have made my goals known. One of my final "treats" to myself next summer after transitioning to maintenance is to have a professional photo shoot with my boyfriend for our fourth anniversary, and I've even gone so far as to MAKE the appointment to hold myself more accountable to my personal goal to look and feel amazing and proud!
But anyway, that's what I'm doing right now. I'm looking for some support when I know I need it most. When I'd rather sneak inside my turtle shell and hide from my commitment to my goals and to my health, I'm just trying to carry on one step at a time.
Any advice and words of encouragement would be much appreciated!
