Fitness Minutes: (4,700)

the eliptical always tells me less.. so i just dont know.. how can i spend a hour on it and only burn 300 something cal.. im not a turtle on it and i do different resistance and ramp.. so who knows cause i sure dont
Notice that sparkpeople doesn't have you input how hard you worked on the elliptical. Thirty minutes at 50 steps a minute on level 1 will give you an identical burn as thirty minutes at 90 steps per minute on level 15. You know that ain't right!
An HRM is the only way to get a reasonable approximation of accuracy if that it is important to you.
I usually just go with what SP says. In my case, my elliptical reads higher than SP. Usually my elliptical reads 425 for a half hour (I can input my weight, change the height/resistance..I usually pick a low speed and go 145-160 steps per minute...fast). SP says it is only 300 calories. I know that a heart monitor would solve the dispute, but I don't feel like spending the money. I'm only 10-15 lbs from goal weight, and workout for stress relief more than anything. I am in decent shape, so if I am dripping in sweat by the end, it was enough of a workout.
On the other hand, I have a cheap stairclimber and if I do 1 hour at the highest resistance (still super easy), SP says 600+ calories. But I barely break a sweat. So I know it isn't right.
My elliptical does not give the same minute/calories burned ratio as SparkPeople. Which one should I use? For example, tonight I did 36 minutes (the length of my Burlesque soundtrack! lol) and my machine only said 284 calories versus the 324 that SparkPeople says. Should I use my machines reading since it knows I wasn't going a consistent speed (up & down with the music tempo)?? I'd hate to use the SparkPeople totals and cheat myself.
