I guess I am with you. I only notice the ads that interest me. Besides I like the site free!

Ads are everywhere so those on Sparks don't bother me at all. I click on ads that interest me and ignore those that don't. I've never noticed a disturbing ad on Sparks. Sparks is interested in members concerns. Here is a link for those who find ads disturbing.

Actually, I went back to see what ads are being discussed. IMO, I found nada. I see ads at the top of the page under the spark toolbar and then there are ads to the left of the page. I guess I've ignored them because they have never bothered me in the least.

As mentioned, how do you think the site pays for its maintenance. Nothing in life is free...

I've been using noscript with Firefox for several months now and most ads are blocked due to the permissions I have granted for SP. I found out about noscript reading various quality Internet security sites. It allows you to control the running of Javascript objects, and based on the results I have had, it appears many of the ads use Javascript.

If you try it out, you will need to allow SP in order to spin the wheel.

I use Firefox and am UK-based. I don't seem to have the problems that some other people are describing. In general I prefer Firefox to Windows Explorer. It's free to download.

I hope that the folks who are affected most can resolve the problems.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'ignoring'. I haven't noticed any disturbing ads.....
I hope that I haven't been getting viruses.
The only thing that bothers me is that websites like this encourage you to link with Facebook. I have some serious privacy issues with that website. I know that there are links that can give you viruses when you are on Facebook.
I have a Facebook account but I have made sure that I strictly limit its use...and only friends can see what is there.

I, too, like that SP is free, but I think I keep getting viruses because of the adds.
Anyone else having this issue?

I like it being free and let the advertisers pay for it.

I have adblock added onto my FireFox browser so I don't see 99% of the ads unless they are for SparkPeople directly. You might try that.

I find the ads for the "sons and daughters" medical issues a little disconcerting; I wish some of those types of things were not included here, but I appreciate the site being free, so just ignoring them works for me.

I have been having problems with AT&T and yahoo, which is my internet and email provider.. and when my cell contract with AT&T is up I plan to look else where for these services. Maybe Firefox is something I will also look in too.
I have for now just quit Sparkspeople, having deleted my account just dont use their services. If they dont want me to use them because the ads are more important than me, okay, I can live with that, for they do are not so important that I should be living with the problem the ads cause me.
The problem is that the internet as a whole is one big flashing ad, and no one is willing to do anything about it, or even to speak up about it. And it is about the same for about everything in this world most people dont like but just accept as the way it is. How sad a people we have become.

Try Mozilla's FireFox browsing program. I've had better success with that working with the ad blocking programs.

I don't mind them too much - every once in a while I find ones really disturbing, yesterday there was one that just got bigger every time I'd go to click the Message Boards button and block the button, which was annoying.

But using Firefox might help.

There are a couple websites I can ONLY access with Firefox. Don't know what the dealio is with that, but at least it works.

Good point, I hadnt thought about it that way, but I agree it could lead parents to get the kids medicated when they shouldnt be.

In general I support the presence of ads because it keeps sparkpeople free.

However, I really don't like the ad with the bursting ballon. I find it disturbing the way it rips up.

I also find something vaguely offensive about the ad with the little boy dressed up as where the wild things are. It seems to imply that "your child" is a little angel and it's only a condition that makes him misbehave. I think that's a wild dichotomy to make. Kids misbehave all the time, and it's not like there's some little angel inside every kid that comes out if you only give him the right medication. An irresponsible ad to show to people whose kids have not been formally diagnosed, at any rate.

I guess my pop-up blocker is taking care of most ads, but there's one that always makes me giggle, "Friends don't let friends sweat in their bras".
I like crow-barring that one into casual conversations =P

Thanks, everyone, for sharing about the ads. I have not seen those really bad ones. Some are objectionable (like the political ones earlier this month), but I had not had a strong reaction to anything. However, I salute you who shared because I learned something and, I hope, it will allow me to be more compassionate!

The older I get, the more I am reminded that I don't know the whole story about anything!

We arent talking about the ones you can just ignore, we are discussing the ones that are so bad that YOU cant ignore them, besides some of us it is harder to ignore them than others. read the posts to understand more.

glad to hear you are not trying to argue, me either.
Let me explain how I go about things.
I have neighbors that are next door in a very small house full of lot of people including an old guy that lives in a garage which is right by my bedroom window. He was having problems with some of the other tenants in his house and started listening to his TV all the time never turning it off and it was very loud, so loud that I could hear it in my garage on the other side of my house from his, while my garage door was closed.
So I moved my bed, got expensive noise reducing motel curtains, and since I cant wear ear plugs and cant listen to music any more I tried wearing headphones without listening to anything. I even when to ask him at 2 am twice to please turn it down. After not sleeping for over a week, I called the cops.
They have now given me their phone number to call them instead of the cops, and have except for once not had the noise on after 11pm or before 9am.
I did everything I could before contacting them and also before taking action and calling the cops.
I also have done the same thing with the ads, did everything I could try on my end before going to the message boards.
I have tried many freeware software sites and use the various software for things like ads and such so I would not be complaining about something that I could change before complaining because I am not that kind of person.
hope that explains things better. Sorry if I was short with you, I try to be a Christian in all that I do as That is the most important part of who I am.

No, not wanting to argue at all.

Just trying to get you to resolve the issue, rather than continuing to complain about something you can change.

I also have health issues, and I chose to have all the ads blocked on all the sites I visit.

But, I'll be done too.

I am emoticon about your condition and please understand that I did not mean to step on your toes , this was just a general statement I made to motivate those that don't have any serious medical problems like that. Their are some people(my husband included) that like to complain about every little thing. Have you ever seen a comedy called BECKER? It is about a doctor who loves to think negative he complains about everything. This is what was going through my mind, so please forgive me. On the plus side though maby my message and your response to me will do something about. Thank you for responding to me and making me aware. I did not have a broad picture of the whole scenario, and you have helped me with that.
Thank You and I will hold you in my prayers.

It is all well and good to say stay focused if you have no medical problems that make that hard to do. I have those medical problems. I have had severe head trauma and have pressure in my head that makes those ads especially hard for me. IF it is painful to see flashing ads for example, then the site is selecting a few that they don't care about, I ask you how kind is that? Should someone disabled that cant handle those ads be excluded?
It isnt all the ads that are disturbing and I dont mind the ones that are not disturbing. However, even a FREE site that is there to HELP people should have the consideration for the type of ads they put on their site.
It is becoming more and more of a problem in all free sites. Maybe that is the problem, no one cares the just accept it as the way it is. Maybe the people using the site shouldnt be so willing to accept everything that happens as the way it is then less things will be pushed down our throats with the attitude that you have to take this. If no one comes to a site even if it is free, it disappears. OR it changes its site to fit the people that come there.

The ads do help not only recoup investments but to make money, dont fool yourself into thinking otherwise. Free sites dont continue unless they make money, it isnt that kind of world.
Another thought to add, if you really want to help then help the advertisers that have the disturbing ads to know that they are bad ads, and then they can change them so people will respond the way they want. I have send out messages to advertisers to let them know their ads are disturbing and they have been grateful and some have even CHANGED their ads.

What do you guys want?
This sight is totally free! and as far as I"m concerned This is the best Site there is! From what I saw in the video Mr Chris Downie (Spark Guy and CEO of SparkPeople) put 5 million dollars of his own money into this site. I think the ads are helping him get his investment back. But for sure they are helping him keep this sight up and running. I'm more worried to think what would happen if there were no ads up there. So I welcome the ads, and I even wish I could buy something from one of them to try to help out a little. I just don't have the funds to do it right now. I mean it saies right there
SparkPeople advertisers help keep the site free! Which probually means that if we buy something from one of the ads then that advertiser will give back to spark people. So lets start using the ads sparkpeople and keep this site going forever. So that your children and your childrens childrens can use it one day if they need to. Or so it will just be there for anyone and everyone who wants to use for centuries down the line.
You guys who are being disturbed by the ads need to focus more. When I am working on sparkpeople I am totally focused because I have a mission so I don't care what the ads are doing. Even the new ones they got now that fly across to the middle of your screen and then stops there, I just click on it to close and then go on with my business, OH then there's those that if you go to a certain part of the screen it will role down, I just ignore it. Some times you can click on it to close and it will stay closed. Now I understand that it may be slowing things down a little but hey the site is there. You wouldent have that complaint if the site wasn't there would you. If you were on another sight you would probually be complaining about paying good money for crappy service. As a matter of fact a lot of people that use this sight comes from other sites, I'm one of them.
Anyway all I'm trying to say in a nut shell is #1 lets show the proper love and respect to Mr Chris Downie (Spark Guy and CEO of SparkPeople) because if it wasn't for him there would be no SparkPeople and #2 lets stay focused on our mission. When you are focused on your mission, NOTHING GETS IN YOUR WAY!
Much love and many blessings(espically weight loss blessings) to all.
Love, TRACY emoticon

I agree that they slow everything down, especially when the site is loading. I also agree that the site is a good site to have, but some of the ads are too bothersome, like the one from that headache remedy that has the lady tearing off her face, flashing ads, and a few others.

6/13/10 9:23 P

The ads bug me too, and they slow everything down.

However, I will say that if they keep SP free, I will put up with it. I couldn't afford to pay for the service, but the website is invaluable...

It says my popup blocker is currently on; and yet I have ads on the website all the time?
I also have a ad blocker that comes with my security software, so either they both are not working or the ads are not considered popup ads.

Does any of the ads on sparkspeople disturbing anyone? it is a bit disturbing to have the ads where people are tearing off their faces, no matter what they are advertising. And a bit ignoring to have to wait for moving ads to load just to sign on to sparkspeople. I have left game sites for that reason, too bad the ads have to be so ignoring and disturbing first thing in the morning when you are inputting data. emoticon
