What about roasted chicken? It is very simple and looks lovely right out of the oven; not too casual but still kid-friendly. You'll want a couple of them for 12 people. Roasted root vegetables (pop them in the oven on the shelf under (or over?) the birds). Green salad.

Not sure if you are limiting your poultry to just chicken, but what about turkey burgers? We add grated carrots and zucchini and miz in a packet of onion soup or beefy mushroom soup.
If you are going with chicken what about a skillet/crock pot lasagna? Add in lots of veggies and ricotta or cottage cheese for lower fat and calories.

Maybe a chicken pasta dish, served with a nice tossed green salad...?

Sorry, I meant to add this is a group of kids age 9+ and adults- so important for it to be kid-friendly too...

I'm trying to come up with some dinner ideas for a group of 12 people who have very different eating habits. I'm looking for nice- not too casual. I don't eat beef or pork, so I've settled on chicken because part of the group eats a lot of meat. However, they don't like Indian or Mexican food- so I'm looking for something more "traditional"- which really isn't the way I cook. But I also want it healthy and low fat---- ideas?!?! Ideas for sides and desserts also appreciated. Thank you!
