Due to Hurricane Sandy, I got a real taste of being a "virtual assistant" today.
And I don't like it.

I could never be home, having a "day off" due to lack of available transportation to get to a job that is far away (in commute time, not crow-flies miles) due to Hurricane Sandy, and be interrupted by phone seemingly every two minutes; with my apartment not set up to function as a "virtual office"/liason between two or more remote locations, with ongoing time-dependent travel and delivery coordinating disrupted by said hurricane. So one task (on a less efficient DSL system that kept shutting off), with questionable phone access ... 3-way calling and *69 can do just so much; and an antiquated thermal paper fax machine which does not seem to get faxes to their destination (again, said hurricane) ..

Over a period of seven hours, I could not sit down to one actual "meal" at one time, for most of the day.

Boredom and stress ... and snacks at hand (tried to keep the nutrition relevant, as that is my program) ...

I am actually slightly less bored at the office even though it's tiny and I'm alone half of the time.

Don't beat yourself up over one day! The average person in the US lives 78.2 years... or 28,543 days. This is only 1 day, or .0035%.

I have the same problem with eating when I'm bored. What I find helps is getting out and going for a walk. If you have the means, it might help to buy a treadmill and put it in front of the TV so there are no excuses.

Spark Cheers,

Don't beat yourself up because you ate a little too much today. Boredom can make us all mindless nibblers. As Coach Nancy noted, you've recognized that boredom causes you to eat. What to do ? Do something that keeps your mind off of food. Try taking a walk. The fresh air will do you some good. If you don't want to take a walk, what do you do for hobbies ? Do you knit ? sew ? paint ? play a musical instrument ? collect stamps ? If you can keep your fingers and your brain busy, you won't think about food. Read a book or you could even do a DVD workout.

These are things to keep you occupied so you won't think about food. If you're bored, it really means you need something to keep you busy.

Read a book, do a craft, clean your house, take a walk... there are plenty of things to do!

With boredom, you obviously have some spare time on your hands. You could find that getting onto SP and reading the message boards and/or the articles in the Healthy Lifestyle section are great ways to forget about food and get engrossed in the articles. I know that for me, I often forgot about my meals until quite a time past normal meal times. If you don't want to do that there are hobbies you may like to develop as well as what Coach Nancy has suggested.

Recognition is half the battle. Now you have to come up with a plan that works for you as to what you can do the next time you find yourself bored. It could be that going for a walk, posting on the message boards, calling a friend, reading a book, whatever you can do that will help distract your from turning to food. It may take some practice since many of us have lived a lifetime forming not so healthy habits.

Hang in there!

Coach Nancy
