i am currently making two meals i eat the same thing the family does just a healthier version as bad as it sounds i am doing what one would with a dog i am slowly sneaking veggies and healthy options into their diet until we are full blown healthy lol

I have a meat and potatoes guy at home myself, and he could eat a horse and not gain a pound, so needless to say meal planning can be challenging. But, I am also not a believer that "healthy eating" means having to eat salads and stuff all the time. One thing I do is reserve some extra calories so I can eat a bigger dinner (usually anywhere from 500-700 calories). It works out fine because I'm not a big breakfast eater anyway so I don't spend a lot of calories on that. Another key is to find recipes that they will like, but are still healthy enough for you. is great for this.

If they have some favorite things they like to eat, maybe let us know and we can help you find healthier alternatives. Another thing is I dish out my meal first, with the correct portion sizes, along with putting my leftovers for my lunch in a container. After my stuff is taken out, he can eat as much of the rest as he wants... I usually cook at least 4 portions for the 2 of us. Along the same idea, if I'm making whole pieces of meat, like pork chops or chicken breasts, I pick a smaller one to make for myself, and a bigger one for him. Sometimes I have to take mine out sooner so it doesn't overcook but it works out well.

Also, here's some recipes I've made that have really pleased my guy but still were healthy enough for me.

A standby for me: SkinnyTaste's garlic mashed potatoes. I use 2% greek yogurt instead of the sour cream... it ups the protein a bit, but doesn't really affect the calories and they still taste great:

Pork Chops alla Pizzaola. 380 calories for a 5oz chop with sauce, serve with a side of roasted broccoli, sauteed zucchini, or a salad

Pork Tenderloin usually goes over very well, here's a couple different ideas, I often will serve with the mashed potatoes above and again, roasted broccoli (BF's favorite) or whatever seasonal vegetable, roasted.
-Soy Dijon Pork Tenderloin - 6oz serving (which is a lot of meat for tenderloin, 4oz is usually plenty while in weight loss mode) is 436 calories

-Sweet and Spicy Pork Tenderloin - 6oz serving is 427 calories

Pepper Steak - just serve with rice, calories are listed in the recipe. Also I used sherry instead of rice wine since I couldn't find it in the store.

Chicken Enchilada Spaghetti - I added corn to mine. 4 big servings (just divided the end result up by 4) - 500 cal per serving

Bacon Topped Turkey Meatloaf - this was a HUGE hit. I made it one big loaf and just increased the cooking time since I don't have a mini loaf pan. Another one to serve w/ the mashed potatoes.

Baked Pesto Chicken - BF's all time favorite, and SO easy. I used breadcrumbs instead of the almond flour. Also, you could cut the chicken breasts in half lengthwise to make them thinner and that cuts the calories way down. A 7oz piece of meat w/ everything is 483 calores, but like I said, can be cut almost in half by cutting the chicken in half.

Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy - another one to have w/ mashed potatoes! Also the trick of mixing half ground turkey with half ground beef is one that can be applied to a lot of recipes. Ground turkey by itself is pretty blah, but mixed with ground beef it ends up being great.

it will probably take your family some time to get used to the changes. do they not like the food or are they just aren't used to it? maybe slowly changing things would help? For example-if you are buying whole milk, maybe first switch to 2% and when your family gets used to that try something lower?

i am picky, so i don't force my kids to eat things they don't like. i would rather not eat than eat any type of bean. I try to get them to at least try things. sometimes they are suprised by what they like.

i give my kids the option of making themselves something like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fruit if they don't like what i made. there is usually a healthy option my kids can get for themselves. but i don't let them eat a bunch of junk food if they didn't want the dinner i made.

different things work for different familes.

I make dinner if you eat fine if you don't fine, but the kitchen is closed to any option other than leftovers from a previous night if there are any.

The only concession I make is with fish , unless it is one they like. 3 of mine do not like salmon so I make cod for them.

I am restocking the pantry with healthy things so once the junk snacks are gone that's it. Mine are in Junior high and High school, they get junk there and the man of the house can cheat outside the home while at work. This is a lifestyle change not a diet. I tell my boys "This is for real for our health so we can live to pay you back in spades once you have your own homes. Then we can go there, make a mess , eat your food, sit on our butts and watch your tv while you clean up."

My family is not interested in improving the menu choices around here. Any suggestions or strategies for a meat and potato family to get involved with healthy choices?
