I'm one of those rare people who actually LOST weight in college. Mostly because I was taking 18-19 credits a semester and working 30+ hours a week, I didn't have TIME to eat. But once I was out of college I blew up like a balloon to 275. But the point is, you can take the weight off, but that won't necessarily make you feel better. I agree with the therapy thing. Loving yourself is a HUGE step, and can help your weight loss efforts. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement and compliments! I have started to walk to work every day instead of taking the bus. It adds 30 minutes to my fitness tracker. Also in the past eight days I have lost 3 pounds. Seeing improvement has motivated me to keep going. emoticon
I know I am ready to do this.

Like you I've lost and regained weight. In 2009 I too was over 200 pounds and successfully lost 70 pounds over a 15 month period. Then I started a new job followed by a huge emotional crisis turning 50, and before I knew it I had regained 50 pounds. It happens to many people for many different reasons; what is different for you is that you here on Sparkpeople rolling up your sleeves and getting ready to do something about it.

It's great that you understand the value of the nutritional tracker. For fitness I would try to find ways to make it fun and social if you are finding it hard to get motivated. I have found that walking with a friend and being able to read with certain cardio activities go a long way towards helping my motivation. Honestly in the beginning with some strength exercises and weights I had to look at it like brushing my teeth. Noone really *enjoys* brushing their teeth (do they?!), but most people do it anyways. Now that I've been doing it for a while and seeing some results, it's a bit easier to stay motivated.

Twice in my life, I've weighed over 200+ pounds. A few years ago, I made a decision that that wasn't going to happen a third time.

You can't beat yourself up beat you gained, lost and regained the weight. That's something that has happened to every single member of Spark People at one time or another. I spent years yo yo dieting. but, a person does get to a point in their life when they decide the do want to make a change. You can't change the past. But, you can influence and change the future. You're young, you have your entire life ahead of you. Don't beat yourself up because you've gained weight. You're a normal human being.

What to do ? Start with some simple changes you can stick with. Don't look at weight loss or good health with an all or nothing mentality. If the only healthy thing you were to do for yourself was to drink 8 glasses of water today, that's still a step in the right direction. One small change is all it take to change everything.

Also, when you set your goals, those goals should be achievable as well as practical. You didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight. There are no fast ways to take the weight off. I wish there were. Weight loss is a slow steady process that takes time. What I've learned from my own years of yo yo dieting is that the faster a person takes off the weight, the faster it packs back on. Taking the weight off slowly will help keep it off.

Remember, this isn't a diet. it's a life style change. the changes you make to your health today, you keep for the rest of your life. not the amount of time it takes to lose the weight.

That's why it's important to start with a few simple changes. don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. some simple changes would be to eat a couple extra servings of fresh fruit and veggies each day, drink more water, take a daily walk, try to cut back on highly processed foods, etc...

You don't have to be perfect to be healthy. Start with some simple changes first. With time, you keep adding changes. Because one small change will lead to another and another and another. before you know it, all those small changes add up into one huge accomplishment.

Thank you for creating your SparkPage AND putting your photo on! What I saw is a very attractive young woman - one who IS actually beautiful!!!!

Your legs don't look as bad as you paint them - I don't actually LIKE seeing gaps in the thighs.

Where it comes to the Fitness Tracker, I use mine BUT I don't take any notice of calories burned. I only use it for SparkPoints. I have lost a considerable amount of weight but not because of exercise. I acknowledge that exercise IS an integral part of this healthy lifestyle journey, but in my case the lack of it is because of skeletal issues. I DO do some exercise tho' - it is basically just walking - in my own home..... putting my groceries and laundry away one at a time. (O.K. - I LOVE doing laundry - LOL!) Sometimes I manage a 30 minute walk - sometimes it might be 15 minutes or even less if I am in quite a bit of pain. The thing is, these walks not only don't seem like exercise, but they don't seem like work, either - to me that is win/win - LOL! I also sometimes walk around the house when I am talking on the phone. Because my mind is distracted, I can get some walks in doing this, too :-) I USED to go to a Pilates Class - 1hr per week. This was really good because altho' it focuses on the deep abdominal and back muscles, it also covers all the other muscles in the body too. By doing this it can give the appearance of having lost weight (even if you haven't) because it is toning you muscles. It encourages you to breathe properly and also to hold yourself properly ... it improves your overall posture. THOSE are pretty positive things as far as I am concerned. I did this weekly for a few years, but unfortunately haven't been since June last year when my hubby had another heart attack. That was the start of 7 hospital admissions for various serious health issues up until Xmas, and straight after that my Stepfather took over from where hubby left off. THEN my mother go in the act, then hubby again. So the upshot is, I didn't have the time or energy because my time was understandably taken up. It is still ongoing to this day :-( BUT through all of that, I have still maintained.

Sometimes a little Therapy can help you improve your self-esteem and replace negativity with a positive outlook and attitude. Your Dr will be able to refer you to someone, or you could access someone via a Church or Community Group. You don't have to be members to do so, and often those come free or very low cost.

I'm glad that you realize that you aren't alone - here you are NEVER alone!!!!

It actually took me three years to lose the weight that I did in high school. When I started college is when everything changed. I think the stress and change in lifestyle took its toll. The freshman 15 turned into the freshman 30 and then the sophomore 20 wanted to join in.

The Nutrition Tracker is one of the main reasons I joined SP. I felt that if I could see what I was putting into my body it would be easier to make changes. The thing that I am struggling with is the Fitness Tracker. I have little motivation to get up and actually work out and every time I start I end up doing very little.

I really don't like what I see. I look in the mirror and I see all the negative things. Like the rolls of fat or the fact that my thighs rub together. I think I need to work on what's inside myself before I work on the outside. Basically, getting rid of my negative outlook.

Thanks for the support :) I am looking forward to being able to share my struggle and triumphs with others. It's nice knowing that I am not alone.

Hi - The good thing is that you are here to do something about it! Forget about the past - today is a new day - tomorrow is the future! THAT is what you should be looking to - not the past.

I am wondering if when you lost weight previously you did it using 'a diet' and/or changing things very quickly??? IF so, this could explain why you have regained. Diets don't work - they don't actually teach you the HEALTHY way to go on this journey of a lifetime. Start now using the baby steps method. Change only one or two things to start with and ONLY when your mind/body has gotten used to the changes, add something else to the mix. It might be something as simple as reducing soda/juice and increasing your water consumption. It might also be going for a 10 minute walk a day.

I suggest that you use the Nutrition Tracker - I weigh all of my food for increased accuracy and enter it all in there. This has allowed me to stay focused and to also tweak my intake as and when necessary to ensure that I stay on track, within the calorie range and also to ensure that I have a good healthy mix of carbs/fats/protein.

You mention that you don't feel beautiful any more! Well, true beauty isn't a reflection in the mirror - it comes from within. It comes from our personality ... our spirit, and it will shine through. You don't like what you see? Sometimes that can be interpreted as you don't like YOU! Hopefully that is NOT what you are saying??? We all need/deserve to LOVE ourselves because that is the first step to our overall happiness.

You will find that if you are active your SparkTeams message boards, or the others in the community section, you will get a load more support from the members of SP. You will make tons of friends, too :-) You will also find that if you create a SparkPage and have it open so that members can drop by, you will get tons more support because they will be able to leave encouraging little messages, AND the occasional goodie, and they are always good to receive - LOL!

I weight 220 pounds in high school and was able to drop down to 150 by the end of my senior year. Now two years later I find myself at that 200 pound mark again. I can't believe I let myself go and gained all the weight back that I lost. I don't feel beautiful anymore and I don't like what I see.
