Poll: Do You Like to Be Active on Vacation?

By , SparkPeople Blogger
It's been a while since I've taken a true vacation (I've been taking more staycations -- staying home while taking vacation time), but when I do go on vacation (or even when I take a staycation), I like to stay active. I do spend some time relaxing as well, but I do my best to make sure that I incorporate some form of exercise/activity in my day, which helps me stay on track with my health goals.

When vacationing, I like to do as much walking as I can, so I try to select places to stay that are within walking distance to things that I would like to do or see. That helps to keep me active and saves money by not spending it on gas for the car. If I go to a place that has a lot of outdoor type activities to do, I try to hike and bike too. If I stay at a hotel that has a pool or gym, I also like to take advantage of those as well. One time many years ago, I stayed at a resort in Mexico and participated in a water aerobics class that they offered -- talk about a fun, active and relaxing time!

If I take a staycation, I like to do a lot of those types of activities as well. It helps me get out and see more of the surroundings in my area that I may have missed before. There are numerous hiking and biking trails around me that I have yet to try out and what better time to do so than during a staycation! This year when I take some time off, I'll be including my dogs in my vacation and/or staycations too, so that will make staying active more fun and exciting for all of us.

I took a bike tour of Tuscany in May and it was wonderful. The hills were challenging (but I like hills) but you could ride at your own pace, stop and take pictures along the way or grab the sag vehicle if you wanted. No one did since we only averaged about 30 miles a day. Our afternoons were pretty relaxing after the ride for the day and it was perfect. I liked being active and totally shutting off my mind and the best way to experience Tuscany (I believe) is on a bike. You aren't just there...you're "in" the country!

My profile pic is me on the beach at the sea towards the end of the week. So worth all of the hills to get to this point! Report
Everything in moderation. I don't go exercise crazy when on holiday. We make sure to get plenty of time in a beach chair and same amount hiking, swimming, biking, kayaking, etc.

I do find being active & exercising on holiday motivating. It doesn't take long for the body to get into a routine. If we are up every morning running before breakfast on holiday, I know it will roll over into our daily routine at home. Report
My husband and I have been planning our vacations around cycling day trips for years! We will ride bikes in the morning (when it is cooler and less busy) -- ususally sharing a breakfast picnic. That time together is very important to us -- and whatever we have planned for the rest of the day is planned around our morning bike ride. Report
I love being active. I like going places where I can get around mostly by walking, but I usually will start my morning with a run. I've gone kayaking on vacations, rented a bicycle and gone on long bike rides. I just find a way to incorporate activity and exercise in a way that it's fun and still feels relaxing. Report
We try to do a mix of activity and relaxation. Relaxation always feels better when you're active FIRST. Report
I like to be active, but when I do a trip it's usually a historical site or something that involves a lot of walking. I may not bust my buns at the gym, but I may lace up my tennis shoes and walk many miles over the course of the day. Report
I like to be active but not over the top and exhausted! Report
I enjoy a combination of being active and enjoying some down time too!

I've been planning our vacations around my Dreamboard/Vision collage, to be active and fulfill a dream. It's working out great so far. On one vacation we swam with the dolphin and played hard all day at a water park, last fall we went to the mountains and climbed Chimney Rock, and this fall we'll stay at the beach and bike around the island to see it in full and enjoy the wildlife, and take in eco tours as well. In the end, we can relax and enjoy the awesome sunset!

I'm living my Dreamboard/Vision Collage, and staying active too! Report
